To the seventh circle of hell with blink tanking. My most hated memories of FFXI involved stupid players who were either maining NIN, or (more often than not), subbing it with another job, in parties over-relying on Utsusemi thinking that it made themselves invincible to anything in the game (which it didn't - there were plenty of enemies in the game who used attacks that ate through shadows wholesale), getting themselves killed as a result, and then blaming the healer, ala myself (I was WHM), for it.
Hence, it's forever poisoned my attitude towards the Job (like stupid Edward in FFIV did towards BRD). Blink tanking has no place here.
Even after Yoshi flat out said it's purely DPS?
Pretty sure it was confirmed today as a dd(or dps, whatever you wanna call it) class today, that was the feel I got from the reveal at least.
and new tank and heal class is coming though, just not at 2.4.

Well, if they have a blink and they can either sub class into glad or marauder... You "could" dedicate one of your moves to the embity attack and constantly spam that.
Granted you'd have terrible threat and most likely no provoke...
I personally hated NIN tanking in 11 and levelled NIN to 37 for the dual world bonus and that's it.
Confirmed DPS, close thread and move on.

Ninja in FFXI was literally the least fun I have ever had playing a video game in my entire life.
It was the purest of manifestation of everything that was wrong with this game, and every time I boot up FFXIV, I light a little candle in my head in thanks to it having developers that are not horrible people.
For the love of everything pure and holy in this God forsaken world...NO!
Granted having some kind of semblance of "realism" or "logic" in a fantasy game is taboo, but why in the twelve hells would you want a class based on a profession that epitomizes stealth, sneaking, stillness and quick entry and exits to be the "HAI GUIZE! LOK AT MEH!"... seriously.
As for the Samurai as a tank, just like most here, I would gladly accept that over a Ninja or Thief or Rogue or hell any class that uses any "sneak" related skills as a tank.
So happy it's pure DPS!
Hope SAM would be next Tank, and Gunsomething healer, nice!

Tanks and healers are coming for the extension (which is said to come after Coil3, so instead of 2.5 or 2.6, expect 7/10 month from now).
And tbh, there are like at least 2 jobs which would make so much more sense as tanks... I mean, have you ever heard about Templars ? Even SAM would be better tanks than NIN...
That said, we got no words on the gunner class. Still hoping for healer, chemist job :p
Oh and btw, healers are now as scarce as tanks. Not sure if it's because we have less healers or more tanks though. Could be both. But honnestly, if you want to work on something, fix people's attitude about "URGH, WANNA DO BIG NUMBAHZ". That's mainly why SMNs aren't that common, even though they are at least on par with other dps... everyone seems to play DRG or BLM nowadays >.>

Templar => magic buffed tank, high magic resist
evasion tank in a game not designed for it (aka FFxiv, insta death-or-6k attack only) ? Sure... You'll have a tank useless for anything above... Story mode maybe ?
And good luck to beat titan HM for your relic without i110. No way you'll have the HP to survive before that.

Not really, but I do believe that if they are ever going to add another tank, evasive-based mechanics is the route to go. NIN would have been perfect for it, but I'm fine with it being only DPS.

So making Ninja my melee main.
To be honest, Team Tanaka's catering to the bandwagoners effectively ruined Ninja as a DPS job, other jobs by extension due to a playerbase requiring /NIN, and FFXI overall by creating enemies with horrible AoE moves intended to strip shadows.
I hope team Yoshi have thought the concept of Ninja as a DPS through and have abilities set up that allow the job to execute its designated role. If shadow abilities must be present, they should temporarily increase the player's attack potency rather than take damage (a concept that has been exploited by all of us in XI and led to needless escalation of monsters' power in the long run). I'd personally like to see enfeebling Ninjutsu (Jubaku, Hojo, etc.), though that certainly would require a new class.
As for Samurai, I'd see it a perfect tank if it becomes the 2nd Lancer job. An enmity-building ability (similar to Defiance & Shield Oath) would not be too difficult to think up and a few Samurai-specific thrusts that form combos with each other isn't beyond the realm of possibility.
I doubt that they'll add Samurai as the Job for an existing class, except MAYBE off of Gladiator. If the addition of Ninja is any indication, we might have the addition of new classes coming with each new job in the short term. Perhaps in the long term, these classes will then sort of get mixed and matched for new Jobs.
I still don't quite understand the overblown hate towards NIN in FFXI. At the very least, it's one of the extremely rare cases of player creativity in MMORPG history. Mobs in FFXI always hit hard (as you did often group up to fight mobs 6-10 levels higher... so duh?), enough so to 1-2 shot non tanks, which essentially makes that argument flatline. The actual playstyle of the job (blink tanking) certainly wasn't for everyone, and will obviously create some bad memories for some people because of the delicacy, but it's not exactly the equivalent of the black plague to the game. Heck, you could still DD as NIN in XI, it just wasn't exactly the most cost efficient method. NIN/BLM damage was extremely good during certain parts of the game, high enough that you could potentially tank simply spamming spells based on the elemental wheel. Mind you, this was during the first several years of FFXI. Was it the best? Nope, but it was pretty funny to do something different.
Having said that though, I don't really care if it's only a DPS role here. That's perfectly fine. FFXIV is not FFXI, afterall. A SAM tank would be interesting, but oh gaud... it'll be FFXIV's equivalent of the Death Knight in WoW for a while.

Ninja in FFXI was supposed to be a dps, people just used it as a tank, I am pretty sure Ninja here will be dps.
Why make more DPS when tank is lacking.
People aren't lacking tanks, its that people don't wanna tank because Elites start talking crap about how well they do, nobody wants to have that weight on their shoulders and that's why we see Less tanks and Less healers cause nobody learns how to keep their mouth closed and play the damn game instead of putting someone down to is learning their job.
Plus they said more jobs are being made for expansion.
Yoshi P had said before that if they were ever to release something similar to a ninja class, that it would not be a tank role. As much as I'd love a sudden wave of players playing a new tank and making my queues faster, I however wouldn't want that new tank class to be ninja anyway. Even the FFXI Ninja was made a tank by the playerbase, against SE's plans.
XIV is much stricter in terms of what we can equip as "subjob" abilities, so I think that hopefully this kind of community-induced derailing will be prevented this time.
To be honest, I was sorta hoping Ninja would be some cool Parry Tank. But, I'm just happy the class I've wanted to play all along is finally coming. So its neither here nor there. It's gonna suck for DF ques though. I've been spoiled by WAR ques :(
It's a poor assumption to assume that if NIN was going to be a tank they would do "blink tanking" and just unecessary to always bring this up as the reason why Ninja tanking won't work. While they have alrdy said that NIN is going to be a DD, it could of worked as a tank had they thought more into the concept of it. An evasive tank, building up it's ability to mitigate damage through evasion and parrying, and using those charges gained up to use other abilities. Honestly it is a bit tiresome how whenever the concept of NIN tank is mentioned people just focus on the XI version and assume that XIV would draw everything from XI, because if that was the case, then the class/jobs we have now would play like their XI counterparts but do they don't. Does Monk play as a combo master like in XIV it doesn't.
