Wryvern done right

I know many players have been begging for dragoons to get a pet wryvern like they had in FFXI. I'm not one of those people, I don't want dragoon hobbled due to a wyvern or shackled to a wyvern.

Since Yoshi's-P mentioned the possible addition of wyvern for dragoons I have been concerned. The simplest solution to a problem is the most elegant and probably never the one used to address any issue in this game.

So how would I add a wyvern, simply as an alternate companion. No need to nerf dragoon. What it would open the door to is additional job specific companions down the road such as bears for warriors, lions for paladins and so forth.

Just don't make it another useless minion.

I really hope it has some gameplay function. Even the minions are sort of pointless now because so many of them have little to no unique functions.

Also because I need to press a button to bring it up means that my minion is almost never in use anyway.
Look around in town. It's clear that majority of the players just don't care about the pets anymore because they're just nowhere to be seen post-launch.

If he gets a companion that can level up, why can't my unicorn/lion/magitek? --->
If his chocobo can breed with other chocobos, and my wyvern can level up the same way, why can't my wyvern breed? --->
If his wyvern can level up and breed, why can't my unicorn/lion/magitek? --->
Eventually, my point leads to equality for racing, leveling, and breeding of all mounts after much, much, MUCH forum "discussion". That's a lot of time and resources that may or may not be in the works.

I +1'd the OP, because it's a good idea, but I foresee so many, "why don't I get candy, too?!?!" threads.

Just add it to the singular LB as a visually pleasing spirit of the dragoon (not as a silly little mini dragon)

1. Lore is safe - Dragon killers are not fostering a Wyvren
2. QQs get a dragon in some form
3. ???
4. Complain about new thing

The only concern I have with making the Wyvern a companion, is that it would link the Wyvern to the party list. Meaning that if you had 8 people in your party, you could not pull out your Wyvern. Additionally it means that you can't use your Wyvern in Dungeons. Part of the whole point of having a Wyvern on a Dragoon is that the people asking for it want to be able to use them in their dungeons. Or at least I would assume so anyways.

With The Stone Vigil (Hard) coming up, I wouldn't hold my breath.

People who want a Wyvern in any real capacity in XIV just need to get over the fact that XIV is a different game and that's not what the developers are going to do. At best I'd hope for a Wyvern Barding.

That's the problem as Yoshi said if they make it so you can use a wyvern without the limitations imposed on a companion then they have to nerf dragoon to balance out the game.

I'd rather have a wyvern as a companion than a big yellow chicken. I'd rather not have a wyvern if they weaken dragoon as a result.

Hope the wyvern comes in the form of a class specific mount.

Just put wyvern as the new lvl 55 job skill. Have it be a long cooldown summon (5 mins) and have it stick around until it dies. While it's up and around, it'll attack whatever the dragoon's attacking..for 1 damage (it's a baby). Attach a trait called soul link to the drg and wyvern and whenever the dragoon gets damaged, the wyvern takes damage instead. The wyvern is not as resilient enough as the fairies or egis but is able to take half of the dragoon's hp in damage.

There, no increase in drg attack power. Increase in survivability instead. Can also be lore friendly (drg stole a wyvern egg and is now using it as a hostage and a meat shield).

problem with your idea Gardes is that we aren't likely to get the level cap increased until Version 3.0. We only just got Version 2.28. We still have to go through versions 2.3 to 2.99 yet before they even consider releasing version 3.0. That could be over a year now before that happens.

I really don't get all this want for a wyvern for Dragoon. XI was the only Final Fantasy that did this and the lore is that the Dragoon drew their power from it, with the quest explaining that it was a dangerous exchange that could potentially corrupt the Dragoon. In XIV the Dragoon draws their power from Nidhogg's eye, plucked from the wyrm's head by the first Dragoon. Dragoons use Nidhogg's own power to hunt and kill dragons. They don't need a wyvern because they got the best thing after the next five best things, the power of a wyrm! And Dragoons normally server Ishgard, who religiously hunt dragons in all shapes and forms. Religiously. A wyvern as a Job feature makes no sense. Now, a wyvern mount or minion, that I can get behind.

Doesn't necessarily go upto 2.99 before 3.0. 3.0 could as easily come after 2.5 which is probably going to be last part of CT finishing the coil/CT story.

But I like minions..

I think a wyvern would need to be treated as a pet, and DRG would need to be nerfed to make up for it. If it were a companion, they'd be expected to update SMN, SCH, and ACN so that they can also strengthen their pets as companions.

Hopefully DRGs just get their own unique mount, a wyvern. I think each job should eventually get a class-specific mount.

HP same 70% of Dragoons.
Has it's own system.
Gains the same benefit when the Dragoon actives Life-surge, Blood for Blood, Bloodbath, and Inner Release.

Has 3 stances and 4 abilities per stance 4th is a shared. Soul Surge incapacitates the wyvern pet to give a bonus to your Jump ability. Yes taking pleasure on beating your own pet grants you benefits. Good thing there's no laws against pet abuse in Eorzea.

Melee stance: Auto-Attack Damage 30 potency. Every 5 auto-attacks it uses one of the following abilities.
Tail whip 120 potency
Firefang 100 potency: Additional effect: Damage over time. Potency 20 seconds duration 12 seconds. (wyvern latches itself on to the enemy during this ability)
Levinshower: Breath Lightning on enemies in a frontal cone. Potency 105.
Soul Surge: Bonus: Critical Landing. Your Jump is a guaranteed crit.

Caster Stance: Casts its abilities doesn't auto-attack. Will tend to stay mid-range and auto adjust itself after casting an ability to avoid cleaves.
Frost Breath: Single Target 120 potency 2 second cast
Fireball: Target AoE 100 potency 3 second cast
Bubonic Cloud: Create a pulsating orb of Lightning on a target. Potency 50 duration 10 seconds.
Soul Surge: Bonus: Ring of Frost. Delivers a jumping frost-based attack with a potency of 170 to all nearby enemies. Additional affect: leaves a sheet of ice that deals damage and gives slow 20% to enemies.

Healer/Support Stance. Casts it's healing abilities. Attaches itself to someone like a minion would for benefits.
Healing Breath: Frontal Cone: 150 potency. 5 second cast.
Fetch: Can recover bodies outside of the battlefield. Takes 20 seconds. 2 minute cooldown. (Can bring people in that don't make it in time for a fight and are locked out. Can also be used to return dead bodies to the battle field. Works on fights like Titan. Does not work on fights like Leviathan.)
Bravery: Increases someone determination.
Soul Surge: Bonus: High Jump. When you jump you take up to the sky for 3 seconds before landing. Helps avoid abilities like landslide, cyclops tonze swing, etc. More dps less moving.

I'd hate it if I was forced to use a pet as my DRG. There's a reason I don't play Summoner or Scholar.

Very much doubt it'll be a pet similar to the SMN/SCH one tbh.

And if its a skill, it'll be either shit or OP for the first few days and then nerfed into the ground via long ass cd/reduced dmg or w/e.

All I want tbh is a kick-ass dragon mount :(

Well when hybrid/support classes start making their way onto the scene, bosses will have to be made more difficult to compensate, a wyvern would be a good way to buff drg.

Please no wyvern... it hurt DRG in FFXI way too much.

Wyvern as a DRG limit break animation should be good enough

That is not how versioning works. Versions are broken down into three sections (or more if needed). First number is usually based off the expansion (or core change). So 1.0 was the first game, 2.0 is the rewrite, 3.0 will be the expansion.
Then next number (.1,.2,.3 etc) usually denotes a major change. IE. adding more dungeon content/major gameplay changes. The next number would be not so major (not quite minor) changes. This could be things including bug fixes, or content that doesn't change things in a major way. If they need to make even smaller types of changes they could tack on another number. Just because 3.0 will be the expansion, doesn't mean we have to wait. All it means is when the do a core change (ie. expansion or system re-write) they will advance the major number.

I think just a minion that you can get during a lv50 DRG quest would be fine

The only real reason it hurt DRG in FFXI was because call wyvern was originally DRG's 2hr, and DRG's damage dropped massively without it, once they added the 20 min cooldown the Wyvern was extremely useful especially solo.

I personally would prefer is we don't get a Wyvern for two reasons, one is that it breaks the lore, the Dragoons are knights of Ishgard fighting a war with the dragons, dragons are Ishgard's sworn enemy. Second FFXI was the only FF that DRG gets a pet Wyvern, I would prefer they to base the job off the classic FF games, like they have done. I would however be content with them adding a dragon to a DRG specific LB, the description could be something like "Limit Break, DRG Draw forth the full power of Nidhogg's Eye" because that is based on current lore.

Or you know, maybe a summon-able Wyvern as a second Lancer job.

No need to to change DRG at all.

This makes sense. They said they want to add additional jobs to each class. Maybe a tanking pet class for lancer will shut people up.

I play on PS4 and after leveling ACN to 15 for WHM, I'd hate to have to deal with a pet hotbar on my main class.

The beauty of my proposed system is you aren't altering DRG at all. You aren't diminishing it or buffing it, you aren't altering its role in light parties or full parties, you aren't messing with dungeons, trials, or coil or CT. You are simply re- skinning the companion system to appease those who missed their XI wyvern.

You aren't messing up the lore because as a dragoon I'd fight any dragon/wyvern the poses a threat, but I am not so cold as to kill defenseless unborn.

It comes down to when I am doing fates, daily quests, treasure maps and exploring, instead of a chocobo I could have the wyvern companion who I discovered as an egg and instead of killing it before it was even hatched I decided I'd let is live and keep it with me and hopefully teach it so it poses no threat to others.

It was only after reading an interview with Yoshi-P and he mentioned wyvern and dragoon that I became concerned.

How to train your wyvern?
Might aswell call your pet wyvern clawless or breathless as it'll do 1 damage and be a pain in the ass for non smn/ sch drgn users.

Just add a new job! Wyverian : D Someone out there may just love dragonkind and train a wyvern. They can make it lore friendly by making the guy who gives you the job a enemy of ishgard, traitor or just some dragon lovin hippy. This way Dragoon can be pure DD job and the "wyverian" job be a support or new pet tanker job? This would make a interesting take on tanking.

I'll rather my retainer be my companion... Just saying.

Also I think our companions should get emotes too... I been thinking that since I first got the unicorn for white mage.

why do people act like wyverns/dragons were not evil in ff11. people keep throwing this idea around and it's blatantly wrong. and anyone saying wyvern hurt the drg is just butthurt that drk was pulling big numbers. drg totally didnt have a trait called dragon killer in ff11 right? RIGHT? while drk's were sitting on thier ass in jeuno you coulda been out there in the world solong and leveling up. that said the most amicable solution is to make another alternate job for lancer. drg in ff11 was sorta supposed to be like a falconer with a wyvern instead of a falcon. they even had a lance called peregrine lance.
