Suggestion: Long hair for female characters

Hello, can you please tell the development team that i would love to see a very long hair feature available for female characters , just like Tifa from Final Fantasy 7

They've already said a few times that they can't add any really long hairstyles without running into major clipping problems.

Games have two choices in this regard

A: Stay a mile away from long hair/capes at all times.
B: Implement long hair/capes with the best simulations their engines can handle and deal with an endless deluge of "Why does my hair clip!!1?" and "OMG, newb devs, fix your game!" posts.

There's a hidden C: option which is more or less 'implement hair/capes, but limit animation to avoid collision and clipping' but it just leads to option B's problems.

If they're going to add long hairstyles they really should have as little clipping as possible...
Presently, the majority of the hairstyles have really bad clipping. It bothers me a lot.
It's not just the hairstyles that have clipping issues. It's gear as well, the worst offenders being cowls and robes. = +;

I realize it's not the end of the world but it really looks sloppy and I expect a lot more from SE.

Another clipping issue I keep seeing is my character's feet clipping through the floor when in certain dungeons... = =;

i dont mind clipping issues, i just want a very long hair :D

You're in the minority, sadly.
The female Roegadyn's hair options are as long as they are willing to go, and it smashes through the backs of those ladies constantly.

I would actually prefer more updo's and feathered options for girls over straight length.

More long styles in general, preferably unisex and for all races. Some of us like long hair on guys, and male Miqo'te only have the one long-ish style from the last patch, which would look good if they hadn't programmed it so that the bangs rest UNDER any face-mounted headgear...So if you're wearing, say, spectacles, the hair is mashed between the glass and your eye. It would actually look less stupid if it DID just clip right through the item.

i dont think its too hard, 2 million subscribers per month = alot of money = hire more members = programs long hair and fix its issues = next expansion = im not on a hurry as long as its gonna be implemented :P

I think it's the general stand point of both sides to not bother to. Players don't want it due to clipping. Dev's don't want it because of clipping. Dev's don't want to put the time in for adding hair physics with the character models to prevent clipping, which btw would affect performance as the machine would have to detect and figure those physics.

Hence, your idea of just hiring people doesn't really work out. =P

Also lets face it. If Square-Enix released Sephiroth hair style tomorrow we would see a lot of people with it regardless of clipping.

If Disney still has clipping problems with long hair in their multi-million dollar movies, I don't think SE is going to fare much better in a video game with polycounts in the low hundreds.

Considering the number of people complaining about the tiniest of cosmetic issues (bottoms and clipping being two of note) I don't think they're going to be in any hurry to add longer hairstyles. To be frank, I rather miss the dynamic hair of 1.0 which flowed a lot more realistically and probably could've worked with longer styles. Still, they've optimised things and that inevitably means removing some of the niceties. It's a sad trade-off but one I'm gladly accepting for the positive changes overall.

Cause having long hair is like something I really been hoping for

Because not everyone has a computer to run a game with that kind of physics. I don't even talk about the Ps3 that already has trouble to run the game.

To be fair, I've played a lot of MMO's and haven't found a single one devoid of clipping issues yet. Everything from World of Warcraft to DC Universe Online has its fair share of them simply because you can't have a catch-all solution which has the fine control needed to cover all circumstances.

Add me to the group who'd take long hairstyles with clipping than none at all.

If someone is bothered with clipping he's free to pick any other armor that doesn't clip. Glamour is there for a reason. Or you know, wear a different hairstyle he/she is content with.

Clipping problems are the headache of CG artists everywhere, and hair is where it hurts the most. It can possibly be avoided by things like ponytails, braids, or feathering, but even with hairstyles as they are, there are issues.

Something I'd settle for, though: EVERY hairstyle being made unisex. Would it lead to inevitable silliness? Yes! Would it lead to a tremendously expanded set of options for customization? HELL yes!!

Another thing I'd like to see: Actual 'messy', or at least believably disheveled hair options. Do you all remember that one quest where you talk with the Garlean deserter? It's obvious that they were trying to make him look scruffy with the hairstyle he's got, and they get credit for at least trying, but it's hard to believe that this dude's been roughing it in the wilderness for years with hair that looks like he oughtta be on a J-pop album cover.

Making the physics for hair to detect a surface and be clip-proof is very complex and would require a powerful computer to even run it decently. In the future they may be able to implement long hair without clipping for high end rigs. I don't even know of any single player games that have long haired characters with no clipping issues.

Even Tomb Raider has clipping issues with and without TressFX, and it arguably has the best hair (well, physics at the very least) in any game to my knowledge.

I do not even notice clipping really (Except the WHM staff when backmounted clips through the WHM hooded robe, which is ugh), so I would love to see longer hairstyles for both female AND male characters.

my only problem with long hair such as the type that Tifa Lockheart sported in Final Fantasy 7 (original version) is that hair that trails down to a person's knee's or lower would actually hurt if worn by a real person. This is why you don't see real world women (or the occasional man) wearing their hair that long. It just isn't practical.

And that is only taking into account the biological component of adding such long hair styles. From a purely computer graphics design point of view, they would automatically be required to turn off the stowed weapons mechanics for all weapons except those used by Pugilists, Arcanists, and the non-staff weapons used by Conjurer's and Thaumaturges (though this would require the stowed Shields be turned off as well) due to clipping issues that would be present with the long hair. These issues are already present with some of the longer hair styles already present in the game, but anything longer than what is currently present in the game would just be pushing the limits of what is reasonable.

They say that, but prove again and again that they do not give a damn about clipping issues.

Why do people keep talking about physics? That is for movies and stuff with incredible processing power.

For games you go with simply making hair skeletons that will animate the hair specific ways when animations are played.

Tera outfits change your hairstyle if the armor model goes around your neck/hair, making your hairstyle into short stance. It didn't really help to take out all the clipping, but it helped to get rid of major clipping issues if your armor was really big.

Yes really. The images you showed actually have less volume than the types of hair I was talking about. But you brought up an interesting point. I did a quick google search, and it does appear that there are a few people out there that do have hair that long, or hair extensions that long. That doesn't change the fact that these people probably suffer incredible headaches, because the human neck is not designed to support hair that long.

All that said, that doesn't change the fact that while such hair is possible in the real world, it really isn't all that feasible in a digital world where clipping issues play an extremely prominent role in determining what is and is not aesthetically pleasing.

Short hair > long hair, i say

Real hair would actually split and "clip" around objects.
If I put a quiver on and flip my hair back it will not cover it but fall around.

I want a hair style that is mid-calf length with long bangs below the eyebrows framing my face.

Didn't they already say no to this? I'm pretty sure I saw a thread with the exact same premise a couple months back.

Tera did a great job with hair. They allowed long hair, and if a tunic would cut into the hair, there would be an "updo" for that long hair while keeping the hair framing the face exactly the same, yet allowing the hair in the back to be put into a bun or a ponytail that sticks out further than most clothing items.

Personally, I don't mind clipping issues. I LOVE long hair and hate that games have kinda gotten rid of it. To me, female toons with long hair are the epitome of fantasy characters.

Personally, I hate clipping issues, drives me crazy. As I'm getting new gear/glamours, I'm constantly visiting the aesthetician to change my hair because I cannot stand the hair stupidly clipping through the gear.

So, if really long hair brings more clipping, then my opinion is these styles are not needed.

I would like some longer hair styles but just a bit longer then the ones we already have. Even though I would love some long hair going down half my character's back it would just clip way too much.

That's not really 'fixing' the problem so much as it is avoiding it, which is pretty much what SE is doing by not adding very long hairstyles.

I'd personally love some longer styles, and apparently so would the graphics designer as noted in an interview, but there are technical issues which need to be addressed to make it work. Not least of all, longer styles wouldn't flow as well with character movements.

I love the new Elezen one (longer with braid in the back) but don't want to be an Elezen.
