Is it my computer, or is it FFXIV?

My computer used to be able to run ffxiv with low settings and allow me to play for as long as I wanted, but several patches later I find myself killing enemies and all of a sudden my computer shuts down :(

I have 4GB of memory running on an Intel i7 core, 8-way processing, and an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. With the most recent patches in place, I can get maybe 10-20min of playtime before it shuts down all of a sudden. Is there something I'm missing, or is the game really demanding on hardware?

if you talking about low as standard or 7 then it's FFXIV -.- before the first hardware thing they did for 6hours am been getting low fps in city and outside for no reason before i ran the game at 60FPS outside and 50fps in battle and 30-45fps in city now it's like 50-60fps outside 35fps in battle and 20-30fps in city with a random lag spike of 1-15fps.

use the FF14 config tool to post your specs, and also give us all your config settings for 14; then we can tell you if its your computer, the game, or a combination of both.

There should be a button in teh FF14 config program that lets you copy/paste the PC config to your clipboard. using that is a good idea; it has a LOT of information and we don't want to overlook anything. ^^

Trying to find the button, but the window is just too large and unable to move it. Can't figure out how to resize it to where I can get to that button :(

It's a miracle you were even able to start the game with that. It's either the powersupply or the gpu that has heat issues I think.

Yup, didn't have room for a pc tower (still workin' on finding a gaming pc, not sure where to turn though).

It's not about something "newer" that is better. It's the problem that manufacturers build shabby gpus into most laptops. Imo there should only be 3 gpu models per generation: lowend for no d3d-usage at all, medium for average gamers and highend for full detail gamers. But currently the market is flooded with mostly useless mobile gpus. And not just that but the gpu manufacturers even trick people by giving the mobile chips similar names to the PCIe chips even though they are completely different and way slower.
That's why it's important to research every part of the laptop one wants to buy(for cheap laptops there's always a component that won't do any good).

The GPU system as a whole is a total joke and needs regulation of some type of standard naming system. Any normal person will see two items in front of them GPU XX70 and GPU X100 and will think GPU X100 is the newer card and has a higher number it must be better. Sadly in the GPU market that GPU XX70 will rock that X100.

Well for AMD the regular desktop series names make sense: ABCD where A is the generation, B the target audience(1-6=entry, 7=gamers, 8=highend, 9=special), C the feature lock(30=decreased features, 50=normal, 70=powered up, 90=special/dual chip) and D a number the OEM can decide. So a HD6850 would be fine to run all games and a HD5450 would be okay for watching movies and playing sims.
And laptop gpus can only be replaced in rare cases where it's a replacable card. Desktops can always be upgraded if they have the right slot (PCIe2.0 x16 for example)

FFXIV is terribly unoptermised and runs GPUs at 100% for no reason what so ever, so chances are your over heating, ive talked to alot of people with laptops that have the same problem

Crysis on max settings doesnt stress GPUs to 100%

Hmm...think it's possible that w/ a version update that ff14 won't stress GPUs as much? Don't get me wrong, I will be looking for a better system ^^

Yep, thats integrated graphics, lucky the computer even starts the game. I'd say it's likely heating up to much and causing it to crash. It's to much for that gpu. Try running a fan under your laptop to cool it down. If your overclocking, don't..

istant shut down can be a overheat problem... post the temp of the pg after 10-15 min of gaming.

I wanna thank everyone who took their time to help me out w/ my dilemma :)

I'm having a new system built, and I can have it as early as next week. I'll post the specs once I get it hooked up and everything, and can update it accordingly if there is a thing or two wrong with it ^^

Get at least at GTS 450 or equivalent AMD Card(5770 IIRC) if you want to play the game smoothly on high settings.(Both are cheap cards, you can get them for less than 100$ in the right places like EVGA's B-stock, or ebay) (My brother's PC that is a very bottlenecked Athlon II X2 system wtih a GTS 450 that only scores 2300 on the benchmark because of the bottleneck can still run the game at 1440x900 on highest settings without AO or DoF very well)

What is your budget?
Or are you having someone else do it for you? (that's what it sounded like)

Someone else building it, it'll be done next week so I can't wait ^^

@ Exander: Yeah, my new system is an actual pc and not another laptop. Gonna use my xbox 360 controller and hook it up to my "42 screen...I dunno why, but I cannot ditch the controller when it comes to gaming of any variety lol.
