RMT Solution?

So I know some of them are either hacked, stolen or sold accounts but the ones that aren't maybe there is a small fix? I'm thinking that at the account screen when naming your character that SE make the system flag to watch or kick back names as being unacceptable when they are something like Asdffg Fdsas. Make them have to put thought and work into coming up with real and unique names, not just a Bunche of letters they slide their fingers across. Just my two cent on the matter.

It's kind of hard to make a system that would flag names like that, it would end up flagging people whom create characters with odd names from another language. I've seen tons of people with almost unpronounceable names that pretty well look like they tossed a KB at the wall to come up with it.

They need to impose chat restrictions. Luke you need to be level 15 to use /shout, or can't use PM unless you were whispered first.

I would be on board with this or at least make it so you can check an option to stop /tell from anyone under 15

I suggested this in another thread and people acted like I was the devil for doing so.

Well I think from SE's end, if they catch someone spamming people, not only should the account be banned, but the IP address used to access that account be blocked permanently as well. That would go a good way to putting an end to that. Secondly, they should add an invisible mode for everyone else. These spammers are using the player search function to get names to whisper. If we the players can invisible mode ourselves off of the player search function, that would help us too.

Don't buy from them. Business no more profitable, rmt goes to another game, problem solved.

Well people ain't smart... It's a bandaid solution at best though, not like it takes long to get to 15, but it would help for a bit.

You cannot stop them. The irony is that you cannot do a thing, that when done, will solve a problem that cannot be solved otherwise.

what's to stop them just using the Random Name generator on the character creation screen then?

and it's not like level locked chat restrictions work either, every game I've played that has them still have just as many spam bots.

Blocking IP's usually doesn't work either, 9 times out of 10 they're using a proxy anyway. and They're not using the ingame player search either usually it's an outside tool which also usually automates the /tell spam as well, and even in games with an anon mode (which XIV has) they'll still bring you up.

long story short; if it was as simple as many of the "RMT Solution" suggestions were....they'd have done it already.

What's to stop them creating other names. All you need for a random name generator is for it to put a couple of groups of letters together. This will not do anything to stop RMT.

Now they're using shout and yell function while spamming random players around.

It is much easier to track asdfasdfasd as RMT then "Bob the Adventurer", I for one welcome their (RMTs) laziness as it makes them stand out like a sore thumb

Get rid of shards. Its the easiest way for an RMT to make cash.

Then what? Get rid of crystals? After that clusters? Then low teir crafting mats? Though the "slippery slope" argument is a logical fallacy, in this case they'll always find something they can exploit to make their money.

The only real solution is to ban them when you can, they're kinda like cockroaches, sure you can call in the exterminator, but it's going to be awhile before you finally get them all...if you ever do.

I think a good idea would be an option where you can turn off all incomming PM or only people on your friends list can PM you. Facebook has this option aswell as most chat programs, its an easy fix the only downside I see is gil sellers might start spam shout. It might not be an end to it all but i believe it will help. Iv just blacklisted 8 gil sellers in 30 minutes, today has by far been the worst experience iv had with them and it takes me out of the game and makes me not want to play. I hope you all agree and hope the developers do also.

I dunno it seems pretty simple to me. It appears shards exist solely as a method that level one characters can make money off of. There are no passives that make them easier to get at higher (or max) of any gathering levels, and the ability you do get, you can only use for an extra measly 8 shards once every 5 minutes or so. Obviously RMT is going to abuse this. It takes no dedication. Clusters could still exist being a level 50 item, and possibly crystals, I think you need to be about level 30 to get them. If you needed to be level 50 (for clusters) or even 30 (for crystals) there is a greater chance SE would catch a bot leveling before it has a chance to farm the shards/crystals/clusters.

Shards are fluff anyways. They don't add anything to the crafting experience, they're simply an added expense and time sink. They could effectively achieve the same thing by making everything require 1 more of each material it already requires. Shard usage goes up exponentially at about level 30 or 40, and even more so for a weaver, but there is never a faster way to get them (and no, the ability for 8 extra every 5 minutes barely counts). If you're leveling a character and not trying to make a ton of money, or can't because of market saturation, you're probably stuck mining your own shards, which takes around 2 hours for 1500 shards. You can easily go through 1500 shards simply leveling normally (not abusing levequests) in a couple levels, forcing you to either come up with the cash (often without crafting if the market is cornered) and paying bots for the shards, or mining them yourself.

Honestly, the only way to prevent or discourage bots and RMT (other than improving their detection system, if they have one at all) is to make the things they go after either extremely easy for every player to get in the quantities they need, or make it unreachable without a somewhat significant time investment by leveling a class.

IP bans have been quite worthless for like 10 years and can lead to innocents being locked out (most private customer IPs change based on ISP's DHCP settings), not to mention the practically endless amount of proxies there are. The search invisibility feature could work for a while, after that, they'll simply send their bots in crowded areas and start reading up player names from RAM. The RMT wouldn't be so rabid in this game if they didn't have so many buyers.

I don't even care about getting rid of rmt anymore. Just give me some options to filter out who I don't want to send me tells.

RMT tells has not improve since launch and feels like it has gotten worst at times. I'm beginning to think there's some conspiracy going on with Gil sellers and S.E.

There is no easy solution to RMT, people always come up with these ideas and think how great they are. Or, ask for the blacklist to be unlimited, which is not feasible. The thing about getting /tell only from certain members is an okay idea, but it's too much work to have to verify against your friends list/FC list/LS lists just of hundreds of players just to match one name. Even with a more sophisticated search algorithm it's something that's just messy at this point.

The easiest solution is to allow for a chat filter which can block all incoming messages with simple filter syntax that players can use for RMT and non-RMT messages the same. This would allow for the players to control what they want and don't want to see, and Square Enix won't have to worry about punishing the wrong players from a potential wrong match that a player might catch with their own syntax.

The main problem is that not everyone will know how these things work, or wouldn't know how to update them. Only certain people would benefit from this.

More importantly, however, even through all of this RMT will STILL be an issue. The only true solution is, as someone already said, to stop supporting them. Unfortunately, this isn't something we can control.

So, because there isn't really a solution that anyone can easily use besides blacklisting and reporting RMT messages, I wouldn't expect to see anything like a filtering system implemented any time soon, that's just how it works.

The problem with even a syntax filter, the RMT already alter the format of their /tells, as many games have tried that route and it too has failed.

It's an arms race. The developers create a countermeasure, the RMT adapt and create a countermeasure to the countermeasure, with the only people being affected by the developers efforts being legitimate player (eg. Not being able to mail stuff to your alts). In many cases the "cure" winds up being worse than the "disease". I'm not trying to defend RMT, but there is no way to "solve" the problem, even band aid solutions will only be effective for maybe a week tops until the bad guys build a work around. Then it's back to the status quo.

The only way that RMT spam finally dies off is because they infest another game that is more lucrative for them.

Making fantasia potions saleable would be another way. That way, people like me who don't have time/interest for farming massive amounts of money can buy Gil from SE, essentially. (DISCLAIMER: I have never and will never buy Gil from RMT) I just kick around with about 40k gil ~_~

I would LOVE to be able to write my own regex filter. It would be best if the things that match the filter would have the option of going into another chat window tab (that I can refuse notifications from and don't have to look at, but if I was expecting a message from someone could check in case it got filtered)

And people could share their regexes with people who don't know regex and it would be great.
