Anyone else in Perth (or anywhere in Aus) get nighttime lag?

Hey everyone,

This has been happening for a few weeks now.
It's probably just my ISP (TPG is utterly useless), but I'm just curious if anyone else in Aus gets lag at nighttime.

This has happened to me everyday for the last 2-3 weeks without fail. All cases happening around 5-6pm, and continuing until morning.

During the day, I get a perfect connection, and am able to dodge AoE without any trouble.
Nighttime is a completely different story.
Players warping around, being hit by AoE long after I'm out of it, combos not activating etc. etc.

It's....barely playable at the best of times.

Just curious, this happen to anyone else?

I'm in Perth too (with Telstra) and I find on Ridill the connection sometimes rubberbands between about 5pm to 1am Perth time (which is only an hour behind Japan time incidentally) - because Ridill is a JP server, it's not hard to see that time period would be therefore 'peak times' - people are coming home from work and school and decide to unwind by playing FFXIV. Sunday evenings particularly seem to the worst time for this, but it varies.

tpg tends to have 15% packet loss if your routing through melbourne. its not effecting any other aus internet provider except there even if playing on jp server

Im in brisbane also with TPG and I've actually noticed quite often in the evenings, we'll start getting random dc's and lag when everything was fine up until that point.

Sounds like your average high use time with a crappy ISP. As in they don't have good enough equipment to support all their customer's at peak usage times.

I get a random severe lag around 7.15pm or so. I am based in Sydney, and I am with TPG too. I don't know if I'm normal, but I am 4.2km away from the nearest exchange, so my speeds sync at a maximum speed of 3 Mb/s.

TPG is nearly unplayable for me. I have an issue where if I Alt + Tab out of the FFXIV game window (I play Windowed Mode), ie. it's not the active screen, there is a high chance I get 90k'ed.

Really frustrated as well.

Some of my friends in Perth have been experiencing this recently too. In QLD, on Telstra, I haven't been having any issues.

same TPG in Sydney night-time lag like everyone in my PT stop move for 30- 40 sec and then everyone in my PT fast forward like. i want my NBN!!

Seems like it's TPG users o_o funny because I've been with Optus (worst ever) and telstra (not as bad but still pretty bad) and TPG has been amazing in comparison (aside from those few months my old roommate was permanently torrenting something eating up all the bandwidth without telling us making us think TPG was crap)

I never thought out internet was that bad in Australia, having started with dialup in my teenage years to present, but living in Korea for a short while - wow. Our internet really does suck!

Hello I'm from Perth on the sever (Behemoth) and I don't get much lag there are some times where there is lag but most of my time playing I have not had any nightmare lag, I'm with Telstra.m :/ sorry to here about your lag problems.

Hmm, seems like it's definitely a problem on TPG's end.
Since signing up with these guys, it's been nothing but issues.

The second my contract is up, I'm going straight to another ISP.

I'm with TPG, in Perth and I'm on Tonberry(JP).

Your situation sounds far worse than mine to be perfectly honest. I started using WTFast some months back due to the lag that was introduced (by SE changing something) after 2.1. It made a big difference. However, I generally don't see the spikes that were around post 2.1 and 2.2 anymore. E.g. I don't have any problems at all for the most part.


Is there anything else running on your connection? Are your housemates bringing down torrents or anything? Do you have other devices that are connected to the Net? When did this start happening? Have you rung TPG and asked them about the problem? Tried running an "ipconfig /flushdns" and rebooting your router?


At the very least you could pick up WTFast trial version and route through SG3 and see how you go, that gives me the best results by a long way. WTFast also provides a decent ping graph so you'll be able to see the history. A nice flat line is what you want, if it's bouncing all around then the problem is typically within your network (speaking from personal exprience). What you will see on a stable connection is the occasional spike, but the overall graph will be flat.

Anyway, quite happy to answer questions and help. But, I wouldn't churn ISP's until you're well and truly convinced that it's their problem. It can take upwards of a week and might not solve your issue.
