They used to be.
Then the animations for holding the weapons were changed for each class, and we were given unique casting animations for THM/CNJ.
I think I recall even in the very early stages (Alpha) they were still two handed weapons, then during the early stages of the Beta the new animations replaced them.

SE should work on a 2hand animation for 2hand weapons again and not just give them the 1hand animation.
Or change them into 1hand staffs so we can hold a shield in the free left hand
Can't believe I never noticed that this was what had been bothering me about my BLM for so long. Seems incredibly lazy and unobservant on SE's side.
You guys keep reminding me how much smoother and unique animation was in the earlier version. Damn you!
Now we're all just a bunch of each others clones. I loved the way the races held their weapons differently. :(
As mentioned before, it wasn't lazy it was to reduce development time and overall data costs when replacing the old animations (which had to be done for the most part)
Two animations are more expensive than one, using the same animation set for single handed weapons as for two handed is much quicker which is what ARR was seeking trying to make an MMO in only a few years, compared to the usual 5 year cycle for MMOs.
Having only one animation across all races and genders (Roegadyns/Lalafells sometimes have unique ones) is an easier and more efficient animation process. Had ARR been given 1-2 more years development time, then perhaps details such as this would have been considered in the new animations.
To go back and adjust this would require making completely new holding, casting and walk/run animations when a two handed stave in drawn.
Which would on estimate be a total of 10-20 new animations (not taking into account that Roegadyns/Lalafell may require different sets), which would take a very large amount of time (and with two new jobs on the horizon I'd doubt the time will be taken to consider changing it just yet)
However! In the future it would be great if they could take the time to revise the animation sets.
I've seen my character take that 2h stance with THM weapons before. I'm not sure what causes it but it's usually when I'm getting punched in the face I'll see that pose for a moment before my cast finishes or I start a new one.
So that idle animation is still there at least. dunno why they don't use it.

What you're seeing is a parry. The reason why you're doing it with both hands is there's only two parry animations: The PLD one and the WAR one. Non-tanks use the WAR one which takes into account the fact that the WAR does actually two hand their weapon.
At least someone else noticed it lol I was going to mention it, seeing as no one else did :P
I'm sure a lot of the animations are still there, but then again, this is SE >.> It'll probably take them years upon years to do anything, if they even do lol It's kind of a let down that everyone (minus Roe) hold their weapons the same :/ Sure it'd be time consuming to do and it doesn't really matter, but it'd be nice to see different motions for each race/gender, even for the skills. I can feel the rage already, but XI had this, it was nice. If a mmo from over a decade ago can do it, I'm sure if SE put some effort into it, they could do it here too, but then again like I said, it is SE lol
As highly amusing as it is to have this pointed out if they were to actually make them two handed animations I don't think it'd look very good. At least as far as throwing fireballs goes. Healing it kind of works when whm (almost) holds the staff up with two hands to cure, but using it two handed offensively and making it look good would be a tall order.
