Guy gamers who play girl characters

I've met a few on FFXIV, and I'm so curious...Why play a girl character in game if you are a guy IRL? I guess the same question for girls who play guys. Not looking to troll, just genuinely wondering.

I guess because I view my character as a representation of myself, I play a guy in game because I am a guy IRL. So I'd like to understand the reasons why others would make a different choice.

Because I can. Plus I'm not going to stare at a guys butt everyday.

Simple, because others don't view their character as a representation of themselves. I.E Playing Lightning in FF13.

Because if they have to look at their character's rear end all the time might as well be a female or something or other.

Really.... If every guy play male characters than all u will see on mordona is a horde of dudes, and everywhere else.

I'd wager 3/4s of all female characters in this game are males - although it's probably much higher.

The reason is simple, it's more enjoyable (for a guy at least) to look at a cute avatar than a boring male one.

Same reason people play lalafells even though they aren't 3ft tall in real life.

Because I'm heterosexual.

It's a video game, people play what they want because more than likely, that's what they enjoy for whatever reason. Do you ask that when people pick male/female in fighters? Same thing in every regard, and always a silly question.

Because you don't want to play yourself in a game. And girl characters look nicer and it can be fun to play a character that doesn't look like you at all.

Why are people always asked to justify this?

A character is not you, it isn't a self insert, you don't have to be exploring your feminine side or anything like that... Though MMOs have more flexibility in making it look more like one if you want it to...

Personally, I consider characters as a concept. Single player games usually have that already done, but in MMOs... well, think of it as like designing the protagonist...

I made my character to look like me with white hair... his rear isn't round enough, though and his junk is a bit small. Poor guy. Oh well, he has magic.

Because of circumstances from other MMOs, I am uncomfortable playing a female character. Guys don't bother me when I play a male.
Plus, I'm a roleplayer. I have more fun Roleplaying with a male character than a female one.

We also have a guy in out FC who rps a female character, and he does an amazing job at RPing that character.

The gender of the person behind the avatar honestly doesn't matter to us Roleplayers.

Because I have another character that's a guy. I alternate between making male and female characters. It certainly helps me keep track of which character is where in any given RPG, that's for sure.

Are you asking her to put the ears and tail on... or are you putting them on after asking her to dye her hair?

These are important questions.

When I play male characters it's usually because I want a change. Game characters are not me, so I feel no restriction of gender or any other kind of restriction really. I tend to play female more often (and I am female), but I think that's because I am forced to play a male character in so many video games I like, that it still has a novelty value that I am allowed to play as a female character. I suspect a lot of gamers, both male and female, have a similar reasoning for playing a female character - ie because we can and there's actually an option to not go with the seeming default of male.

I had planned to play a male, in design similar to my FFXI char, but there came a point in his life where he was wearing a skirt, dangly earrings, and a frilly shirt

I picked a Female character IG because I like looking at female bodies.

Aesthetically, female character models are usually more appealing than male models. It's a rare thing indeed when the male character models look like they have had just as much thought and care into making them.

As for me: most of my characters are female, just as myself. But my main is a male Miqo'te and the reasons I play him is because a: my friends on are Leviathan, b: a female character would be silly with the name, c: there were no male Miqo'te available for play in 1.0 and d: Ganth is a representation of a dream character (though younger in appearance than the dream-version).

I see this question asked on almost every MMO forums. I am a guy in RL, but I just think seeing a girl in videogames is more cool than a burly dude,
It was when I played Resident Evil 1 on PS1 way back, it was so much more badass having a girl Jill Valentine kick zombies butt, than the strongman Chris Redfield.

Plus I like to cut a break with reality for a while when I play videogames, and most often, the animations, combat and gear looks better on a female character than on males.

And if you were to choose your own gender due to reality, then what class would you be? A Mechanic, receptionist, dairyfarmer? As being a Dragoon, Paladin, Blackmage prolly isnt possible in the realm of Earth like it is in Eorzea ;)

Whenever I have a game where I can create a character, I will always go through all of the races, both genders, and see what I can make. Whatever comes out cooler-looking is the one I end up playing.

I don't like Lalafells.
I knew cat-people would be the most numerous because the internet loves cats.

Although I had some appealing-looking characters of both genders for other races I like, I settled for the Hume female. The game lets me change classes freely, so I have no reason for an alt. I just go with whatever I think is better looking at the time. Males in some games, females in others. I had 3 male and 3 female characters in SWTOR, for example.

For the Resident Evil reference above, Jill Valentine is always awesome.

For the record, I address everyone with gender-neutral terms unless you have told me otherwise and I assume everyone is a dude. Even if you have been confirmed as a woman, I will still talk to you like I talk to everyone else.

it's funny how this comes up in every MMO forum...usually at least once a year.

I'll give my justification, Typically it's cause game male models look awful. If they're not "Grizzled Lumps of meat with a mouth hole" like most western games then they're "Virtually indistinguishable from girls" like most Eastern games. And typically Female characters are a little better done, though still have some pitfalls, either too sexy (like most elves/dark elves/etc) or just weird lookin' ("monster" races/dwarves/etc) but usually you can find one that doesn't look hideous. Then it comes down to gear, in XIV they went with the rather novel (which really shouldn't be) approach of gear looking practical on Female models rather than the "chainmail bikini", and for some of it looks better on female models.

actually I really like it, looks like a Lorica should though the "skirt" bit is a bit anachronistic. (believe it or not female versions do exist form the period and they had the "six pack" on them)

Because it appeals to me visually as an option. There's no contract that I signed when I was born that instigates that when i play a game I have to play the same genre and same race as my real life version with the same physical features as myself.

So why not dig deeper. There's also non-human characters option that are presentable.

Why do I choose orcs, elves, undead, cyborgs, etc when I'm human IRL? Well like I said before it appeals to me visually as an option.

We can even go deeper.

Why do I choose prefer 2H swords, black magic, guns, or other forms of weaponry if I don't do them IRL? Well I'll say again because it appeals to me visually as an option.

We can even go deeper and touch things like Auctioning, Exploration, Dungeons, Transportation, etc since a lot of these things I wont do in real life.

I meant the clipping on a lot of models. There's a group that feels rather strongly about it.
I personally like the way the armor looks as far as the actual model, but the clipping is rather horrid on the women-folk.
I haven't actually seen a female character wearing it (and my tank isn't my main, so I'm not spending soldiery on it) up close.
But dat picture. O_o

really that's more of an artifact of how the armor is made I bet, they probably start with the Hyur male model then bend and warp it to fit the other races. Personally while the Daystar gear doesn't clip (as bad) I think it's over all look is a little too Warhammer High Elf so I had to glamour it, where as I could stand the clipping of the Lorica cause at least the over all look is good.

Men should only play male characters, women should only play female characters. That way it's less awkward for me to ask people to be my internet catgirlfriend.

Guy characters are almost always hideous in MMOs. ;_; I don't blame guys for wanting to play female characters. Also, if you knew some of the whispers females get when they play MMOs, you'd probably understand why a lot of them play male characters...

For me it comes down to imagination. I'm a creative person by trade, so I don't see myself as being the main character but rather me watching my character go through the story. I had made 4-5 characters with the character creator before the game was released and decided on the catgirl because she had the cutest animations and personality. I then decided to model her after one of my own cats for inspiration, including the name.
