Question from the original FF14

I have read up on the story from the original FF14...and I love the cutscenes that explain it all.
But I had a question. How much of that was played interactively? Did players participate in battling Bahamut and fight along side Louisoix?
Were the "heroes" NPCs in the original?
Or did these events just happen "between" games and no player interaction?

Well, the 'battling Bahamut and fighting to protect Louisoix' was really only a video that was the culmination of the events leading to the original game's shutdown - on the last day of original service of version 1.0, anyone who had ever had a version 1.0 account had their character restored and were able to login to the game to participate regardless of their then current subscription status - in the final hour of service players were constantly directed to the (now non-existent) Camp Brittlebark in Mor Dhona for 'the hour of reckoning' via system messages in the chat log - but it basically just involved fighting endless groups of high level Garlean soldiers and magitek Vanguards and Juggernauts. Then the game ended abruptly with the servers shutting down, and the launcher updating with a link to the 'End of an Era' trailer - representing the Calamity.

It was a fun way to send the original game off, but unfortunately, given the instability of the version 1.0 servers and the buggy nature of the game, most people like me ended up with the 1.0 equivalent of a 'Code 900000' error and couldn't log back in (this happened to me with about half an hour to go). It was still fun though and something I'll never forget. :)

It should be noted that the actual Carteneau Flats where the 'final battle' takes place in that video was actually completely inaccessible to players, hence why players instead fought battles around Camp Brittlebark.

Also Louisoix before then was a specific npc who normally resided in Apkulla Falls in Gridania and was the npc who gave players the quests to battle the Primals (he stood where Y'hmitra now stands - in fact, there's an npc in that area now in ARR who cryptically refers to Louisoix's former location there ;)).

Lore wise we (the 1.0 players) were not part of the battle at Carteneau Flats, but we were part of a diversion force of adventurers who fought very high level Garleans and their Magitek H-1's and Juggernaughts around Northwest of Camp Brittlebark which is in the no longer existing southern half of Silver Tear Lake.

If we hadn't then they would of been able to reinforce from Castrum Novum, the now Castrum Centri I believe, and overwhelm the Main Host and win the battle outright.


I am remembering this off the top of my head, so please correct me if I've made any mistakes.

So annoying when someone in your party forgot to turn in tapers lol... Happens every time.

In the Echo of Carteneau you get around Level 15, the leaders of the Companies refer to the 'foreigners' who were not part of the main battle, those were the 1.0 players. The people you see in the battle in the End of an Era trailer are native Gridanians, Ul'dahns and Lominsians who made up the bulk of the Grand Companies; very, very few of whom survived.

Very good graphic come with a cost, like limiting showable objects (players, enemies, NPCs) to 30.

sounds like a very cool way to end it....well...by ending it :) world ends...servers go down.

I don't have the mental capacity right now to find it, but the Job-ed out WoLs in the End of an Era and A New Beginning scenes were never in-game NPCs, although they were the characters from various other FFXIV cinematics, mainly the original one with the Malboro fight. The story is something like the Hyur had the Echo vision of that party and eventually went out to find them. Most of those characters (except the male Elezen) became the party members in the EoaE and ANB scenes. I can't wait to see more of Derpy-Hyur, as I'm sure he'll be in the first expansion's cinematic trailer.

Actually, word-of-God says (a la, Ferne), that 'Derplander' and his party are both a metaphor for the player's own character, and are also actually unique npcs of their own. There was a huge thread made by Moose on the old 1.0 Lodestone (now archived) which went into great detail about that (and other 1.0 storyline-related material, in fact it was what effectively caused SE to add this Lore section to the forum in the first place, that thread became so bogged down it was decided it warranted it's own forum!). I admit it was that thread that drew me to finally signing up on the Lodestone in the first place after resisting it for so long ;)).

yeah i was just wondering if those guys were just meant to be representatives of the players...or were they actual NPCs. also the Warriors of Light that we come across various times in the game...I was wondering if they were in 1.0 as well.

I suppose the only true warriors of light would be the Scions . . . . well, ones that we know of anyway

Mainly, representatives/front-men (aka real-world faces of the game).
What Warriors of Light did we actually see/meet in the storyline...anyone know? Anonymoose?

Yeah, I'm a bit sad that we haven't seen hide nor hair of Derplander and his Merry Band since they showed up as pop-up text bubble NPCs in open beta.

Hi there !

Wouldn't be nice for non V1 players to be able to play somehow the events "before the meteor" ? It would be an easy content add ad a way to give us an access to the previous storyline quests.
Personnaly, I would be pleased to play it only to know the lore a bit more.

What's your opinion about this ?

there is another popular MMO that has something similar to this.
i always enjoy lore. i think having things taken from V1, or reworked....heck even allow us to participate in the loisoix and bahamut battle...that would be awesome.
play through events that have been mentioned but we never have seen. maybe they could be like "echoes of the aether" or something.

It won't happen though I dare say - the whole point of the 7th Umbral Era events being written into 1.0's storyline in the first place was to give a narrative reason for the complete change in map design from 1.0 to ARR - 1.0's storyline and all the connected events was therefore a once-only thing never to be repeated (in fact, the achievement for completing the 7th Umbral Era story in 1.0 was literally called 'Once in a Lifetime!').

So yeah, apart from the occasional Echo-vision of events pre-Calamity, I can probably safely say players will never experience that again. Yes it's unfair for those who didn't play 1.0, but that's life sadly.

You can find various videos of 1.0 cutscenes and storyline synopses online, so it's not a total loss of history.

I have a question regarding this. The heroes in the intro cut scene are basically the 1.0 players, and the lone hero about to enter Eorzia are th 2.0 players, right?

Yes and no. Only 1.0 players who satisfied a rather arbitrary content requirement (completing the Lunar Transmitter boss fight in version 1.0) were given the special 'Legacy' opening where their character 'warps' into Eorzea and just kind of walks into their starting city (although somewhat ridiculously wearing newbie armour and a level 1 weapon!) and are eventually remembered by npcs as being a 'Warrior of Light'. All other 1.0 players are just kind of lumped in with a new adventurer by being given the same opening of them appearing on the chocobo carriage or ferry with the merchant (never mind what we've been doing for the past five years!).

In some respects, this could be considered a lazy way of writing 1.0 characters into the storyline, but given the fact the development team were really rushing to meet the release deadline, it's understandable that it was implemented in this way as it would have eaten into valuable development time to implement three different storylines. (I created a backstory for my character explaining what happened to her in the Calamity and why she returned five years later on a chocobo carriage to Gridania wearing different clothes to what she was wearing then so it doesn't really worry me that much anymore anyway ;)).

Thanks for clearing that up. At least they slightly rewarded the legacy players by giving them a special cut scene lol.

If kind of did the same thing for my character Enkidoh. My character basically left Eorzea after the Ascian CS in 1.0, scared me right off :p!

Did characters that got the special cut scene retain their levels earned in the first game or were they level 1 as well?

They kept their level but had to redo all class/job quests, I believe.

Correct.
I last logged out of 1.23 in full BLM Artifact armor, standing on the bridge for Gryphon's crossing, back in mid-2012.
When I logged back in, I had a lot of "dated" gear and some Mage's Gear (i52 set, I believe) equipped. My character was level 50. But I was still treated like I'd never cast Fire at anything in my life.
Also, fun note: That character is one of the rare BLM breed that has a level 0 ARC. 1.0 required a PGL, not an ARC for BLM's sub-job.
But ARR let me keep my job stone anyway.
