How do you slot your Cross-Hotbars? - White Mage

This is something I've agonized over a lot, and I've reached something I'm fairly comfy with, but it's not perfect by any means and I'd love to see what others have done.

Ok, so I'd like to explain some of the choices and what each macro does. Firstly the macro's. Please bear with me if this is obvious stuff :/

Aero <tt>, Aero II <tt>, Stone <tt>, Stone II <tt> (not Fluid Aura or Holy tho)), and Virus <tt>(Arcanist cross skill):

Line 1 makes the icon act just like the standard skill icon (greyed timer effect on cooldown). Line 2 makes my target's target my focus target. This is useful because even when you're not targeting the mob directly, you can see the Aero, Aero II, Virus status in the mini interface element for focus targets, like so (top right - notice Aero and Aero II effect can been seen on Betrayed Soul, even though Tank is target I'm casting the macro on:

Line 3 attacks my target's target, or my actual target. Only one of line 3 or 4 will work and the other will fail, so if I'm on the tank, line 3 will succeed and the Areo will automatically cast on the mob the tank is targeting. If I'm on the mob, line 4 will succeed and the mob is still Aero-ed. What this emulates is the auto-target forwarding setting on some other MMO's. One downside is that if you press the skill too early just before the cooldown of the last is up, it won't automatically queue and cast when ready like standard skills do. Also you will get an annoying error message pop up on screen every cast for the line that fails (you get used to ignoring it).

Assist:

I use it to switch target easily from tank to the mob, or from mob to the tank / whoever's got aggro. Also in line 2 I clear any focus target that I will have set by casting a damage skill previously. Often when solo, my macroed skills make me the focus target, so after the battle ends I just want to clear that focus target element from the interface (particularly as it causes other interface elements to hide, like the time and experience bar).

This macro can be set up after you obtain the Swiftcast cross-skill from THM lvl26. It allows you to raise a player almost instantly instead of waiting for an 8 second cast. The reason I'm setting a focus target here is different from before. Notice the primary target <t> is being made the focustarget this time. After I hit the Swiftraise macro button, I want to be able to switch targets immediately without worrying which target I have by the time line 5 is executed. If line 5 was /ac Raise <t> the macro might fail if I switched my primary target away from my KO'ed ally too soon before the line executed.

Sleeping <1>, Sleeping <2>:

Ok, these two macro's are used for crowd control. A lot to explain but the result is fairly simple. A target is pushed away using fluid Aura then slept. A message is automatically shown in party chat to inform other party members and the ignore1 or ignore2 mark is added depending on which macro is chosen / pressed.

So again in line 2 focus target used here for same reason as with Swiftraise macro (except it's even more important here because I don't want to sit there staring at the mob's markings for a couple seconds before I can switch targets. I want to press the macro and start thinking of my next move / switch target).

line 3 - 5 are self explanatory, but in case you aren't aware /wait .5 is important to ensure the server processes the command. If you hit standard Fluid Aura followed by Repose very fast you'll notice the Repose is ignored. You need a little delay for the server to cope as I understand it.

Line 6 is a message to the party to let them know I'm sleeping a target (sound effect included ^^). The {} here shouldn't be copied but indicate auto-translate is being used. So, for example. when typing the macro just type "sl", press R1, then choose "Sleep" and the auto-translate version is used.

Line 7 - 9. I'm marking the target to ignore in line 9, but first I un-mark it in line 7 because if for some reason the tagget already has an Ignore1 mark, then line 9 would toggle it off (annoyingly).

Line 10 I turn the focus target off just for completeness / convenience, since I don't need that as a focus target anymore.

Before setting this macro up, one of the most frustrating things for me was when I accidentally double pressed the Cleric Stance button, switching Cleric Stance OFF then straight back ON. I did this all the time for some reason and it was such a pain to then need to wait for the Cleric Stance cooldown to switch back from ON to OFF again. I saw this solution suggested by someone on the forum and have found stance dancing much easier since.

For this to work well you need to have a primarily healing hotbar and a primarily dps hotbar. On Cross-Hotbar 1 we have the "Healing Hotbar" macro which will switch stance then put you on the Healing hotbar (2). On Cross-Hotbar 2 we have the "Attack Hotbar" macro, which will switch stance then put you on the Attack Hotbar.

The idea is that you don't use the same slot on each hot bar, but instead place a commonly used skill in the corresponding slot of the other hotbar, that you don't mind casting accidentally.

For example, after pressing L2+Up from Cross-hotbar 1 I'll be switching Cleric Stance OFF (in theory) and then instantly and automatically sent to Cross-Hotbar 2. Now, if I accidentally spam R2+triangle I'll be hitting the Divine Seal skill slotted in that space on Cross-hotbar 2. This is often the skill I'll want to hit anyway, and always more desirable that accidentally switching back to Cleric Stance and having to wait for the cooldown before I can switch it off again.

This works well for me, but may not be for everyone. If you manually switched hotbars for some reason by tapping R1 (like you wanted to Esuna without coming out of Cleric, or you wanted to Virus without going into Cleric) - after the fact you may decide you actually do want to switch stance - you may find you're on the Healing hotbar already but still in cleric, or on the attack hotbar already but not in cleric. Then pressing the Cleric Stance Macro sends you to the undesired Cross-hotbar and as a workaround you have to manually switch back again with R1. Another option with my setup is to Press R2 > L2 simultaneously and Triangle, which is where the standard Cleric Stance skill is sat. I got used to this, but it can be fiddly to say the least in the heat of battle.

Ok O_O; that explains the macro's and a little of the layout choices too, but now I'd like to list some other reasons behind my other choices:

• Healing bar / Attack bar - As well as working beautifully with the /chotbar macro's above, it's nice to have healing and dps skill's separated. Although I may use skills from both sets while playing solo, I need to base my layout decisions on making the most difficult content easier. In a dungeon boss fight is where I'll need the Crosshotbar layout to just work without thinking too much. When it hit's the fan, I don't want to be switching hotbars at all ideally - I want to have all my healing skills accessible in a single set.
  
• Limit to two main hotbars - again this works better with the Healing / Attack setup, but also I find it's just so much easier in general to keep main battle cross-hotbars limited to 2. If my desired skill isn't on my current set, I just tap R1 and it's there. To make the most of this, 'enable customization for when weapon is drawn' in the settings (see 5th image). This limit's the Cross-hotbar sets the R1 button can cycle through to just the two main battle sets (when my weapon is drawn). I'd rather just tap R1 and get the "other" Cross-hotbar, instead of taking a second to think which Set I'm on now, then press correct R1+button combination for the other set.
  
• I like it organised - as much as possible while compromising with the other ideals listed here, I like to keep things organized. I.e. Skill's like Cure II, Medica II, Aero II, and Stone II always sit in the Northwest slot of their counterpart (Cure, Medica, etc). Skills I cast on others are generally found on the right, and skills I cast on myself are generally organized on the left. This helps me to find everything again really fast after taking a break from the class / game, and also just makes me happy ^^; but in many cases this rule must be broken and I place higher priority on the other principles listed here.
  
• Consider which skill you'll want to use while moving - There are many instant cast skills or macros like Aero, Regen, Benediction, Sprint, and Assist that you'll benefit be able to casting while on the move from AOE's etc. Because your left thumb will be occupied with moving the character, it's usefull to place these kinds of skills on the slot's you press with your right thumb (X, Circle, Square, Triangle). I break this rule a few times like with Virus, Divine Seal, Presence of mind - this is mostly cause of the organization point above, but also because I don't use Virus and Divine Seal enough while moving to worry about it too much.
  
• Most used moves in the comfy spot - moves like Cure, Cure II, Regen, Aero, Aero II and Stone II are used over and over, more than any other, so they get the comfy spot, which is for me the R2+(X, Circle, Square, Triangle). I can just squeeze down on them all day long while running all over the place and never get a tired, poorwly hand.
  
• Consider combo's / followup moves - For example, After casting sleep I may want to mark the target to be ignored. Therefore I make sure Ignore1 is in the corresponding slot that Sleep is in. This makes it easier to do the routine - L2+Left (Repose), keeping L2 down - L2 > R2 simultaneously + Left (mark Target to Ignore 1).
  
• Some moves need to be on both Cross-Hotbars

  Sprint - When I want to sprint it's an emergency, so I wanna be able to do it without switching hot-bars first. If it wasn't on both hotbars I probably wouldn't bother sprinting in situations where it could have saved me from an AOE or got me positioned for a Medica in time. That get's it a spot on both sets for me.
  
  Assist - Even though my Attack Skills go through to the tanks target, there are often time's I want to manually switch target. If I'm dps'ing and the tank is cycling, I wanna assist and stay on the first target, rather than follow him round all the mobs. It's better to eliminate that single mob fast to reduce healing required overall. If I'm dps-ing on a mob, I find it convenient to L2+circle (assist) back to the tank, and also if the tank lost aggro (or in fates) it's helps me find the enemies target quickly. This get's a slot on both for me but I hear assist can be assigned to L3 now, so I'll be looking into that ^^.
  
  Sleep - I love to sleep mobs (hence the name Bynder). Less damage overall means less healing for me and less repairs for everyone. Ideally if I want to get any sleeps in, I want to do it quickly before the mobs surround the tank - this keeps the slept mob separated from the pack, preventing it getting hit by aoe's or targeted accidentally by an ally. Because sleeping an enemy doesn't depend on which stance I'm currently in, but does benefit from being accessible quickly, I grant it a slot on both hotbars. note about sleeping mobs: It's not good to just sleep mobs if it doesn't fit in with the playstyle of the other party members. If the dd / tank want's to AOE then I'll adapt and cure harder instead, but there's still often a mob straying from the tank or a patrolling enemy where a sleep comes in real handy.

  I also have Shroud of Saints and Presence of Mind on both hotbars, but I'm not sure that's essential. If PS3 could have an additional standard hotbar for monitoring cooldowns (like PC) I would be happy to remove the duplicate of each from one set.
  
  Oh and for obvious reasons I try to keep the duplicated skills in the same corresponding slot for both Cross-hotbars.
  
• Additional L2 + R2 simultaneous slots - I use these for two things. Marking - it's handy to have mark's at your fingertips without switching to a separate hotbar, especially when you are marking something on the fly during battle like a slept mob to ignore. I make L2 > R2 link to a shared hotbar so that it's the same for all my other classes too. Situational Skills and Macro's- Some skills and macro's are very situational and I find these well suited to the R2 > L2 overflow slots. I place things like Raise and SwiftRaise, which is not used often enough to warrant a space on my main healing hotbar, and Crowd Control Macro's for those occasional situations where I want to push a mob out away from the pack and then sleep it. Furthermore I keep a standard Cleric stance there in case I don't want to use the macro'ed version and have to switch hotbars back (don't use that much but it's an option). I also have one PVP skill there, but I feel I'll use set 4 for PVP as I get more skills.
  
• Potions - I rarely use potions at the moment but when I do I don't mind manually switching to Cross-hotbar 3 with R1+X (can't be cycled to with my set up).
  
• Shared hotbars - I share all Cross-hotbars across classes except 1,2 and 4. 1 and 2 are the main battle hotbar's so need to be class independant. Half of 4 is used for class independent situational skills and macros, and the other half is reserved for PVP skills.
  
  Hotbar 3, as mentioned above is potions. The others are chocobo battle companion commands, mount's, minions, menu's, emotes and other un-noteworthy junk.

I don't have the cool macro of switching cleric stance on so the hotbar would change with it.
The only macro I use is the Raise notification and Mage's Ballad request.

I personally like to do everything manually which is why I don't use macros very much ^^;

The only suggestion I would give you is to use one vertical hotbar and put all you cooldowns + cure 2 so you'll notice more easily when cure 2 procs or when divine seal can be used again. Though I'm not sure if you can do that on ps3/ps4...

Thanks for taking the time to share those screenshots Minipapaya! ^^ It's amazing how differently we have set things up O_O I'm sure there are no two players with the exact same.

It's pretty cool that you don't ever have to fully switch hotbars, as you're just using one main hot-bar and then the temporary L2+R2 bars. I'd never dreamed someone would have all their skills on 32 slots, when I struggle to cram all mine into 48!! It goes to show I guess that there's plenty I can afford to ditch as new skills are introduced to the game.

I'd love to have a standard hot-bar to monitor skill cooldowns or procs like you suggest, but unfortunately I don't think it's possible for PS3 :/ I haven't found a way.

Like you I stick to only 2 bars. One for Heals (my run hotbar) and one for myself (out and about) :)
I'm on PS4 (migrated from the PS3) and actually fully revamped my hotbars at that time (from 4 to 2) as by then I knew what i needed and what my pain points were on the old set up (random inappropriate spells cast at bizarre momments; good for lolz in dungeons, not good in a SR! Haha!)

Heals
This contains all heals, CureI-III, Medica I-II, Regen, Benidiction, Raise. Also appropriate buffs: Divine Seal, Shroud, Swiftcast, Eye4Eye....and of course, Stoneskin and Protect.

General
It has Stone I-II, Aero I-II, Repose, Fluid, Virus. It also contains Cure I and II in the exact same slot in both bars - as with Protect and Stoneskin. The basics always have the same place :)

I do have a 3rd bar which I turn off and on, which contains all my randoms, like my mount, links to food and potions - only activated when appropriate.

You both raise a good point about it being preferable for skills that appear on multiple sets to use the same slot on each. I do the same but didn't really mention in the top post.

I can see the advantage to having vital heals like cure I and II slotted on both sets, and I used to do the same, but as I picked up more skills and started running short on slots I decided instead to try to make set 2 (my healing set) include every single skill I could possibly need in a boss fight (with the exception of raise which i decided to put on R2 > L2). In other words, I don't mind switching sets for solo play, and trash mobs where the stress is lower, but I tried to make it so that I don't actually have to switch hotbars at all in those tense situations like a boss fight. The only thing I've found recently is that I tend to switch to set1 for Virus quite often in boss fights, so I may consider moving that to set2 (or possibly the additional bars when pressing L2 and R2 together).

Furthermore, ever since separating the healing and attack skills entirely, and using the /chotbar change macro on Cleric stance, I've found it much less likely that I'll be healing in the wrong stance. This was a big issue for me before, and too often I'd notice too late that I was in the wrong stance - now each stance is kind of tied to each cross-hotbar, so I simply don't have a heal while I'm in Cleric Stance. This forces me to switch sets and therefore switch to the correct stance as a result (because I'm generally switching sets using the Cleric Stance macro's rather than R1). Also, because the /chobar change macro's use the Cleric Stance icon, I'm more conscious of which stance I'm in and whether there's a cooldown to wait for before I can switch Cleric off. The downside is that when I do decide to switch with R1 (like I often do to Virus, or to Esuna from the "other" set) I have to make sure to R1 back at some point, otherwise I'll be stuck in the wrong stance constantly. If I could only specify in the macro for each button to /ac "Cleric Stance" ON or /ac "Cleric Stance" OFF...

I have 4 crossbars 1. non battle only toggles with my weap sheathed. 2. heals 3. dps, 4. buffs/defuffs w/sprint in the same spot on all.

My 4th Hotbar is Right bumper and A, and after I buff everyone, I ALWAYS REMEMBER to tap the Right bumper to cycle me back to my heals.

My buff hotbar used to be jammed packed with cool things But after accidentally hitting a macro to put stone on all 8 party members and your in a 4 man duty...and/or accidentally wasting potions, food, or casting an early heal on the tank and his nicely hearded room of 1000 mobs hates me instead. LOL I took everything off "main" side except protect. seems to work for me. Seems to work for me..

Since 2.0 came out I've been having issues when camera angles. and Lag or " unresponsive buttons " while I'm actually in the right hotbar.. so I'm picking up a ps4 this weekend :) thx!

Yeah, I did some experimenting with macro's and found it's always better to keep things really simple / flexible. The main macro's I have are to emulate settings options I want the game to have rather than long skill chains. Generally I find any fixed combo to be too limiting when things don't go as anticipated, though I do have a couple handy combo's macro-ed like swiftcast>raise and Fluid aura>sleep>mark (with their standard counterparts slotted too).

Hi scmasta86. Unfortunately I don't have a charater on the Brynhildr server so I can't chat to you in game. There are lots of things to highlight or suggest to new gamepad users to make things more comfortable, but I think to go into detail would be another uber post like the top one. However, some general things you may want to research further on your own are:

• In most cases, x is like left click, square is like right click.
  
• Temporary target - understand there is a temp target (ring in mid point of enemy), and main (full) target (ring on ground below enemy with arrow above it's head). You'll be switched back automatically to your main target after you cast on a temporary target. That caught me out for a while so be sure to press x before casting when you want the temp target to be the main one.
  
• Target filters - by default pressing left / right will cycyle through all target types (players, enemies, npcs, minions, etc) when weapon is sheathed and just enemies / npc's when weapon is drawn. I preferred to turn this setting off and customise the target filters so I can manually choose whether to cycle through enemeies, aggroing enemies, players, etc.
  
• If there are a whole load of targets on screen, like in a fate, sometimes the target filters aren't even enough to help you get your target quickly. Sometimes it's easier to just cancel you current target by mashing circle a few times, then face the target you want and press x to try to make auto target grab it.
  
  note: no matter what, I think all pad users struggle to get their target quickly in big, big fates, so don't feel that you're alone or doing something wrong. Outside of fates however, you should be able to get any target quickly and easily with some setting tweaks and practice.
  
• At level 15 you're probably only using one cross-hotbar for skills (maybe another for potions?) during battle, and all the others are for out of battle stuff like menu shortcuts, minions, mounts, emotes, etc.
  
  When in battle, I find it easier to just toggle through cross-hotbars by tapping R1, rather than trying to remember which hotbar i'm on / i need and pressing the relevant combo (ie R1+circle). There's a setting to choose which cross-hotbar sets you'll toggle through by tapping R1, so you don't have to cycle through all 8 which are useless to you in battle.
  
  note: there's a separate setting for what hotbars will be cycled in battle / out of battle.
  
• L1 + R3 (press down right analogue stick) gives you a virtual mouse. It's handy from time to time but never essential.
  
• Assist (target you target's target) can be assigned to L3 or R3 in system setting > game-pad config (i think).
  
  note: Assist is very useful to find which target the tank is attacking and help him down it. Hitting a target he isn't may draw it to get you instead and cause both you, the tank, and the healer a little stress (you may already know this from playing on Keyboard mouse?).
  
  note: You can also make a macro to assist and slot that on your hotbar, or make a macro for skills to fire through to the targets target without actually changing your target (both these macro's can be found in top post). If you're new to MMO's, just start with assigning assist to L3 in settings.
  
• If you have a keyboard for your PS3, you can go to "Keybind" settings in the menu and turn on / off "enable direct chat". I actually only found this out recently!
  
  With enable direct chat on, you can just start typing and the chat log activates. If it's off you need to press enter to activate the chat log, however you can open all kinds of menu's and do other nice things by pressing the shortcut key (i.e. i for inventory menu, c for character menu.) The latter makes it easier if you want to open several menu's at once.
  
  You can check all the shortcuts or assign your own in the same "Keybind" menu.
  
• Give it time / a chance. Some will always prefer Keyboard and mouse, however once you become familiar with the controls the gamepad surely has it's advantages and is much more comfortable too.

That's all I can think of for now. I hope it helps and is neither too complicated not too obvious. Best thing for me to learn was to go through all the settings for myself and figure out / actually see first hand how they work.

Thank you for posting the screenshots. I am on PS4/PS3. I actually trimmed down my bar to where I only have Aero II, Stone II, and Holy on the bar and don't bother with Cleric Stance. I have already emailed this link to myself. I won't copy it exactly but it has given me inspiration on how I can organize my bars. I rarely use sleep so I will probably have esuna and regen on both bars. I will try and share my screen shots at some point. But I am like you. I like have certain abilities in the same area for consistency. Like Shield Bash and Brutal Swing, I ended up changing my bars so they were in the exact same place.

Thanks Winter! It took ages to list the reasons behind my choices, but I've always preferred when people explain the logic instead of just saying do this or that, so I'm really glad you say it's given you some idea's without just copying. There's a lot of choices that conflict with each other, so I don't think there's any perfect layout, and people play differently of course. For example you say you don't bother with cleric stance?! For me it's pretty essential to do any worthwhile damage,since I have all my points in Mind. Or is it just that you mean you don't bother doing damage a lot in dungeons?

I haven't been able to find another thread on the topic of cross-hotbar slotting before, so have had to grab idea's over time from occasional points made in other topics, and then just think hard about it myself. I'm not sure if that's because people don't see it as important / useful, or maybe because gamepad with cross-hotbars are unique to this game and people aren't confident about sharing their ideas yet, but I've found that with each improvement I'm having to fight the interface / controls less, so I can just "BE" the White Mage XD. What I mean is that I prefer to spend my time deciding what strategic or reactive move I need to be making next, rather than what buttons I need to press.

Well let me explain further. Cleric Stance is preferred and I do prefer it when I do damage but tabbing through cross bars and making sure I am on the right one was getting painful. Also potentially group threatening. I didn't know I could macro to switch Cross bars. So your Cleric Stance Macro will make it ideal. So what I did is cram everything essential onto one crossbar. Basically Presence of Mind , Virus and Eye for an Eye got dropped which in a sense makes me a less effective healer. That was just on the healing side of things. On the dps side I dropped Aero, Stone, and Fluid Aura. I haven't even bothered getting swiftcast yet since I didn't have room for it. This changes a lot of things for me.

Ah, that makes more sense to me now. I had the same issues with accidentally being in the wrong stance, or double switching stance by mistake, so for a long time I often avoided using it a lot too, even if it could have been effective. However I would encourage anyone not to limit their strategic flexibility, and instead to find a way to use the skills more comfortably (whether through re-thinking hotbars / settings or simply practicing with the controls more), as you are.

I also try to never rule out the usefulness of a particular skill. I've found each has great potential in the right situation. People often consider the dungeons to be scripted, and are only interested in playing in that scripted way. As a result they may rule out the effectiveness / purpose of slotting one skill or another. These healers then become frustrated when the tank can't hold hate / tank doesn't cycle targets / DPS pull aggro / DPS AOE when they shouldn't / DPS don't AOE when they should / player wakes sleeping enemies / etc, etc, etc. They believe they should not need to use x skill, because the other party members should be doing x (and I guess they are entitled to think so).

The thing is just because the mobs behaviors are scripted doesn't mean the players are, or need to be. Having a group co-ordinate well is nice and will get you your loot / progress quicker, but I don't play to just progress. Following a single strategy like a drone can become boring, and doesn't give me a sense of achievement. For me the fact that people will make mistakes, or have different play-style preferences makes each encounter real and dynamic, and is the heart of what an MMO is about. Co-ordination is not just about following a leader without error, but adapting to a teams weaknesses and them adapting to yours. Including cross-skills, White Mages in particular have huge flexibility in their choices (healing, damage, crowd control, damage mitigation, stun, slow) allowing them to engage creatively and contribute heavily to chances of success in the endless variety of possible situations. This is why I'm personally against leaving any skills out of reach, and also why I'm against combining skills with a macro (but removing the individual skills) to preserve space. It's difficult to cram everything into a couple cross-hotbars but I think it's worth it if you can.

So I reorganized my bars last night. I found one glitch though and I don't know if it was because I was accidentally hitting R1 or what. I would switch bars manually to do something but then it would auto switch back after I casted one ability. Maybe it was a button combo but it was getting annoying. But once I figure out how to extract photos from my PS4 I will post screenshots.

I have an idea of what this could possibly be. If it's happening after the very first cast it could be that you need to turn off "Enable auto hotbar switching when drawing/sheathing weapon":

It's found in Character configuration > hotbar settings > Cross.

What the setting does is allows you to automatically jump to a specified hotbar each time your weapon is drawn / sheathed (based on which hotbars you selected in the options directly underneath). In my case this was not useful because I had Stoneskin on my second hotbar. Often before a fight I would manually switch to my second hotbar then cast Stoneskin on a player. Casting caused me to draw my weapon of course, which caused that setting to switch me to the first highlighted set in the "Enable customization for when weapon is drawn" setting. Then I had to manually switch back to set 2 again for the next Stoneskin which, as you say, was very annoying.

If this doesn't solve the issue, do you have any macro's currently with the /chotbar change in?

PS4 :) I roll three/four hotbars. My #3 pops when my weapon is away, number 1 weapon drawn, #2 my dual triggers. This works for me since I mostly tank so I just hold RT most of the time and my double pull is kinda my oh shit grip giving me 8 good buttons on my non movement side to put my combos on then i can relax grip to buff in combo. Healing all my macros are just singles with <t> <tt> progressions. Idk if there's a macro for att mark 2,,??

Thanks winter! What I specifically want is this. Tank pulls, I want his non target to pop and mark either cancel sign or #2 so I can sleep or bind withou switching. Kinda asking a lot but if you know how that'd be cool. I've changed all my macros so now I just target tank or target and don't have to switch, marking a bind would just make ir more awesome

This may be a stupid question but is there a reason to have both Stone and Stone II on your hotbar?
The only time I use Stone is if I'm synced down to the point I can't use Stone II.

I've been using:
/micon "Stone II"
/ac "Stone II"<tt>
/ac "Stone II" <t>
/ac "Stone" <tt>
/ac "Stone" <t>

If I am currently synced to a high enough level it casts Stone II, if not Stone I.
It seems to work okay and I don't have to worry about switching up hotbars or wasting slots.

I do the same thing with Cure and Cure II on my solo/fate DPS hotbar since I only really want my big cure when soloing but it will cast Cure I if I am synced down too low.

I haven't really done any hard content yet so maybe it's a bad idea and I haven't gotten to content that would show me why.

I have to say I rarely use Stone in a dungeon where I have Stone II available. I would never rule it out though since it could help for the odd situation - perhaps the tank dies and you want to help the DPS to kite or something. Of course this will be so rare and often a wipe would likely happen in that case anyway, so deciding to save some space and possibly eliminate the need to switch cross-hotbars might be a worthy priority for a lot of players.

Personally, I happen to Stone for solo play quite a bit as my opening move, and I've become comfortable switching with 2 cross-hotbars, but I'd consider your idea for sure if another move or two was added and I needed more space. Another situation might be PVP, but I'm not too experienced in that at the moment.

The Cure, Cure II - I understand it could be useful for a particular play-style like you describe, but would advise for a dungeon of course. I use the same hotbars for solo / dungeon so I don't confuse myself XD but for those who like separate solo / dungeon bars it sounds like an interesting idea.

By the way, I haven't done a much hard content myself either (i'm just up to Titan HM), so this thread is intended as more of an open discussion than a guide :)

When I started WHM many months ago I wanted my bar to be fairly organized and easy to remember. I think I succeeded since I have never had a problem with it. =p Though that is entirely subjective since anyone can memorize whatever setup they have XP

I use the regular hold R1 and hit a button to switch rather than the L2R2 simultaneous pressing, I couldn't get used to it.

I don't use a ton of macros on WHM. The macro in the second image is just a warning for the party that something's happening. For me it feels more reliable to do everything manually. I made macros for quite a few things before, but I couldn't get used to using them.

Stuff regarding self and healing mostly on L2, against enemy targets mostly on R2. I like Holy on the left since I can double holy with swiftcast in a very easy motion. Otherwise Eye for an eye would probably be there.

Well, let me know if you need any help with macros. I love making macros (Pissed off some people since I have macros for just about everything-I have a few macros I'm keeping a secret of how they work though since I don't want SE to nerf macros again ^_^;)

If I target an enemy, I use stone II or stone. Otherwise, I used Divine Seal.
