Bring back Maat with current fight mechanics for level cap increase. There...I said it. *ducks*
Dang, I almost forgot about the old fart. Thanks for the memory trip XD
Maat = Atma
Maybe part of the relic quest eventually?
*mindblown*
i am against this. but to each their own.
As long as he is hard this time!
Maat was always hard for me.
(... Maybe he just wasn't that into you?)
Anyway I hope the added levels will be super tough levels as now we have sll these cool tools like challenge logs, companions, atma farming but the XP is all going to waste because most players are already at 50 and have no use for these diversions.
There are probably quite a few ex-red mages that are shuddering.
RDM Maat was only difficult because it practically forced you to learn a skill-set which wasn't exercised in parties - the ability to solo and survive. RDM was a highly capable soloist with tons of survival tools and Maat was very straightforward, but for many it would've been the first time having to learn to use that particular skill-set.
I hope they never increase the level cap.
Pff.. Laila > Maat
I remember doing Maat as an RDM. Spending a lot of time to get the testimony, getting an elixir, thinking out a strategy. I planned to go in once and just see how badly I die.
I beat it and set a record on the server O.o!
That being said, I did spend a lot of time practicing as a Solo RDM to see what I could do ^^.
Morale of the story: Maat was not that challenging. And I want challenging content!
Bring it back!
I don't think they gimped him when I did him. I did him when there was still a level 75 cap, and before the Corsair/Etc. jobs were released.
I'm not sure if I got lucky or not (he did all the things people said he would do). Maybe I got lucky in the sense that my battle plan was valid and actually succeeded ^.^b
My Maat fight was DRK knight. Essentially a race to 0hp between the two of you.
Prep time : 2.30 (mostly sleeping).
Fight time: <30 secs
My wife's Maat fight was PLD:
Fight time: 3 days (used an exp-item to level midway through for full hp/mp recovery. Cheap, but effective)
Pretty much the same for RNG. You only had to hope that blink got Eagle Eye Shot and that your barrage hit with max shot. That way you could go WS -> Barrage -> Shot -> WS -> Icarus Wing -> WS = Maat gives up. Well could remove some of the steps if you had good gear enough.
How do you bring back something that was never in this game?
What are you talking about OP...
Days of challenging a player to fight a equally skilled NPC in a solo fight is old style archaic method.
I want to log in and relic weapon should drop on my hands.
I remember beating Maats ass on DRK in 20secs it was great.
Wow I made this post a couple of days ago and haven't been back since. Interesting to see ppl wouldn't mind having a solo skill challenge like Maat makes its way into ARR. I understand that some ppl got him easy, but for me, was definitely a roadblock for a couple of weeks or so. One of my most memorable feelings of gratification in gaming came from that fight. I miss it and want it back, but still enjoying my new home in ARR since launch and will for many years to come.
I don't know...I think there's still some Red Mages in counseling thanks to that old fart.
I beat him as a dragoon. :D So Maat didn't know what hit him. Jump-> Hight Jump -> Penta thrust -> two hour -> Jump -> High Jump -> Penta thrust = Maat dead.
My dragoon mentor couldn't make it in game so he was on the phone with me during the fight and the linkshell co-leader showed up and gave a yagudo juice to hold for luck (it was the same one she had on her when she beat Maat for the first time).
When I beat Maat I ended up screeching into the phone and my mentor was yelling "WHAT? WHAT?!" I still get excited and teary-eyed thinking about it.
I'd actually had a video of my Maat fight as RDM but it was nothing exciting. I died the first couple of attempts and finally got it.
When folks say "oh it was easy" and others say "oh you got lucky" what they are probably thinking is that you used the Sleep tactic (it's the only tactic I know of for fighting him) and how successful you were at actually landing sleep on him would depend on that "luck" they're talking about, and also how potent your attack spells were (probably Aero IV, if I remember correctly).
Luck would also kick in to determine how frequently he misses you, how infrequently he lands a critical, etc. If your Sleeps all land successfully, your spells all manage to crit, he misses you a lot, etc, and the fight seemed easy, it's because "you got lucky."
Haaaaaaaa... Maybe for WAR, PLD, DRK, RNG, and some other jobs.
Red Mage, on the other hand, I never beat (he can heal, enfeeble, sleep, and nuke you, as well as punch you. Pretty much have to sleep, gravity, nuke with Aero III with the wind elemental staff on windsday, kite, repeat in order to win, and you need very high magic skills for that. RDM was usually delegated to be the refresh mage/haste/off heals/debuffs in parties or be kicked from the group. Capping magic other than healing and enhancing took forever because of it).
Luckily I leveled DNC before I got RDM up, Layla was a pushover in comparison to RDM Maat, even before DNC got native dual wield. And she could heal herself.
*RAISES HAND AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE*
I never beat him on my RDM. If I didn't decide to switch to main DNC before I got RDM to 50 I probably would have quit FFXI because of RDM Maat. I beat Layla (Aht Urghan and WotG jobs don't fight Maat, but it's still a "Maat fight" as in limit break quest) on my second attempt. I tried fighting Maat after I got 75 RDM, I failed miserably. Old coot is a pain for RDM.
the problem with maat is that he was mnk+yourjob , what killed most mages wasnt the nukes, was the WS that hitlike a truck (taru HP :( )
took me like 5 tries to finish Rdm maat >< , the hardest no doubt , is one of that things u still remember years later , because it was challenging ^^
I kinda hope there's some system in place to break the level cap from 50 > 51, but that might go against the casual grain of this game. It doesn't need to be anything time consuming like Atma or anything (looking at you papyrus) but something in a group environment would be nice. Either a full party or full alliance (since we should have the ability to preform these by 3.0) would be cool. Either that or a very challenging solo fight.
Originally he was hard, for the large majority of Jobs in XI.
I remember the first time I did mine as a Dark Knight. I read up on what I needed to do, the strategy used for beating him and did it as best I could. I beat him, but it was still a close fight. I was so happy that I did it my hands were actually shaking as I proclaimed in /tell to another Drk friend I had asked for info from about the fight. That was a good memory, so thanks for reminding me of it. Good times!
