Wait, How did they get that far with a zenith...
Holy **** It happend FINALLY!
Nael is finally Unmasked and SE manage to create a 2.0 version of 1.0 fight!
The 1.0 players will be real excited.
I think I need a towel.
That snowman outfit. Just. lol.
That boss looks too much like Astaroth of Pandemonium from FF2.
Anyone wanna place bets on Louisoix taking the form of Beelzebub or Tiamat when we end up kicking his ass?
As for that T9 fight... uh... let me go get through Coils 1, beat Twin a few times, gear up, skill up and we'll talk. Haha
Wow, I was going to say that's quite the twist until I read on.
Because I could have sworn that Nael had a male's voice through 1.0 unless he just wasn't voiced at all. They made no mistake in making livia female in body as well, so I was a tad confused. Then I realized, like in dragon age, Nael's physical form is merely a manifestation of something from the void.
So as it is, that is Nael, sort of, just possessed by something or someone similar.
Well, to be fair
The thing "she" becomes does look a lot like a succubus (disappointing IMO), so I guess that could explain the whole female thing if he was possessed or w/e. Or, maybe it was a woman all along since we never did see his/her face, and the male voice was a result of some Garlean technology within the helmet.
There's also a matter of Bradamante, which he was supposed to have named after a warrior maiden he killed. Perhaps he never "killed" her at all, and merely took on a new identity for whatever reason.
@murakumomellennium
INTERESTING. Yes that would be fascinating but very unfortunate to be learning about far after his/her death. Although Alisae does mention that not much of Nael exists, but the succubus could be taking on a modicum of his likeness. The third eye, for example. Though if the maiden were Nael (and she killed him instead, she taking on his persona), that'd be wicked.
EXCEPT
The figure clearly says "In the hour of his failure, Nael van Darnus felt the currents of the aether.... -- A divine will reached out. And thus I was born." So it could be argued that Nael van Darnus was a male of Garlean descent, and was taken over by a succubus like creature.
OR
She's an ascian.
I did see that, and thought something similar to what you said. Also that perhaps what they're inhabiting is merely a shadow of the very last thing Dalamud saw, in appearance at least. And what's inside is more of the 'deus' that its labelled as.
Also you actually bring up a good point about the nameand begs the question if we'll see that naming convention again in later turns.Nael DEUS Darnus
edit: Having just read up on the naming conventions, the above actually makes sense.
I'll clear some things up here with my 1.0 knowledge
Neal was a he. The new Neal even refers to the previous incarnation as a HE several times. It's simply a persona of Neal in a new form. Also note that she said she was "born" after his death.
Also,
In 1.0 once you beat Neal Van Darnus, you get a cutscene where his name changes to Neal Deus Darnus as get gets infused with the power of Bahamut (then you fight him again). The "Deus" is a representation of that
At T9 already and they don't even have their Atma Weapons? Also a gamoured snowman outfit... how original, I'm sure NO-ONE thought of that ;)
How Nael turned in woman :O i all this time was sure he is a Men lol (ofc 1.0 player may remember hes strange "Hildibrand" moves but stilll...)
Actually it is revealed at the end of T9 cutscene before leaving Coil 2 story wise...
Nael is Female since Nael returns to her normal self after her defeat because Bahamut has no more use for her thus Nael is no long under Bahamut's influence. Nael most likely is one of those characters that hid her gender when she joined the Military. Her Helmet most likely had a voice changer in it that allowed her to keep her voice as a male so no one would suspect her as a Female in the Garlean Army.
Yes but at the end of T9 after defeating her..
He will appear and reveal he is now under Bahamut's influence and will even hint that he will attempt to stop you personally from ruining Bahamut's ressurection if you continue to do so which is most likely a hint he will be the final boss for Coil 3.
Since all the events of Coil Storyline is meant to serve as a Side-story explaining what lead to Bahamut's return for his Main Story Scenario Arc we may get full answers once Coil Story Ends and starts to converge into the Main Story Scenario Quests. Of course by then Coil will need to be replaced by a new Endgame Dungeon.
Can we just take a moment to recognize that the transformation is very similar to Dart's from Legend of Dragoon? That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the pic on BG's website, and the video makes me think the similarity is intentional.
RIP Frosty the detective

Does the boss have eye lasers, electric wind god fist, and just frame laser scraper?
Interesting. As to the gear, well there is the glamour system, as well as the ability to replay cutscenes from your inn room in whatever gear you feel like wearing at the time of course.
Nael Van Darnus is...white of hair?!
Seriously... this scene, this fight, is the reason why I do Coil. I don't need any loot. Let me settle matters with Nael.
Also, no surprise Nael had long silver hair, not after that scene with 'him' walking through the fire.
Being Female... well that just makes Lin fighting her all the more special. Duel of the Spearmaidens.
Jenova Cells. Explains everything.
Oooh boy, I'm surprised the Loremasters haven't posted about this yet - they'll have a field day over this. :p
Personally though, I'm not convinced this is really is Nael at all - the last anyone saw of him in 1.0 was his body disintegrating into aether and flowing up into the sky to Dalamud - hence, whose to say this 'Nael' is just an 'aetheric entity' that has taken a loose form which is not 100% 'correct'? 'She', could be the same thing as Good King Moggle Mog the XIIth - aether given form and substance based on a desire or memory.
Not to mention Nael's official SE bio on the main FFXIV website has long stated Nael as male, and the kicker, the lyrics for Nael's final boss theme Rise of the White Raven, refers to him in the male tense (when translated into English from Latin). So, is that all just a retcon, or has SE decided to have a laugh at the players' expense by throwing all that away to instead pull a rule 63? I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Not to mention it's not the first time...remember Faris in FFV?
During the 1.23 fight, doesn't his personality change somewhat when he becomes Nael Deus Darnus?
Ah, must have missed your post somehow.

I went and checked the video. Start at 19:00 to 20:30 of the first link, and you can see the name change.
Funny thing about Bios.
Bios about characters are usually based on what is commonly known in the game by the majority NPCs. All NPCs have always known Nael as a Male so the bio is based on the NPCs knowledge about the character. However, the real bio of a character is usually secretly kept to the developers themselves so it is up to them to follow a common bio known to all NPCs in the game or pull a plot twist and reveal a piece of the character's real Biology through lore and story events like how they revealed Nael is actually Female.
This isn't the first time I've seen developers pull this gender bender stunt.
