This thing needs to be signal-boosted, imo. Make them have to turn it into an actual thing from a joke. Because, seriously, like, let's be honest: shouldn't something like this be part of a roleplaying game?

it's not THAT kind of role-play.

by role play game they mean a specific role like I.E., damage, healer, tank and etc.

The whole group role thing came much later. EQ was based off D&D... tabletop RPG. Role-Play because you took on the role of your character =-)

If this were real I would wait outside the conjurers guild/vesper bay to silently judge people trying to win favour with Sylphie/Maria.

there are at least three different ways to use the term 'role play'. there is role play like in MMORPG. there is roleplaying like the actual intricateness of what you do with your character in the game, like in the story you have a certain role. and then there is role-playing/role-play like you would do in real life.

there are even still yet more uses for the term 'role play'.


but in the case of MMORPG... it refers to your role like as a healer or damage or tank role.

Back in the day there used to be people that would take over the actions of some NPCs for special event quests. They were NPCs, even though they were human controlled, because they weren't "players".

I know it's strange for newer players who separate "RP" from the general game. But EQ actually had a separate channel called "OOC" (Out of Character) chat. Because all the other regular talking came from your character... this was disabled on RP only servers.

exactly my point. but again when it comes to the specific term of MMORPG. again... it is referring to the role you play. like as in damage, healer or tank.



i've been playing since a long time in MMORPG's. i remember early graphical MUDs like Habitat. and early MMORPG's like Meridian 59, The Realm Online, Ultima Online, EverQest and Runescape. so yeah... i promise i am quite familiar with the term 'role play' and it's many uses.

You are literally the only person in my time on this planet and in MMORPGs, I have seen, that has defined the roleplaying aspect of an MMORPG, as your role as tank,dps,healer, etc. I had to force that to make sense to me.

Final Fantasy, the first one, was an RPG. You didn't have class roles that needed to be adhered to. If I made a party of nothing but fighters would it be a Fighter Playing Game? You take on the role of the heroes of light, not what class they are. XIV, an MMORPG, follows the exact same vein. You take on the role of a so called, "Hero of Light," to save the world or something.

Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG yet it has no defined roles. So is it not an MMORPG? Literally every MMORPG I've played has put you, the player, in the role of your character, to take part in a predetermined story, or to create your own story. You create a sort of different self and live another life in a different world. Some people take it more seriously than others, but that's what it is.

You're taking the word "Role" and twisting it to fit your own definition. So should we call XIV, a Massively Multiplayer Online, Pick Dps, Healer, or Tank, Playing Game? I do love me some MMOPDHTPG's. Because if we don't differentiate it somehow. Battlefield is an RPG.

Maybe I should ask my girlfriend if she's up for some role play. Then punch her in the face and tell her I picked DPS. (Remember kids, domestic violence is not funny)
