Its not really a big deal.
I think it's because there was a post from the reps about it a while back, so most people on the forums probably already knew.
Talk to an NPC or Fall asleep midcraft AND now standing around staring at stars all equal staying logged in. :)
Now I can go lie down on my bed (and maybe fall asleep), while my craft macro is halfway running!
Actually, I read it in the patch notes, so I noticed it. And someone else mentioned it at least twice in the Patch Notes thread, and others in another thread. So other people did see it. :P
And no, it's not a big deal since the servers are more stable. It'll just make your PC run hot for a longer time and lessen the lifetime of your PS3 if you stay logged in constantly. So it's that person's loss if they want to AFK for hours.
Whats even more amazing is who/what were fighting for final turn of coil. Cant tell but might fight another version of Ultima Weapon or something close to it.
Long as the servers can handle it this time...
...
I kinda think this is bad timing. Maybe would have been better a week or two after this big patch that's likely to bring back over crowding from half the player base returning... I think we're going to see a tonne of errors and long login queues if everyone takes advantage of this over the next week, regardless of previous and currently being implemented improvements.
Greetings,
With the elimination of the automatic logout feature in patch 2.2, we've been seeing comments that it can be difficult to tell who is AFK and who is ready for action. There have also been requests for a feature that will automatically place the away icon next to your character after a set amount of time, and Hiroshi Minagawa has an update about this feature.
Great to know that it has been removed, and it's also great to know that they are working on that "Away" feature. :)
I still log out when I'm done playing. I don't see the need to add anymore undue stress to my PC (or my electric bill) while I'm not actually at my PC.
I still wish I could just type /afk and have it be set rather than have to dig into a menu for it.......
I use this command every day. Actually considering making a macro: /cpose motion /cpose motion /afk
Definitely don't have to dig around in menus for it... o.o?
Edit:
Just tried making that macro just now but can't figure out how to set the icon to the change pose icon. Does anyone know? "/micon "Change Pose"" doesn't work :(
While I appreciate the gesture of removing the automatic logout, I get 90k'ed now way before that logout would have ever started almost every single time...
instead of an icon, why not use a sleep emote to indicate this instead, more immersive.
I like this feature, especially for my weekend gaming, where I frequently afk to go do housework or other fabulous exciting things, and just lile being able to nosy through chat logs when I get back :D
As for wasting power, my pc is on all day anyway for music, so no biggy there.
Then those were added at some point well after launch, because at launch, those commands didnt exist/work. It was frustrating because I kept typing it and then coming back and realziing the flag had never been set.
Thanks for the info that they work..... now that I've broken my habit of using them.... :p
I often go afk at unspoiled nodes, do something else for an hour, and come back to the same unspoiled node. I used to move my character every so often to prevent logout, which was just plain annoying, so I love this feature.
well, if everybody would have read all patch notes and notices, this post wont even exist xD
Greetings,
As a follow-up to this, in patch 2.28 we will be making adjustments to the “Away” status so that when you do not operate the game for a certain amount of time, your online status will automatically be set to “Away.” You’ll be able to select from four different time settings (5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and 60 minutes) or you can also choose not to use this feature. The “Away” status will automatically be removed once you operate the game in some way.
I'm not sure why people stay logged in anyways. As far as I know you don't even have to re-enter your password or anything, just click on your character. There's no benefits to staying logged in, it just kills your hardware faster. It's not 2.0 where if you log out, you'll never be getting back in.
It seems to be a holdover from something people did in FFXI. Lots of people like to apparently leave their character logged in 24/7, so they don't miss anything and can review what happened in chat/tells whenever they get back. I don't really see the point either.
Though I do not do it overnight or when I leave my apartment...when I'm around home I will stay logged in just for the background noise of Lavender Beds to echo throughout my home. It's kind of nice, as I am not a city person and grew up in a quiet place in a farm town. Unfortunately for my job, I am forced to be in a city environment for the time being. This is the reason I like to leave my character afk sometimes when I'm doing other things.
That, and if I'm needed by LS / FC friends, they can just /tell me and I'll be right there ready to go for them.
I was very happy about this! I afk for about 20 hours a day, only logging out for maintenance.
Allowing people to not use this feature will just put us in the same boat we're currently in :( Everyone's just going to set it to never be away.
You don't get it, just as much as the last one, it was not about reading chat ya it was a SAMLL part of it but NOT the big pic.. it was for player shops -_- we line up all over and sold crap from our inv. Seem to me your both not X-FFXi player or you know this -_-' so ya your right you don't get it.. bc you dont even know WHY we do it =^-^=
I think they are giving this option just so those who may feel uncomfortable with it as if this is always on.. people can track when you on there and not.. even stalking... This is just a example..
as for me.. I have no problem with people seeing when I am at my keyboard or not with this.
It's a bad habit some people get from other MMOs.
I have it too, I know it's useless, I know people will talk to me and say "oh he's afk, why's he online then?".
I just don't think about it when I leave the PC...a bad habit from other MMOs where you have either long queues or it's in your best interest to stay online etc.
i'm most ly only then logged in when i lay down a bit and fall alseep (sitting 5 1/2h for raiding is quite uncomfortable after a while) or when i be short at the store buying something.
So i like that little change. it's then more clearly who is afk and who not. Maybe we see it also then via a Chat-Tag aswell who is afk.
I'm kind of surprised that you say this, given that (at this moment) your character avatar is wearing a mining helmet.
My primary reason for leaving myself logged in without doing anything for long stretches of time, is because I'm mining a specific unspoiled node. They can only be mined once per hour, and shutting down the system and turning it on again every hour is arguably more damaging to the hardware than just letting it run (not to mention the whole login process is kind of a nuisance). So, I'll place myself near where the nodes pop and then do other stuff around the house, returning only to mine a node and then leaving again.
Another reason folks would be logged in for long periods of time are if they are waiting for specific infrequently spawning FATEs for their Atma book. They'll plop themselves down in the appropriate spot and then wait sometimes as long as six hours for the FATE to spawn. They could spend this time farming other FATEs, but a lot of the time there's little point to that, so might as well clean up around the house or whatever.
There's probably a host of other good reasons to be logged in but not doing much, but these are two examples off the top of my head.
