[DEV] Onion Gear. Why?

Just curious why the hell we have Onion Gear? They are not very fashionable though they are a very specific set. Why is it that when we have all Onion Gear equipped that we get nothing special? And if something ever does get put into place, what might it be? Maybe only people fully equipped with Onion Gear can ride chocobos? I doubt it but I am at a loss to what it could be.

Actually it kinda does, This is important because other full set gear will come out and what use will there be to collect them all besides fashion? BTW don't be a D**K.

Forum drinking game:

maybe SE just thought it's more fun to make ppl work for it and obtain it from faction leves, rather then starting with it.

Ya but the helm offers decreased time to wait after death. I know that this was a pretty big topic back when the forums started, just never got resolved, I am curious if we can get an answer now.

well the onion head was a CE bonus, so it had to deliver some use at that, not just looks.

There was alot of speculation on YG and ZAM regarding the set as a possible hidden effect when all is equipped. But ya the helm delivered half time on recovery after KO. Question is, if that had a hidden effect, why bother putting the other Onion Gear in the game, let alone as rewards for Faction Leves? Perhaps the original Dev team had plans for the gear and the plans got scrapped when the new team took over.

If i remember the lore around the onion helm, it was part of a set of equipment that in by gone times was given to people heading out for a life of adventuring. the rest of the set is well by that logic the rest of the set.

I think it might be a reference to the 'Onion Weapons' that new adventurers started with in FFXI. Probably more a nostalgia thing than anything practical.

I think what the OP is trying to get at, is that he is confused as to why such an iconic set of gear was turned into a subpar leveling set with nothing even remotely special about it. You would expect something like it to be in an endgame dungeon (Raid) or drop from incredibly powerful NMs.

You forgot "Take a shot whenever the topic mentions jumping."

The onion gear is a good set for ranking up 1-15 regardless of class. It has a well-rounded distribution of stats so that any job you pick can benefit at that low of a level. It makes sense to have one set of gear for this than to go out and buy Hempen sets for each time you switch classes.

That said, ranking up 1-15 on each class takes about 2 hours per class, so after that the gear is useless unless you like the aesthetic.

Now, if SE would implement a cosmetic equipment selection, I'd break out the onion gear again fo sho. It looks damn good on my bearded lalafell.

The gear is just to prepare people.

At some point they will release onion hands, which will make people more curious...

After several years FFXIV will introduce the quest for the Onion Sword, thus unlocking the Onion Knight (class) and people will start going insane leveling it. (It will be FFXIV's version of the Maat Cap)

This actually sounds like logical reasoning. Also what is strange is that obtaining these gear pieces are through r20 faction leves. and at r20 Glad recieves the ability Onion Cut.

Perhaps if a R20 Gladiator in full Onion Gear uses Onion Cut on a wild Onion...

Onion gear is the official RMT gear set.

Onion equipment is always looked at in a more comical/nostalgic sense than anything. Sometimes being the most powerful gear in the game (FF3 DS version), or the Lulu's most powerful weapon in an ironic sense. Onion gear is always looked at as the beginners gear. Even FFXI has items like Onion Sword, which was your default weapon as a Warrior. I think for FFXIV, it is more of a kicks and giggles type of thing, the helmet itself having nice features on it for beginners.

Before the massive SP boost to rank 1-24, onion gear had alot more use to it.

It is basically the best starting set in the game... now since the start of game is only hours long... yea it is basically worthless now.

Haha Yeah I have seen quite a lot of RMTs not only wearing the helm but chest piece as well.
