Blah... Why come we can't be evil in this game :/ ((Storyline wise))

It's not that type of game in the tl;dr version.

Like FFXI there will no doubt be quests and whatnot that affects how NPCs "see" you in the world versus if you choose to completely ignore them. XIV's story and limited lore so far seems to follow we're still trying to make a name for ourselves, so we can't have good vs evil choices yet since we're still pretty much nobodies with a special ability.

It really depends on what they do with the beastmen tribes, since they're generally seen as the 'evil' ones and us (players) are seen as a 'good' ones. Who knows what the story in the future will spin towards but it would be a bit...weird to let us be good or evil when the overall theme isn't that type of storyline, thus far.

To OP's point, I don't think I've ever played a MMO that quite captured the thrill of taking the sword to the townsfolk the way that Everquest did.(didn't play WOW, btw, so I'm not certain of that one.) Are there other games that try to duplicate this?

Hmmm.... Not sure about that one... only mmorpgs I really played was FFXI, AOC & now this game :). But I don't think WoW had a system like this... Just PvP faction vs Faction... *yawn*

I'm thinking you want the storyline to spin more towards the western archetype since it seems to be more prominent in western RPGs lately.

Since in FF games there's always been good and evil and the players are always on the side of good. Saving the world get's boring, yet even in good vs evil games there's still a greater evil you're fighting against or the outcome is generally the same.

UO did it. Kill enough PCs (or NPCs) and you could end up with a permanent red flag. Basically, anyone could kill you any time without any penalty to their character and NPC town guards would teleport to you and start hacking on you the moment you stepped within town boundaries.

FFXI's storyline already made you the bad guy (with good intentions though) I can see this game doing the same.

I wish i could be evil in this game, I would kill them silly green flying rat things and then the woman from the main storyline quest. Next would be my companion and the NPC repair guy for not repairing my gear to 100%

Playing an evil character in a game without permadeath is pointless. When there is no possibility of lasting repercussions for your actions, it destroys the sense of danger and excitement. Ever done something that would get you in tons of trouble if you were caught? Just like that, the thrill is half the fun.

Also...in FF, you're always playing for the good team, as others have mentioned.

This is an MMO, not a single-player game.

Yet thus far we don't see much conflict in this game. We hear about it, maybe a few quests detailing it, but overall I don't feel like I have a goal in this game to end conflict.. kinda just doing leves. kinda feels empy. this sucks lol

Yep this is an FF game, we kill rats and squirrels then watch the real action in cut scenes.

This is not wow this is not base of PVP so why do we need this? not trying to be rude but this is a pointless topic we all know Final Fantasy XI / XIV is not about PVP is about PVE.

WTF? We are talking about been evil in the story line not killing players. The topic gives it away abit.

Because Final Fantasy has always been about joining together and fighting a greater evil, yadda yadda yadda. Of course in terms of narrative that I won't get into for spoilers, you may see something similar to this idea.

For me personally though, I'm not usually able to "immerse myself" into a game with a flimsy binomial mo system like your Mass Effects and whatnot. Sure, I love the gameplay in those games, but I've never been a fan of decision making outside of something like Deus Ex.

I remember being the evil guy in FF IV, and I didn't like it, because I felt so..bad.
I like saving the world, so I'm fine with the current role the player has in FF XIV :)

Right now, we are just being introduced to this world. Maybe we can start saving it with the first big version update
(not talking about the fixes they are making atm).

Yep, which is all you did since 1980s, that's all they're made of, rats and squirrel extermination and the occasional action oriented cut scene.

It would be nice to see where the persecution of those with the gift comes from. more interesting still if its we the players that get involved, and not some "NPC evil counterpart" of us with the gift.

I think that what would be a good idea towards this is to have faction based quests. The basic idea is that you take quests from evil NPCs and that starts giving you a reputation among that faction, which in turn gives you new quests. Though your choice to follow an evil path makes it so that NPCs from rivaling factions dislike you and won't give you quests. Along with that you will gain a bit of reputation with allied factions and soon you can branch out to support a side that could be either good or evil through your faction selection. It wouldn't change the main story line but I think if the implemented it right it would be even more open and rewarding than just letting you pick good option or bad option in the story line. (that plus you would get quest equipment you want as people playing good guys want hero armor, and people playing bad guys want villain armor)

I'm still surprised the marmot population survived the first week after release.

Because then SE would have to make 2 storylines for the main story...which would only result in 2 half baked storylines, rather than one well done storyline.

Pretty much like all the western RPGs(don't get me wrong I like most of them), but the story is always half baked cause the devs give you the "freedom" to choose many different paths, which is a nice thing to be more individual...but the different paths are always only half as good as a really well focused main story for one specific path could be.

Because only very few Western RPG really give you the choice of good and evil. Fake choice like Bioware's is not real, evil Bhaalspawn will still kills the bad guy whoever it is include his half-brother and his half-sister plus some random elf sorceror; evil Jedi/Sith Lord still kills the other evil Sith Lord and the Republic was saved; bad Shepard still kills the Reapers and save Humanity; bad Grey Warden still fights the Horde. IMO only Troika and Obsidian games really give you choices like Arcanum, Vampires the Masquerade: Bloodlines and Fallout New Vegas, you get the choice of working for whoever you like or even yourself, destroy the world or die trying.

For MMO, I think EVE give you the choice of playing evil. If scam isn't evil, I don't know what is.

Those goats and marmots man, really must be doing something bad since they're the killable mobs in about 75% of the game.

Join the Empire? They has airships, cool weapons, and jobs we don't have yet. And possibly rank 90+ accessibility?

Then again they could be good, but seem bad to us.
