New PC not strong enough for the game?

Hello guys!

I got my new PC yesterday and installed final fantasy on it.

However, it runs very sluggishly and very low fps, around 25-30 on lowest settings full HD.

here are the specs:

AMD A4-5300, FM2, 1MB, 3.4 GHz
hyperX 2x4GB DDR3 RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX 750 superclocked 1GB GDDR5

I thought this would run the game better than my laptop with GTX 660M, 2 GB, but it doesnt.
Is the problem the 1GB ram on the GPU? My laptop runs this on high graphics 30-40 FPS.

If I upgrade the graphic card to a GTX 750 Ti 2GB, would it run the game much better?

Another weird thing is that the PC's hdmi port doesnt work... dont know if it's related.

Make sure that ARR us using your discrete GPU and not the integrated graphics chip that came with your processor (since it's an A4). That actually might be the issue.

Also, be mindful of the feature set of the card you chose. You are comparing a 750 against a 660. Yes, they are in different families and should (ideally) have better architecture that makes them faster. However, since you are now at the 50 level for features, you may be cutting that architecture short because of reduced pipelines, bus width, etc. That 750 is the lower power model within that family, and so it has been "cut down" considerably. Note that in some areas, the 660m still has better stats then the 750m--just enough to make it come out on par or just ahead of the 750m when it all gets added up.

So, you want to consider more then just the generation differences between cards (600 series versus 700)--you have to consider the specs like stream processor count, memory architecture (DDR3/DDR5, 64, 128, 192, 256, 392 bit bus width) and how that all impacts throughput. A lot of scaling back on those key features can have a profound impact on the fill rate, reducing the card's potential. You could see a significant change by moving to a 760 model because you are removing more of that bottleneck. If you stick with that card, you may find yourself scaling back some graphics settings to get more FPS out of the 750. May want to put the graphics cards settings all on Application Control or Performance settings to remove any extra strain on the card and also to make sure your in-game settings actually have a chance at taking effect when applied.

Your GPU isn't too bad but your CPU is holding you back, but as it's an FM1 socket motherboard you're limited to what you can upgrade to without changing the board itself.

I suggest upgrading to an HD 7870 and changing your Mobo and CPU to lift the bottlenecks, even a cheap M5A97 and an FX-6300 will be a massive improvement over what you're currently using.

Shouldnt the game still run as good as the benchmark shows?

I dont know any way to change this. I cant change the used GPU within game settings nor is there an option in nvidia control panel

Go to your Nvidia control panel -> Manage 3D settings -> Program Settings -> You should be able to add/see ARR under here; make sure it's using your GTX 750. If not, then under "Manage 3D settings", there should be an option to force the Nvidia GPU for all applications.

There's no such option. I know where to do it on my laptop because there's the option, but it doesnt exist in this.

750 is definitely not strong enough for 1920x1080 @ 60fps. If I were you, I'd either run the game at 1280x720 on High or 1920x1080 on Low or limit the FPS to 30.

I learned that the game only utilizes 15-20% of the GPU:s power. That's why it runs so slow. I dont know how to change that though.

If you checked my benchmark, you'd see that the avarage FPS is 47 and it should be able to run it at high(desktop) graphics.

I just benchmarked my laptop with GTX 660M and this is the result.

GTX 660M got 3441 points and GTX 750 SC, 1 GB got 5300. There is just no explanation to why this wouldnt run the game any better. I just need to figure out how to make the game use the dedicated graphics. Either that or make it utilize it at 100%. The GPU monitoring program I linked earlier shows that the game doesnt use the GPU for anything really.

The CPU in your Laptop is easily 5-6x better than what you have in your Desktop system hence slightly better performance where-as your other system suffers from a weaker CPU but better GPU in which it's being held back by the CPU.

Also just because FFXIV doesn't utilize 100% of the GPU doesn't mean it's not working properly, my HD 7950 for example only has between 65-70% of its power utilized while playing but it's still a comfortable 55-60fps

Ok, if I upgraded to this: "AMD Athlon II X4 760K Black Edition, 3,8Ghz, FM2, 100W" Would it help at all?

Edit: I still dont understand how it nerfs the benchmark though.

EDIT: Installed secret world on this pc and it runs on full HD, high graphics, 30+fps
The graphic card is running the game, unlike final fantasy

The thing is that my GPU doesnt heat up at all when I'm in FFXIV, the game doesnt put ANY strain on the GPU. When I for example tried secret world (even worked on ultra graphics) the GPU temperature went 20C up from idle state. The power usage was up to 60-80% whereas during playing FFXIV it shows 10-20%, which is the same as during idle state like being on the desktop. PLEASE HELP ME!

That would be a great improvement over your current CPU but that's an FM2 socket which requires a different motherboard unless you're ok with that.

It definitely sounds like it's reverting to the integrated GPU instead for some reason, I'm assuming you have the HDMI connected to the GTX 750 and not the HDMI port on the Motherboards rear I/O panel?

I can't think of why it wouldn't be using the dedicated GPU as usually when you add a separate GPU to an APU system the CPU automatically disables the on-board GPU.

As for disabling the on-die GPU, it should be assignable from within Windows via the nVidia driver settings. Wonder if maybe because the system is defaulting to the AMD, it isn't coming up properly. After a little googling, found out the A4-5xxx series do not play nice with dual graphics setups. You may be able to go into your motherboard BIOS and change the default graphics card that is used, if not flat out disable the on-board completely.

I understand that...why I linked to specs for both PC and Laptop hardware to try to demonstrate the loss you suffer when you use a castrated version of a card, even if you are moving to a newer family of GPU's. Didn't expect to find a direct comparison between a 2+ year old laptop GPU and a just released desktop GPU, so didn't bother trying. You mentioned considering moving to a 750 Ti for increased performance--which may sorely disappoint you because you are staying in the same class of card. Each family has cards designed/intended for different uses. One end is more for casual use, uses less power, and typically costs less. You have a low power version of the 700 series, and thus is going to be on the lower side of the scores for that family of cards and you may need to adjust your expectations a bit. The low end OEM 192-bit 760 card is a 130W, while Retail 256-bit is rated 170W. With a card (and possibly the system as a whole) designed more towards the HTPC market, you may find yourself needing to scale back graphics settings as a trade off to get the higher frame rates with that card.

And that benchmark is static, standalone content. It also measures load times as part of the score--it isn't designed to measure rendering during online game play. So it isn't the best comparison to make against the live online environment. I scored 5382 on an old C2D system with an ATI 4850 and only 4GB of DDR2 memory--a system thrown together 5 years agoe, with some components dating back to 2006. By notching quality down to Standard Desktop, I was able to hit 6620 on that same system. But it didn't fair nearly as well as expected when I went live--got about half the frame rate (the benchmark does track your frame rate, but even that is misleading unless you watch it closely AND look at the end result details). During the benchmark, your system isn't also dealing with exchanging all that web traffic that contains things like other custom character data and their actions. It isn't dealing with all those online dynamics like increased character count, delayed server responses that dictate rendering of character actions and such--probably doesn't even load the entire zones like it does in-game. The live play environment is simply stressing various subsystems much more than the benchmark's "on rails" test. So the offline performance is not indicative of online performance for this game.

Here's something that may prove a little more telling about your processor though... open an elevated command prompt (right-click CMD and run as admin) and run these two commands to get some scores on the CPU from the Windows Experience Index details:
winsat cpu -encryption
winsat cpu -compression

If they aren't returning something around the 250/500 mark or better, your CPU may well be a bit of a bottleneck as well.

I would check the bios settings for the on board graphics. If want to use a discrete graphics card make sure the cpu's graphics is disabled. Also check the motherboard's manual to see where the x16 pci-e is and stick the 750 in it.

That would be an excellent replacement for your current CPU, and overall it will be a very well balanced PC with no bottlenecks. Both 5300 and 760K CPU's are FM2 sockets, so you do not need to replace anything else.

Unfortunately there's no way for me to switch which GPU I want to use either in-game settings or nvidia control panel. Also my dxdiag doesnt see that I have an integrated GPU. I found that every other game works fine and uses the gtx 750 except FFXIV.

Even with all the answers I have got, the fact still remains that all games run better on this than my laptop with i7-3630Q and GTX 660M. ALL except final fantasy. Secret world even requires better rig than FFXIV and it wors fine on ultra graphics on this PC. Someone explain this to me. Secret world recommends and i5 proc with 3.00 GHz while FFXIV requires i5 with 2.66 GHz. THIS means that the problem isnt the processor. The problem is that FFXIV doesnt use the GPU at all.

So you dont think that if this PC setup runs every game better than my laptop, then shouldnt it also run FFXIV better?

While SE's recommendations/ requirements aren't as intensive, FFXIV (currently) uses the CPU a lot more relative to the GPU than most games. I have FFXIV set up on 2 different PCs. One using a 560Ti with an i7 2600k, and another using a 550Ti and i5 3330. Both systems run the game well enough, though the first is obviously much better. The system with the 550Ti has no framerate issues with a few effects toned down @1920x1080. It's just because the Intel chip doesn't bottleneck anything. The game is very easy on a graphics card, but your processor has to be pretty decent. This might change a bit when they release the dx11 client, but that won't be for a while still.

AMD A4-5300 specs:

That's an office grade APU that can barely play movies, not speaking of playing games. But ofc it's SE fault.

well this "office" pc runs secret world on ultra graphics.

2. Monitor plugged into vid card

Run the game in Windowed Mode so you can have the task manager up. Monitor your CPU usage while playing.

What is your CPU usage.

I use the same video output as with other games. My CPU usage in FFXIV is 60-85%, GPU power 5-20%, GPU load about the same. Other games force GPU power to 50-60% and load 60-80%

If you open the Catalyst Control Center for AMD it should allow you to see any usage on the iGPU inside the CPU. If its not using the iGPU at all, which it shouldn't, then compare what kind of CPU usage there us on those other games.

AMD catalyst center is completely empty for me, also the dxdiag doesnt see the integrated gpu, so I think its not maybe plugged in or something, if that's possible. The CPU usage looks the same no matter what game I play, included FFXIV, around 60-85%

You are running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, which means you are relying more heavily on an emulation layer for DirectX 9--so, at the OS level you are going to have a little extra CPU overhead in general because this is currently a DirectX 9 game. Couple that with SE's typical shoddy DirectX implementations (ever play FFXI?)--and it gets compounded further. As others have mentioned, this is a CPU intensive game by design, just from the graphics engine side of things. Couple this with all the extra work it has to do in the background because of the sheer volume of data this game is swapping back and forth, and it puts even more background load on the CPU and memory as well.

Again, you have to compare how the games are designed. The graphics engines are designed very differently. TSW is simply coded to more effectively use DirectX, even at the DX9 level. Not to mention, it already has good DX11 support available--we are talking DX11 tessellation support for heavens sake. While there may also be issues with AA, it does manage AF better as well compared to XIV. This points back to more effective use of the DirectX API, and thus more effective use of your GPU.

That article is about the benchmark they used to test some systems. It draws an interesting contrast across different CPU/GPU's. They found they could actually run the game fine on HD4000 graphics at 1024/768.

That game's engine is simply designed to more properly use the DirectX API, so is better equipped to more fully unlock the potential of your GPU. XIV is only unlocking a small portion of your GPU's power--the GPU components that impact it more at this point of it's development are the number of pipelines, bus width, and bus speeds since a lot of effects are still processed on the CPU. Hopefully a lot of that will change when they complete the move into DX11 support and <hopefully> start to offload more to the GPU.

Oh, and I just googled the system req's for TSW... they aren't as high as you listed them. It can run just fine on 5 or 6 year old hardware--even lists that it supports XP, C2D at 2.6Ghz, 512MB NV 8800 or better, Internet connection of 512Kbps or better:

That's the processor I was able to pull from 5300 to 6600 out of the benchmark with an old 4850 512MB card.Yeah, it's PC grade hardware vs. laptop hardware--but both the CPU and GPU dated back to 2008. The mobile version of that core ran at 2.26GHz and still scored a passmark score of 1464... and it was also released in 2008.

Basically, all this boils down to you having gone from a more gaming class laptop to more an HTPC level PC. That is more likely your problem in general.

Can you run it? Apparently so. Can you run it with all the eye candy turned on and ramped up? Likely not.

I'll just say this again.

Also, it doesn't matter that your GPU usage is 15-20%. That means absolutely NOTHING at all. GPU usage is mostly related to calculations and what not, not so much texture filling, etc. The GeForce 750 is simply a weaker card and not designed to run 1920x1080 at a stable 60fps. Accept your 30fps and move on. If the 750 was designed to run full HD at extraordinary performance with newer titles, then there would be no reason for the 760, 770, 780 and so on.

YOU ARE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO ACCEPT THE PERFORMANCE YOU'RE GETTING OUT OF THE 750 RIGHT NOW WITH FFXIV.

Also, note, no game engines are the same. Just because you get whatever you get in ultra out of another game, doesn't mean you'll get the same with FFXIV.

Furthermore, you can't just take a benchmark and expect it's output to be exactly what you're going to get in real world usage. There's a lot more going on in the real game, as well as varying rendering conditions...

I'm quite convinced of replacing the CPU now. So do you guys think this would run FFXIV good: AMD Athlon X4 760K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor

I would be satisfied with 30 FPS lol, but the GPU is not being used by FFXIV, that's the problem. I'm getting 15 fps with lowest settings, which is not right,

If you go to the Device Manager does it show the iGPU under Display Adapters? Does it show any other Yellow exclamation symbols? it could be a chipset driver issue. But still possible that CPU is too weak. It is a single bulldozer module with shared resources between the cores. So at 80% it's probably maxed on resources.

the FM2 Athlon with the 750ti would be a pretty good combination.

No, the iGPU isnt shown at all, anywhere. DXdiag doesnt find it either and its not listed anywhere. I guess I will go with the athlon then, its not such a big change money-wise. Thanks!

I use Camp Tranquil (South Shroud) to benchmark my setup (adjust graphics settings). In other locations my pc can score 80+ fps, but in that location it drops to around 30 fps (HD 7870). Ofc official benchmark would say i have a perfect hardware, but in fact need at least GTX 780 to play the game at max (and a cpu like i7-2600 or FX-8320).

Ok. I was just curious about that because the iGPU is recognized after the board chipset drivers are installed. Your system will do weird things without the chipset drivers. If you didn't install all drivers from your motherboard disc you could try that. But the Athlon will definitely run better. It's also overclockable.
