So I might be going against the grain here, and about to get impaled by a horde of chocobo loving fanatics donning their newly acquired chocobo outfits, buut..
Has there ever been any mention of expanding the list of mounts you can use as companions? I did a forum search and only found the original dev posts about companions from way back in beta. In those, they use chocobos as an "example" but continue to refer to the system strictly as "companions", plural. I think as we keep getting more mounts it would be awesome to use some of them to fight by our side.
Some that would work well:
Ahriman (DPS (magic?), and possibly Healer)
Drake (Tank, DPS)
Coeurl (DPS)
Goobbue (Tank, DPS)
SPOILER:Magitek? Tank? DPS? Since the mammet heart you give it in the storyline gives it sentience.
As they expand the beast tribe quests to encompass other beast tribes, we will certainly get more and more mounts. Thoughts?
Are there plans to add additional companions?

Would be neat if you could get a beast tribe companion while you do dailies for them, adding some story and lore to the boring dailies *-*
like maybe a Sylph from the Sylph tribes that does magic or healing for example -

A moogle would be neat, I'd cover the more magical roles like Caster DPS, Healer/Buff type and Debuff Type.
But that'd actually make companions like Arcanist pets :/ -

There isnt any worthwhile content that can be used with the companion system yet but when it does, I'd like the companion system FFXI had without the summon time restrictions. FFXIV had that, in a way but they didnt help you in combat at all, just insert themselves into cutscenes and do the talking instead of you nodding and huhing (weird huh?).
Anyway, basically I want 'retainers' for combat that you can give items and tell what to wear. Make them only able to wear craftables to. Might help the market a bit and lets players see 'human' characters run around in anything other than myth/ct/allagan combos. -

It'll be nice if you attain a high enough gc score that you'll get your own recruit to train. It's fine if it like the chocobo system, but it'll be nice if you can create thier appearance like the retainer.

They have not gotten Chocobos right yet... what makes you think they should add even more when what is already available barely works?

I think the GC recruit idea is really cool, although perhaps it could also be like a 'bodyguard' you can be issued since you're such a high valued person (a person of really high GC rank). I also wish they would bring back my very well spoken miqo'te "companion" from 1.0 =( I miss her very much. I always really liked that concept that had going but thought it could've been taken so further than it was. You got to be with your NPC during the big cutscenes, but you couldn't even contact them outside that. It would have made perfect sense to be able to summon him/her to fight with you even if it was just as time-bound as XI's system.

I'd rather they brought a Beastmaster that actually had pets to fight with rather than have everyone have their own housepets fighting monsters on the battlefield. -

As a Chocowacker member i'm against allowing other animals to be part of the companion system. It should be only for Chocobos, in all sizes, colors and glory ^^

We have a behemoth, an armoured living machine with cannons and machine guns, a clawed toothed electricity producing lion thing, an evil eye from hell and 2 horned mythical beasts. I think the closest thing we have to a "house pet" would be the chocobo itself, ironically the only thing we can use as a companion...Quote:

The two things that have been discussed by Yoshida in the past are the following:
- Chocobo being the primary mount will be the only mount with any sort functionality/interactivity that will be more than just a mount. Ie. being able to level, summon, battle, etc..
- There was a brief mention where Yoshida was talking about possibly customizing the appearance only of Magitek armour, no weapons (as player mounts can't attack/shoot/spray/omglazers/whatever). There might be special missions where you can use a Magitek mount but I think we've already seen those, ie story line mission. Or the beastmen daily mounts.
