Weighting ilevel calculations

I've just been sitting here wondering...

Is there any reason every gear slot carries the same weight when calculating ilevel? It's just add up your gear ilevels and divide by 12 (Unless you have a shield or are wearing a cloak/tin can). If we want to stop people front loading their ilevel with i90 offclass accessories there needs to be a weight applied to each slot. Weapon would carry the highest weight followed by main armor slots, then belt, then right side accessories. We shouldn't be able to hit ilevel 67 with a 55 GC Weapon and AF gear. There's quite a bit of difference between that i67 character and one in mostly Darklight and a Garuda Wep...

average ilevel is average ilevel. Not accurate but we have to deal with it

In general, upgrading from ilvl 70 to 90, you will see the biggest stat increases for visible armor > weapon > belt > accessories > shield

Yeah, I agree that going off average iLv can be deceptive. Someone with a lower iLv can be stronger than someone with the same or even a higher iLv, depending on which pieces are i90 and which are i70, for example.

Basing standards off base stats (STR, VIT, etc), while not perfect, would probably have been a better measure of power level, which is all anyone cares about iLv for anyway.

I agree, which is why I still don't hold much stock in ilevel and just inspect like the old days.

Should be clarified here that 2H-weapons are counted as taking up 2 slots, which seems to not be obvious considering how many times I've had to explain how the games ilvl calculation works to others.
Personally I think it's obvious since with 2H weapon (or tool) you can't equip a shield (or off-hand tool).

13 only if equipping a shield otherwise it's 1 Wep, 5 Main Armor, 1 Belt, and 5 accessories for 12. For tin can or robes you divide by 11. They do not get counted twice. That's beside the point though. The issue is it's just a flat average when as you said you see a much bigger stat increase from the weapon and main armor slots and therefore there's a glaring difference between an i67 character with GC wep, AF gear and a wall of i90 accessories (which may or may not be for their current class)*-, and an i67 character with a bunch of lvl 49 accessories but an i90 wep and myth armor, or even an i67 with a Garuda wep and mostly Darklight.

The total iLevel is always divided by 13, and the average is floored.
Can easily be proven by trying to equip various pieces.
Equip Thyrus Zenith for example, and leave all other slots empty.
Ilevel shown by game will be 13.
Now equip Curtana Zenith only (not the corresponding Shield), and the iLevel shown by game will be 6.

X-slot gear counts X times.


That the iLevel average is largely meaningless in many situations is a different issue.

Equip a 2-handed weapon (level 13 or higher) and nothing else. Use your method to figure out what it should call your ilvl, then use mine. You are wrong.

When do you even see this? By the time you have a wall of i90 accessories, darklight gear is incredibly easy to get for alt jobs.

Could have a weighted ilvl calculation based on tome costs, as there's a more or less proportional investment vs return (at least on mainstat), although weapon is a slightly different matter. I came up with a spreadsheet a while back in 2.0 that did this, before ilvl was shown in game... think I may have posted on forums somewhere.

For getting rid of "accessory cheating" to boost ilvl, could ignore from calculation if that class/job the character is on would be unable to need on that accessory class. (e.g. don't count fending for non-tanks, but do allow maiming accessories for monk, etc) Or count them at half the ilvl.

That would prevent ilvl cheating to a degree, but it's not really a big deal to check someone and notice that they have wrong gear on for their class, and ilvl really doesn't say much about a player anyway.

So overall not really bothered, but I don't really do much stuff with random players, so is probably less of a concern for me than some people.

It's like people in full i90 myth. You can never know before you played with them if they are good or not.

But i agree with OP, ilvl mechanics are poor right now.

Sum the ilvl of each item... divide by the amount of ilvl you input... = average.

I will agree with the weighting... Should have more lean with weapons, since that gives the most "ability/strength". you see that DL weapon guy, gonna be a bad day.

It's not really that you can get more, just that you have gotten more. If you were, say, to run 2-3 Crystal Tower runs a week for some item (we'll say for your main job as to not contaminate this example), that's 400-600 Tomes of Philosophy for 100-150 Tomes of Mythology. Even assuming you get the rest of your tomes for the week in the most efficient way for Mythology, that's 5-6 Roulette to cap Mythology that week, or another 500-600 Philosophy.

So we'll say you make between 1000-1100 Tomes of Philosophy for each weekly unit (450) of Tomes of Mythology. It takes 4.2 weeks to get enough Tomes of Mythology to get full right side i90; or 4,200-4,660 Tomes of Philosophy. Left side Darklight costs 3,510 Philosophy. This means you have anywhere between 690 and 1150 tomes burning a hole in your pocket, and that's assuming you only bought accessories with Mythology and spent all of your philosophy on your left side on your main job (which we know isn't happening, because we already said that you're getting CT gear for that job as well).

Every job you level compounds that, by the time you've leveled 2 jobs to 50, I'd make an educated guess that you're sitting on a 3,000-5,000 Tome surplus. Of course, there are extenuating circumstances. If you are farming Extreme primals or early turn Coil, you'll get accessories faster, but chances are you aren't going to be doing either of those until you are done with at least your Darklight, which brings us back to the original numbers.
