left and right d-pad to scroll through mobs, up and down to scroll through players. I find it helps if I move the camera around behind myself facing the way my character is, left will scroll to the left mob.. example, mobs. A. B. C. your targeted on B, left will move to A, whereas right will move to C.. that's how I work the system anyways. just my .02
ps3 limitations... use a pc or hook up a mouse and keyboard ftw!
Hold R2 or L2 and press L1 or R1. That is the most efficient way to cycle through your enemies on ps3.
Keep in mind, you can't target with L/R2 method the mob if they are not in your line if sight. So if one ran off and started beating on a healer or ranged DPS, you have to change camera views to get them on screen to target.
Could never get used to that lol
What I've done is modified the default settings to only cycle through enemies while weapon is drawn. A lot of times the autotarget isn't on the enemy you want, it will be a pet or some random object in the distance. Once you change the settings targeting the correct enemy is a little easier. Other than that make sure to adjust your camera angle so you can see all the enemies you need to see, awkward camera angles can sometimes prevent you from selecting things due to not being visible onscreen.
Good luck! It will get better, though, as a fairly well experienced tank I still having targetting issues on occasion, so just know without mouse + keyboard you will still experience some problems.
hold L1 and use up/down on the d-pad to cycle through the enmity list.
Press cancel, face target you want. Hit accept.
Found this to be way more accurate and pretty much rivals a mouse. Only problem is if Key items get in the way (like tonberry oils).
Just a quick note also, I've noticed that when you cycle through the enemies (left and right) it disregards their distance to you and can cycle through enemies far up a hall or corridor and barely in your line of sight, so sometimes handy to adjust the screen view so that only those you are currently fighting to be visible.
I hold L1/R1 then tap bumpers to cycle through mobs, you might want to zoom in a little so you only have the engaged mobs on your screen.
Having played other MMOs as tanks, targeting was my main issue too and I almost regretted purchasing the PS3 version till I digged deep into the settings. There are 3 ways to select enemy targets using a controller:
1) Press the X button when you currently don't have a target: Select the nearest target in front of you.
2) Hold L2/R2 then tap L1/R1: Cycle through all visible Enemies on the screen
3) Press Left or Right on the Dpad: Cycle through filtered targetable objects (By default: All enemies)
Option #3 is the star here: Under Character Configurations (Target Tab) you can set up 6 different filtered lists. Mine is as follow:
_ When weapon is sheathed: All Visible Enemies
_ When weapon is unsheathed: All Battle Enemies (Enmity > 0)
_ L1 + Square: All Party Members
_ L1 + Triangle: All Friendly PCs
_ L1 + Circle: Others
_ L1 + Cross: Everything
When you cycle through battle enemies, Left would go up on the enemy list and Right would go down on the enemies list.
You really don't need all 6 filtered list like above. I rarely rarely ever need to use the last 4 lists. The first 2 lists are more than enough to Tank/DPS/Heal all around (Up and Down on the Dpad cycle through your party list if you need to cast a Stoneskin or Cover on a party member as a Paladin).
when weapon is drawn I only target enemies, npcs, and key items with left and right.
as others have said camera positioning helps a lot.
i'll ahve to try that L1 and up and down, there are some rare moments when i cant get the target i want
"hold L1 and use up/down on the d-pad to cycle through the enmity list."
This here is the way I do it as a tank.
I hold R2/L2 then R1/L1 to target my first target, lob that target, move in, Flash, then I go down the enmity list using the method quoted above. I found this to be more effective for myself, to cycle through targets to RoH them if needed.
Is that can be a little cumbersome to do with a full blown enmity list such as SRing WP.
Hi Buddy,
Why not look into a macro, it is what I have done for my PLD - seems to work easier than having 1,2,3,4 on a Square (because that just wastes space for other skills) - look online for good macros, you can apply these by pressing 'Start' and scrolling to the far right hand side, it should then be in that option list.

how to hold enmity on multiple mobs easily...
step 1: roll WAR
step 2: put overpower on your main bar
step 3: spam overpower 3-4+ times (until bored)
step 4: go afk, get drink, food, bathroom etc...
repeat until boss or dungeon complete
(wtf is target switching? trolol)
I use the dpad left and right to target enemies and whatnot, I've never really had an issue targeting this way. I think my settings are set so when my weapon is drawn I don't target party members so you can just cycle through the enemies (and occasional key item drop).
Another problem might be that if you tried tanking low level dungeons with people in AF1 or better it's going to be really hard to hold hate anyway unless you're level synced as well (had this issue myself, especially with high level bards attacking the moment I pull my marked target).
Assuming you're rolling MRD, pull with Tomahawk or whatever and just funnel the mobs into a cone in front of you and overpower 2 or 3 times to secure hate. You might want to get GLD to level 8 (I think) for Flash, can help you hold hate. Also marking really helps out since people generally won't be spread out in what they're attacking.
For GLD it's pretty much puch Shield Lob and flash 2 or 3 times.
I also have it set so that when my weapon is drawn, left/right cycles through only enemies and never party members. Up/down will always cycle through party members if need be. I'm doing enough while tanking on a ps3 as is, I don't need to be holding down an extra button just to select the next mob I'm going to do a rotation on. :D
