Monk question- Demolish

Greetings. I have 2 questions about Demolish

1) If I attack from behind periodic damage will tick 70*18 sec, and if from flank or in face tick will be 30*18 sec?
2) What is the first additional effect- damage over time 40*18 sec. It is a tick too? So, Demolish has double tick damage?

Demolish has a base damage of 30 potency
It also delivers a DoT with 40 potency for 18s, so 6 ticks, for a total of 160 potency.

If you attack from behind the base damage is 70 potency.

So given the entire durattion of the DoT, attacking from the front/side is 190 potency, attacking from the back is 230 potency

Oh wow, I never realised just how complicated that tooltip is. I think that must be incorrect (70*18 is obscene damage).

I was always under the assumption that the damage over time is fixed, only the initial damage varies in potency based on where you hit the enemy.

So the DoT will always be 40*18s. The initial damage will be 30, or 70 if you hit from behind. They really need to word that better.

I just tested this out in-game to be sure, and the DoT is the same regardless of where the enemy is struck.

It should read:
"Deals damage with a potency of 30. 70 when delivered from behind target."
and everything else the same

You mean 240 damage :)

For OP:
Some info about dots from another thread:
all DoTs tic based on server time, not application time. This means if the server decides that the tics are at :03, :06, and :09, if you apply a DoT at :01 and another person applies a DoT at :02, both of your DoTs will tic for the first time at :03. This doesn't affect gameplay that much, however it is worth noting.

So you'll hit 6 tics, but can't predict time to reapply dot after last tick

I made experiment using the training mummy and recovered the truth. So, the power of ticks will be the same no matter from what side Demolish was used. But the power of DEmolish itself (the damage of the hit itself) will be different- 70 potency from behind, 30 potency from any other side

I believe it's just an error in the tool tip caused by patch 2.1. IIRC it didn't do any direct damage before, just the DoT effect. It appears they didn't correct the wording and just left it saying, delivers damage over time. Only the initial hit is affected by your positioning. The DoT effect ticks the same amount no matter the angle you strike from.

Pretty sure that is how the other Dot tooltips look. Only difference being they don't have a positional bonus.

Nope, all the rest that have a direct damage component just say "Delivers an attack with potency XXX. Additional effect: Damage over time. Potency: YY."

Yea, it must just be a couple typos in the tooltip.

Demolish should say:
Delivers an attack with potency 30.
70 when delivered from behind target.
Can only be used when in Coeurl form. --- from here down it stays the same.

They just need to change the first "damage over time" reference to "an attack" and get rid of the first duration.

Somebodys math is wrong...
Total: Least you can do with Demolish during its full time is 270 if not attacking from the back. The LEAST. 30 potency + (6 ticksx40 potency) = 270. Your strongest move as a Monk I believe is 190. So as long as your Demolish lasts for 4 ticks (little more than half duration, 12 seconds), it will have been worth using. Mind you, 270 is the LEAST amount you can do. Its solid damage as ticks can not miss, but they can most certainly crit. And also scale with your buffs.

Yah, yah, I missed my math, I am well aware by now that 40*6 is not 160.
We all by now, however, pretty much helped the OP realize how the move is supposed to work. I'm so used to the wording of the game by now that I actually totally skipped some words in the tooltip and I was wondering why the OP was confused. Upon further inspection I realize the big typo they made.
