Something I've recently been scratching my head over is just why we have certain abilities in this game that don't have any functional purpose within combat even at the time they are achieved. Among the many, two that seemed to catch my eye both fell under the gladiator class: rage of halone and onion cut.
Rage of Halone:
Argueably, rage of halone could prove useful considering it's ability to augment damage as the character takes damage respectively, but its cast time and lack of damage output leaves this ability awarded from a class quest relatively meaningless.
Onion Cut:
As for onion cut, looking on the gladiator forum (at the least english one) no one seems to know what is so special about this ability or how it could prove useful.
Although some abilities inevitably become dated and useless as new ones come around, these two abilities among many others just never come into use for the player. Seeing this discourages me when I play other classes simply because past history with class abilities leaves me skeptical when I achieve a new one. I always feel like looking forward to an ability is something that will most likely end in failed expectations within this game. Most games have a fairly linear upward slope in the degree of power within abilities, although games serve well to give older abilities purpose even to the class's level cap, but having no use at all seems a little out of place.
Hopefully SE is aware of this already and not only focusing on new animations for skills, but that aside I'd also like to open this discussion up to the forum :). So let me know what you guys have to say :D!

Sweet thank you, now a lot of skills will be getting better due to algorithm fixes. Also in an interview a long time ago (even when old team was in) it said some skills were made for PVP purposes. Which I felt strange since... theres no PVP. So maybe the battle update will fix this.

I wonder if Onion Cut relates to enmity or something? I've noticed that if my party pulls aggro the monster doesn't necessarily target the person who initially caught the monster's eye but would always start attacking a particular person. It seemed as if they were coded to maybe attack the "weakest link" or something of the sort. Onion Cuts description seems to have language in its description that represents such a feature, but so far I haven't seen any testing showing Onion Cuts usefulness as an enmity tool.
If not, I totally agree with you. Onion Cut seems incredi-pointless. -

When the best WS you can put on your bar as a CON or THM or many other classes is an ARC WS (Bloodletter) there's some serious balance issues to be worked out. Weapon skills need to be class exclusive, or at least important WSs like Bloodletter. I'd miss being able to use Trunksplitter II on my ARC because then I'd not be able to farm crab shells.

Regardless, even hinting at it seems pointless to me so I agree with you. If it is aggro based it should read something like "increases enmity by feigning weakness" or something of the sort. The problem is reminiscent to how they worded fatigue. "Your shield skill bonus increases". <<< That was just a downright dick move in my opinion, calling it a bonus.Quote:

The "feign weakness" part is flavor text, like every every EVERY ability in the game has. All it does is "deals slashing damage."

Better to be useless than to essentially be a broken penalty move like Murderous Intent. Barely raises chance of criticals. Guarantees much less tp generation that not even comrade in arms can make up for.
