DEV Question: SMN and SCH Point Allotment Concerns

Hello everyone!

As someone who spent years playing both SMN and SCH in FFXI, I was over the moon when I saw what jobs they would be adding to the game all those years ago. Sadly, when I found out how they were going to work the point allotment system for both jobs, I was very sad.

With the way things are currently setup you have 1 of two choices.

1) Put all 30 points into either INT or MND (depending on what job you want) and be amazing while the other job gets a huge penalty.
2) Split the points 15/15 to both INT and MND, and never be at your full potential.

I do not understand why they could not keep the old system from 1.0 with point allotment in the sense that as a class you had your points, but when you changed to a job, you got another set of points to be more specific with your roll.

With the way it is setup now, a lot of players are either not touching one or the other, or playing both but being left out of events because they are missing a big chunk of their main stat. I tried doing the 15 INT 15 MND setup, and I instantly saw how far my heals fell on SCH to where I couldn't even stand it anymore.

I really hope the devs see this as a problem, because there are those of us who wish to not only play both jobs, but be the best that we can be at them, not just "ok".

It's an underhanded tactic to convince you into buying more character slots and leveling another whole new character. They gave you the illusion that if you leveled one class, you get 1 job and another "free" job with it. Lo and behold, it was a trick. They've said before it was intended to be the case, so it's far likely they also intended for players to buy the subscription that gives you 8 characters and just level all 8 to have all available for "maximum" efficiency.

The release of bahamut was a grand company conspiracy. You'll never look at your gc General the same way again.

@OP I feel your pain and I also hope that SE realizes this is a mistake (because they have said it's intentional...for now) and fixes it sometime in the near future.

Unfortunately, what you're likely to get on these forums is a bunch of people giving the unhelpful suggestion of "Lol it's fine just use GC item l2p noob!!!1". Without going into why this isn't a viable option whatsoever, all I can say is that my hope is that when SE adds the other jobs for the existing classes, that other people start to take notice of how stupid this is and throw a stink about it.

In my case now, I just play BLM instead of SMN since SCH is my main with +30 MND in it. I'd like to play SMN sometimes as it's cool, but I don't like having to purposely gimp myself or constantly grind FATEs for more GC seals for an overpriced item.

I don't think it's really an attempt to get you to buy more slots, I think it's more a sign of the general lack of understanding for how the armory system should function.

The devs seem to go out of their way to make things that directly conflict with the armory system. I don't think they are very good at adapting common MMO tropes to fit their specific game.

It is intentional as has already been said but people need to realise: just because you can play every job on the same character doesn't mean you can perfect every job. As far as I'm aware, FF14 is a lot more forgiving in this than most MMORPGs.

But is 15/15 that bad? No my friend is 15/15 and he does both jobs well, not "Amazing!! Dude I need you in my T5 static!!" but he does it well so if we need a magic DPS for anything outside of coil? we have it. Need a decent healer for primals etc? We have it! Or you could go 30/0, you'd be brilliant at 1 but less good at the other, I say less good but not bad. You can still be useful to your friends and be a utility player, if you are geared enough.

The system works as it was intended, make a choice, DPS, heal or a bit of both.

So far we only have 1 example of this but when new jobs are realised you will be making this decision multiple times for multiple classes.

I main a SMN and am currently on relic quest for SCH - I have all 30 in INT and don't see too noticeable of a difference from other SCHs - I have to pop one extra heal to keep up here and there, but you can still play both without too much issue.

I've commented on other threads on how I think this is really bad for people who, like me, play both jobs regularly. However, since the number of players who main SCH or SMN and also sub either of those jobs as one of their primary classes are not many (most people I know are either SMN main and WHM sub or SCH main and BLM sub.), you don't see a lot of complains around. I bet once branching occurs to more classes and more players are forced to sacrifice stats then you'll see more complains and maybe some action on the developers' side.

that's the price of getting two jobs from leveling one class.

I imagine we might see a change once other jobs get introduced.

Thanks for all the feedback. Right now, because there is only one dual-job class, yea we don't see a lot of people complaining about it. Once more jobs come out that branch off of other classes, we are going to be seeing a LOT of my type of threads. FF MMO's has never been about making a million alts just to play different classes, it's how they maintained being different, so I don't believe it's a ploy for more character slots. I just think it was poor decision making for what they had to deal with at the time.

For the person who said the detriment of losing MND on SCH was not that bad. You forget that our critical Aldo's are multiplied by our base stat... which makes us lose a lot of potential.

I was just looking forward to maybe having it how it was back in 1.0 where as a class you had a set of points, and then changing to your job you received a completely different set of points, because back then jobs were considered the party options while classes were for soloing.
