A idea just flashed through my head. "If the servers are underpopulated why not merge a few at least until the PS3 release."
Hell give us player a option to re-pick our server when the game expands it's server size once again. This is course is only ideal if your looking for more populated servers I know a good deal of people who enjoy smaller servers.
Not that I expect this to happen, I just thought it was a good idea to consolidate the current player base into fewer servers, not only for population purposes but so SE is aware of any issues that might pop up with more populated servers during the process of improoving the game.

Problems arise with player names and even retainer names if you go to a server and someone already has them. I think it would be more trouble than it is worth for SE to do something like this at the minute. Sucks if your on a low populated server I bet but I can't seem them doing this as I imagine it would be pretty difficult. Not to mention they said adding LS messages would be to difficult for them, you honestly want to trust them to move your character, all your items, retainers and gill to a new server ^^

Positives:
1) healthier economy
2) Larger Playerbase (will make grouping better)
Negatives:
1) Server Mergers spell the begining of the end for a mmo... massive negative stigma. If they want the game to rebound... merging servers will drastically hurt this.
2) Massive population problem with the ps3 launch. (will have to turn around and bring them right back up, without a server transfer system this means some people will not be able to play with their friends)
3) Larger Playerbase (people refuse to party... so higher populations = less room in Behest and less xp over all on solo mobs.... until people wake up and start grouping up less people is actually better unfortunately.. the whole community issue with the game atm)
I see a merger drastically improving the current condition of the game honestly... but pretty much putting the final nail in the coffin for the game. so we will get a great game for the year or two before SE stops supporting it. -

Dont get how it'd make a Healthier Economy?
I for one would go make a bunch of mules and compare whats low on my current then move to one with high value, did it all the time on XI and i could make 4-5 times what i originally had.
I'd also spend a week working my ass off on some shards before hand, stock pile a bunch of retainers/mules, and after judging the above condition I would move to a server with high output and sell like crazy, undercutting every second i get and putting price extremely high if im the only one selling. Besaid is on about 170/shard now, but my friend on other servers can sell easily 250-280. almost double what I can.
But thats just me and people wouldnt say thats a good economy. I dont know. -

Yea... it would be hard to accomplish... After Patch 1.18 for instance.. MANY old players will come back... even if only for the night... that would still cause server nightmares for that first nite

Why do we need to merge? Lindblum is only a 2 chocobo world and it's so packed anywhere near Ul'dah that doing anything like a behest is almost pointless to try.

Yeah I thought this is the reaction I'd see, not that it's a bad thing. It's good to know that people are not calling their servers barren wastelands anymore at least.
I never meant for it to be a permanent merger and to even allow characters the chance to pick a server when the PS3 launch arrives. But if people think the servers are good as is, then so be it. I don't really think not being able to get into a behest is a good reason to not merge though...
There are tons of places outside Ul'dah to behest and people should be hitting them up once in a while, perhaps a larger population would force people to spread out a bit. -

I was told that the Chocobo's only represent the population at the time that you look at them so they go up and down daily depends how many people are online at that time. It was supposed to help guide you to make sure you had the amount of people online during the time that you would play. So a server with a high JP population would have 3 Chocobo's at JP primetime if you checked during that time but the rest of the day it might drop down to 2 or even 1 Chocobo.

I wish someone would make a fantasy MMO similar to Eve Online's setup, so everyone plays together in the same world, but each zone could be hosted on its own server.
Think about it like this: if FFXIV was setup in this fashion, then they could redesign the game much easier than they could now. They could take the Black Shroud server down for a month or two, tweaking what needs to be tweaked, and even use in game lore to explain why the area is inaccessible, something like the Garleans invading and they're not allowing anyone in or out of the BS. -
