Where...where did my spell go?

I wish I had a video of this, but I can't sit around recording myself hoping for seemingly random occurrences to happen.

Anyway, has anyone ever experienced a completed spell that just....fizzles? It mostly happens on my SMN, but I have seen it happen on WHM as well. It usually goes like this:

• Mob has attention focused elsewhere (no chance for interrupt)
• Begin casting spell
• Allow spell to finish (Progress bar completes)
• Spell just dies after completion (no effect, no casting animation, etc)
• Frustration

Usually a recast is enough, but it can sometimes happen to me a few times in a row. I wish it were simply an interrupt, but the Progress bar never indicates an interrupt happened. It full on finishes and nothing happens.

Most recently it has happened in Pharos Sirius when attempting to Miasma the crawling zombies during Siren.

Most frequently it has happened in Copperbell Mines (easy) when attempting to Miasma gigas as they run across to attack the wall.

I will say it [I]only/I] happens when targeting mobs, never NPCs or party members.

So...am I the only one here? Bug report? Bueller?

had something similar on monk yesterday on hydra, hits did not "register", lost greases lighting a few times and even got fear for a few times
i could see everyone moving and using skills, then i hovered over connection icon in top right corner and saw sending: 0 receiving: something over 3k
like my client stopped sending data to the server, or rather server stopped receiving them

it suddenly fixed itself right after we left the istance

yeah i noticed the adds on the last boss in copperbell(or whatever) were "ignoring" my spells till they reached the boulder , although in my case i think it was due to them going behind me just before it cast which seemed to reset the los and fizzle the spell ..very annoying :)

Had this on hydra as well. I played on my GF's BLM. Helped some guildies with their relic. My friend also just got blm to 50 and he had the same issue. Its not a question of not hitting it. I just did nothing. Had multiple firestarter / thundercloud proc's. Clicked on them, see animation, yet no damage, and proc is still there. After 3 or 4 tries it finally hits, if the proc didn't just disappear. Any leads on this?

OK, starting to make me feel better about my CT run last night. I was DPS on ATAMOS and about half life I went to rebuff my DOT's and NONE of them stuck. I was worried I had forgotten to repair my gear and was busted but everything was at full when I checked. I un-targeted and re-targetd mob and they stuck fine, but lost ~10-15 sec of NO DAMAGE at all since no DOT's stuck and couldn't ruin during that time.

Probably just a lag spike.

Happens to me aswell after patch, most frequently at Hydra though. Had heals going off but not connecting, so needless to say that ended badly.

I've experienced something similar on my BLM from time to time. On occasion I don't get umbral ice or astral fire stacks for no apparent reason which can be rather bothersome.

Could be lag spike but could also be a miss. I thought my game was lagging in coil because i kept losing buffs. Turns out i was just missing the mobs, stacked some accuracy gear and all was fine again.

Probably just a miss. I thought the same thing was happening to me when certain DoTs were not being applied...but if you watch the numbers that appear when you toss a spell, it is the majority of the time just a missed spell. This will be more common the more difficult the content you are playing in, because these mobs require a higher Accuracy number for 100%.

(To iterate, lower-difficulty mobs require low Acc. numbers to have a 100% chance to hit them, but higher-difficulty mobs require higher Acc. numbers for a 100% chance to hit. Anything lower than 100% Accuracy on that specific mob can result in a miss. You can look up the different Accuracy caps for different content on the forums/web search.)

It could also be a lag spike, be these are few and far between (unless you have really bad internet). Most of the time the spell still applies with lag, albeit just late.

Btw if my memory serves me right, a mage need about 435 acc too 100% all content and melee about 470-480

White Mage in WP last night, got real panicked when healing seemed to do nothing to the tank, canceled my target and retargeted and it worked. Didn't even think of it until I saw this thread.

even after maintenance today, hydra is "laged" today too, atleast on shiva
and no its not accuracy prob as i have 460 acc :P

Well it could certainly be a server issue similar to how attacks rarely seem to register on big FATE bosses. I have not had this issue myself though.

Summoners have to take into account pet accuracy as well, which puts it around 445 for all content. But, that number is probably correct for BLMs and SMNs alone. :)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Glad I'm not the only one with this issue.

I'm going to keep an eye on this and attempt to continue to rule out lag, line of sight, etc. I'll update here if I find anything and potentially submit a but report.

This makes me think it's the mobs moving out of your vision range. If you start casting on a mob in front of you, and it moves behind/beside you, your spell will fail. If it's close enough to completion, an interrupt message wont show. The reason it never fails on party members is you don't have to be facing them to cast on them.
