How about a DPS-WAR ? Is it a great idea?

Starting to build & learn to play a WAR after my DRG reach full i90. Objectives is to make a noticeable DPS Warrior, a perfect OT

I allocated all 30 bonus stat on VIT, while i use full STR/DPS Accessory (my DRG acc). Try it on CT and go through like a champ. When i tank i use defiance, and i turn it off when i go dps

Now i have HP of 5126 / 6600++ on defiance. STR 411 and VIT 409. Parser on CT around 240-250

What do you guys veteran tanker think ? is this build would make it through end game content like primal and Coil (i use dual haken, by i get it using my drgoon, not as a tank)

It's not a bad idea to have an OT set that doesn't leave you squishy if you do need to pick up something on the fly. I've been wearing a similar setup (just much lower iLvl) and didn't take any significant hit to my own survivability.

Crafted vit accesorys with str melds or vice versa work well too

Example using Gryphonskin Ring. You can get Gryphonskin Ring for cheap on the Marketboards in Tonberry now (40k at most for HQ unmelded).

Then just grab accessories and spiritbond yourself. Sell materias you don't need, meld those you need. At base stats, Gryphonskin Ring is also usable.

I don't have much exp in coil, but I'd be willing to bet that build for War will make it substantially harder to complete since 2.1. At least before you could get some stellar self-heals with Inner Beast with the extra strength. Realize that by using STR accessories you are losing in the neighborhood of 75 Vit and Parry (at the top end). Warriors especially need the extra Vit, since we don't have the passive damage reduction that Pallys have.

I go with full i90 DPS accessories as the off-tank on Twintania, usually average around 200, but that's with keep debuffs up so the DPS is a bit lower, and I also have to hold back during Conflag phase so our MNK stays number 2 in threat to avoid being conflaged. I have like 7300 HP with food in DPS accessories which is more than enough to handle the 4 small snakes, DPS does drop a lot during the final phase when you are eatting eggs for the group, but before that it's pretty good. I see no other reason to bring a WAR as DPS though, you will never contend with true DPS.

The problem is Warrior only has one check effected by STR; Parry - don't expect it to keep you alive.


Your damage of course will be higher - but this also makes off-tanking problematic because your damage is always inherently linked to enmity generation. Unless you sacrifice the Butcher's Block combo - which nerfs your damage output.

The higher you get into end game - Coil/Primal EX the more difficult having STR equipment is for your healers. In 4-man dungeons having full STR gear, and even a full STR allotment is plausible in everything sans Pharos Sirius but you'd still be a tank in those instances.

In Garuda HM it's useful damage for the sister phase and helpful so long as you don't overtake the MT's threat generation, but when you hit Titan HM you're going to find it to be more of a road block.

In Titan HM people don't need a 2nd tank - even if that 2nd tank is STR spec. trying to do DPS. They'll just bring another DPS to fill the slot since it lowers the difficulty for person actually attempting to tank Titan. With 6600 in Defiance - yes you could MT and you could win but you'd need to some very impressive healers that are willing and able to keep you standing through Mountain Buster.

Once you hit Garuda EX - you can't MT this in STR - OT only but you'd bring extra damage set up this way which is a plus. Titan EX requires tank swapping and the lack of HP will invalidate your setup once again.

Coil T1 you're fine in STR until Caduceus, Coil T2 you'd need VIT gear for the nodes and then either VIT for the normal strategy or STR for the enrage strategy.

CT - STR is fine and it's going to let you control the boss easier if you're main tank (Bone Dragon/Acheron) it speeds up Atomos & Thanatos ; but CT isn't hard either.




TL;DR
Keep a STR set (Darklight) and build a higher iL VIT set and use them appropriately per the situation at hand - I would no change your allocation. 30 VIT is still the best option in that regard.

You have Drg, you have the big two handed DD. I can't see making a sub par war that you dps with unless you just want to cheat the duty finder wait times and still dps.

Just use your drg as the damage dealer and your war as the tank. Your hp at 6.6k against cad will get you munished (as we say in my FC ).

With the new changes to Enmity in Defiance, and Shield Oath, All you need to do is watch your threat, with Defiance off, and you won't pull aggro, however that aside, your HP levels are sickeningly LOW! I have more than you do without Defiance, and I still feel like I need more to compensate for lesser healers.

Best bet is to use Dragoon/Monk ilvl 90 acessories for extra damage with the highest Skill Speed/Determination set Warriors get access to.

Just don't expect any of it to work well on EXM Primals yet. Most groups cant do them in real gear, let alone DPS gear.

Turn 1 though, you can probably get away with 7000 HP in defiance. Turn 2... Enrage mode? lol Turn 4 I suggest tank gear. Turn 5, ALL DPS gear. =)

WAR DPS is fun to play with, I run around doing everything but serious content as ilvl 88 STR gear with 30 STR spec. Swap to VIT gear (still 30 STR) for actual tanking (Coil+). As OT /DPS WAR your rotation just cant have butcher's block. You WILL rip it off any tank with a enmity generating ability 1k+ crit even another WAR.

As a Pet Project, I say go for it. But if your really serious about tanking all End game Content including Coil, I wouldnt reccommend equipping to much DPS accessories. 6600 HP is pretty low for a WAR espcially if you want to complete turn 5.

Here's my reccommendations

- If your strapped with cash, invest in some crafted accessories (Grypho, Rose Gold )
- Build 2 Different Sets for WAR on your hotbar. 1 more focus on DPS, 1 Strictly for Tanking and switch between the 2 depending on the fight.
- If the idea of being really tanky with some dps capabilities is what really intrigues you, roll Marauder in PVP.

DPS off-tank build isn't too useful outside of CT in my opinion. Most fights either only require one tank or tank swapping, so DPS build isn't too practical.

All the HM primals just require one tank. It might be viable for Garuda EX, but Titan and Ifrit EX need tank swapping and if you use STR items, you will be too squishy.

T1 might be viable until the Snake split, T2 and T4 it probably won't be viable since you have to tank swap / tank adds. T5 maybe, but snakes hits hard.

Will be extremely fun for CT though.

Tanking pre and post 2.1 with Gryphonskins. Don't seem to see a problem there. There hasn't been a content that requires more HP than what iLvl 90 + Gryphonskins can attain. Bar exception like if you want to solo tank EM Titan, you'd need all of them iLvl 90 and as much Vit as possible. Tried solo tanking EM Ifrit. Not possible...

Dps war is as easy as turning off Defiance. My current set up (str20/vit10) allows me to reach the 10k+ hp with Defiance + ToB + party bonus w/o food. Also if i get a melee I get the str bonus putting my str at 400. As soon as I get my last ilvl 90 ring I'll go full Str. I'm noticing a 50 point damage (str20) difference when off Defiance. It allows me to effectively be the OT without being to squishy. IMO as long as your hp can hit above 10k with buffs then you have more than enough into vit.

dps warrior is insane good, constant high numbers, 1k-800k crits. Don't worry about pulling off a tank cause you will be doing storms eye/bb combo back and forth so by the time you do storms eye, the tank will have a good lead again for a BB combo. Theres a video of a dps warrior.

Just wait for SE to give Marauder a DPS option called "Berserker". Then you can DPS all you want!
