Heals targeting self

Is anyone else having this problem? I've never had this issue until recently, but my heals keep randomly targeting me even though I have tank targeted and in range. Fortunately, it hasn't caused any disasters yet but it's certainly creating more stressful situations than I care to deal with.

Are you using any macros? If for some reason the macro causes you to heal no target or an enemy, it will automatically default to yourself.

Are you trying to heal someone that just got revived? Freshly revived players have an immunity set about a second or two after the animation is finished.

I do on my SCH but not on my WHM, but I'm having the same issue on both. I'm having this happen even when I'm literally in the tank's face with him focus targeted. I'm baffled because this literally has never happened until just a couple of days ago.

No, I'm aware of that.

I thought it might've been the <me> causing problems but that should be getting overwritten unless <t> was out of range, which hasn't been the case. Plus I'm seeing this problem on my WHM too, and I don't have macros for WHM.

Should I post this in technical/bug? I feel like an idiot since this doesn't seem to be happening for anyone else. >>

Guys, it's NOT from macros.

It can happen even if you manually target....happens to me all the time. Not sure if the game is dropping the tanks packets or mine, but you go to Cure the tank, and Cure lands on you...causing you the fun of double curing.

Happens to me more in dungeons when switching from casting a DD spell on the mob, turning CS off> targeting tank and curing...I target tank directly in party list. If I do it 'too fast' Cure lands on me and not the tank. It can also happen if you go to change party member targets to heal (happened to me today in Haukke HM), have tank targeted, needed to heal a dd, targeted DD, cast cure and cured myself causing me to have to re-cast real quick on DD.

It does seemingly only happen if you switch targets...so Switch from tank to another party member it can happen or Switch from Mob to tank same thing. I think it's because we can change targets/start healing faster than the game knows we did it. It SUCKS royally though.

I don't know why it happens, but it is a known issue amongst WHM's. Don't know if SE is going to fix/can fix though.

But it is NOT a macro script error. You can replicate the same issue without using a macro.

If this really is the case, then I think the problem is on my end. Now that I think about it, this has been coinciding with me moving to a school connection (why do schools charge so much for tuition and have such bad connections T.T).

Using dynamic targets like <mo> or <tt> will occasionally cause a "miss target" and default to yourself but I've only noticed it happening when spamming single heal (Physick) for a period of time.

To remedy this, I use static targets and keep the tanks in the 2nd and 3rd party position. For everyone else I use <mo> Physick and just highlight their names in the party list.
It may seem excessive but you never miss and don't have to worry about targeting tanks.

I've been having my targets deselect and reselect themselves really quick if I hold down my left mouse button after targeting and let it go. Maybe something similar is happening to you at the same time you happen to be casting a heal, causing the heal to go to you instead of your target?

Just a thought.

I don't use macro, but if the tank dies or becomes deselected from being too far or what have you, the heal will target myself.

If I'm using say like the gamepad and I don't confirm the target I'm healing, after the first heal, the target will snap back to the primary target. If no primary target selected, the game will just heal myself. I thought this was an intended mechanic, so I've been using it to target myself sometimes.

I use mouse over macros, and this happens to me all the time. It's very frustrating on my WHM. (Less painful on SCH because I have Embrace macrod to my Physick and Adlos, so fairy usually heals them while I'm here wasting a cure on myself.)

Face target does help a lot though, so you can quickly cancel and recast. Like if you're healing the tank, and didn't face towards them, that's a red flag. Lol

This is the only macro I use for a WHM for curing Tanks. And it works for me flawlessly.

Even when manually targeting to heal, my heals still go through to the target I'm trying to heal, no problem there.

The only way I've got this problem to occur is using a macro that failed to execute, such as:
/ac "Cure" <tt>
/ac "Cure" <t>

or using no macro but attempting to heal a hostile target.

/ac "Cure" <f>
/ac "Cure" <mo>

These macros will not execute at all if these conditions aren't met.

If you have no target, just casting a Cure(No macros) spell will not execute. However, Physick, on the other hand does execute even if you have no target.

If your current spell-target is an enemy, no-target, or a dead player... then your heals will default target to yourself.
If you are using macros that have a VARIABLE-target (<t>, <tt>, <mo>, <bt>, <f> etc) this might be happening in the line order execution.
If you are using macros that use SINGLE targets (<pet>, <1> / <me>, <2> etc.) this is less likely, but still may happen if you attempt to cast on a dead target (I believe non-existant targets still fail)

Again, you are all missing the point.
You are in a Duty, DDing or maybe curing another party member when you realize, time to cure the tank. So You target the tank.

The tank is targeted.
The tank is in range.
The tank STAYS in Range and STAYS targeted as you cast Cure, but it does NOT cure on them, it hiccups and cures you. It happens with or without macros.

I don't know what causes it other than to say, it seemingly only happens when I switch from the mob as my target to the tank or from the tank to a party member for a targeted cure and don't wait a second. Basically, what I think is happening is some of us, have faster reaction times than the game and are switching targets and casting cures before the games delay catches up with us (IE lag). So for the SAME reason some people go 'DUDE I was out of that plume!...and you in fact see on video, they were on their screen, occasionally, in the heat of the moment, the same thing can happen with a Cure...that the game didn't process the switch in target but DID catch that you are casting a new spell'

No, we're not too dumb to see that we don't have the tank targeted.
No we're not all using macros.
No we're not talking about when someone runs out of range... yes the same 'effect' happens, but that isn't what is being discussed.

And no: Having to write Macro's to circumvent the issue isn't an answer. I'm faster than your macro..the only reason it is working is because the macro adds in the 1-2 seconds of delay you need for the data center to catch up to the information you are sending.

I don't record my gameplay, but if there are WHM's having this problem who DO...can you record a couple instances of it happening and maybe post what those videos both here and in the bugs forum? It might be the only way to maybe get closer to remedying the issue. But until people can actually see I think it's going to be a 'your macro is wrong' debate, and not an oh...yeah wish that would stop happening too conversation.

I am also concerned about this issue. I tend to heal myself at random when I have tanks targeted, focus targeted, facing them AND mouse over on them. I dont really know where to even begin trying to figure out where the issue is. Theoretically, if my tanks are on target, focus target, AND my mouse is over focus target, I should actually be healing said person. Yet, here and there a really important heal gets wasted on me. Is it really the mouse over that has become an issue? Didn't really notice it pre-2.1 patch.


Can someone explain more about the "face target" macro though? I'm a little confused. Does that mean that heals with this function will heal the Focus target?

Edit: I've a theory. What if the server registers one target at a time because "target's target" is merely a function that exists in game client only? Just to clarify though, while I don't dps in T4, it does still happen. It's possible that other variables had caused the issue in T4 and that I just haven't picked up on it.

No, it just makes your character turn and face your target. It's the same as hitting the F key or having the setting turned on to automatically face your target with every skill. JonFarron was saying you can use it (sometimes) to tell if you're casting on the right target, since you'll (sometimes) turn around, whereas self-healing will keep you facing the same direction.

I suspect there might be a little bit of delay between clicking on someone and having them registered as a valid target. Have you ever tried targeting someone who's not quite in range (the run back from a wipe in CT, for example)? Sometimes the client seems like it's trying to target them, and then realizes it can't and gives up. I think I've had it actually put the little yes-really-targeted outline around them in the party list for a split second before switching back. There might be enough of a disconnect for this to be the issue when there are no macros in play. You click the player, then click your keybind, then the client decides the target is valid, but you're already self-casting.

Are people reporting these issues using self-cure as one line in their heal macro (after <t> or <mo> or whatever)? I only have <mo> macros for all my heals (one line only, no alternative target options at all) and have never experienced this issue.

Still don't see this happening in instances I've been in. Maybe it has something to do with sub-targeting the tank, you know, when the targeting ring/circle appear on-screen when you're targeting a player/enemy/object – this doesn't display the target's information in the target bar – but you already a have main target – this target's information is displayed in your target bar.

This could be the problem, but don't quote me on that as I've not succeeded in replicating this issue to really see what's going on.

I do, however, always make sure that whoever I'm healing is confirmed to be my main target. And I never have an issue healing doing this.

Let's just clear this out once and for all. For those of you not using macros and have this issue there are 2 things that causes this problem. If you by any chance are not facing the target you want to heal then the game basically tells you that the requirements for healing that specific player is not met so you heal yourself. Put legacy controller on and this problem has now been sorted. The other issue is, you are basically to fast with hitting the cure as you are switching targets. Which basically means, the you have a slight delay as ur changing targets and lock it into place, if you spam ur cure at that time there is a chance you activate the Cure on no target at all, thus resolving in you healing yourself.

For those with macros, the only ones having this problem is the people that have weaved in /ac "Cure" <me> (or whatever healing spell u use, physick etc.) into their macro.

If you are clicking your macro too fast at this point, at certain point it skips the first command and instantly jumps to the second command which is healing urself, so what you do is you never ever use <me> in a healing macro, instead you bind selftargetting to a key close to you if you are soloing and need to heal urself, or you just hover the mouse over urself and heal. Third option is making a macro specifically for selfhealing.

There has been reports of a bug that that basically makes you fail in healing your target due to him/her moving while you cast a heal, there is nothing to do about that apparently but rrely happens.

I also do NOT use macros and I have this happen as well. Facing target, have them targeted, and it will cure me. Seems to happen a lot with regen too :/

My experience as a tank makes me think this is what is happening. Healers are hard locking on a player so that any group type skills will be directed towards that player(hard lock is the little circle above the arrow on top of palyer.) They may switch off to another group member with the intention of casting multiple skills but they did not hard switch to the target. Without hard switching - the first skill will hit the selected player, but the skill cast after would go back to the hard selected target. Playing as a healer the last few nights - I have yet to encounter the issue that is being talked about. I am playing with an xbox 360 controller on a pc for reference.

I have noticed the same thing happening. It seems to fix if I slow down and not mash my macros/skills too much but I do think this should be tweaked because I think it definitely has an effect on the ability to heal, especially during times when there is a lot of aoe healing required + movement. It also seems to conveniently happen at the worst times, probably because its when the tank or a dps is near death that I end up trying to heal faster than the game can keep up with.

Interestingly enough, I haven't had this issue since patch 2.15. Makes me wonder if something was broken in 2.1.
