What's causing FiOS users to get so much lag since 2.1?

Has a rep responded to this yet? I've seen some FiOS users complaining about it here and on another site. I'm not saying lag is exclusive to FiOS users, but those of us that have had no problem before are all of a sudden having an issue now. My connection doesn't have a problem with everything else I use it for, btw. Just ARR.

I have Fios, too, and actually noticed more lag in the last week or so. Could also be my PS3, or a combination of both. But it's all hardwired, haven't changed a thing.

I'm betting it's just depending on where you are. The servers are in Montreal, so if you're from the west coast or very far south you have many many hops on the way to Montreal. I'm in Socal and am basically forced to pay for a VPN just to play this game. This should never ever ever happen in a AAA MMO.

Distance from the servers isn't an issue. My lag wasn't this bad even when I played 1.0 and the servers were in Japan. The issues I've been facing have only started happening after the 2.1 update. It gets so bad sometimes that when I do Titan I just see him and my party standing around for a few seconds not doing anything...then everybody pops back into place.

Somebody was saying our data center was having problems, so that may be the case. I'm about as far away from Canada as you can get lol

I hear its your ISP treating FFXIV as peer to peer traffic and thus throttling it giving you lag. Something you have to take up with your ISP.

It's not just Verizon, and it's not just NA servers.

I have DSL, and play on a JP server. I've NEVER had lag until this past week or so. In fact, a few days ago I was hit by an AoE before the red circle even appeared ^^

I'd really like to hear on this... I have 85 down - 35 up fios and run great on everything but this game in the last week. I play on ps3 and it's terrible now. Everything rubberbands, even just standing around in the city. It makes Titan and other raids near impossible.

Yeah, I've been rubber-banding constantly and I'm on FiOS too. I don't know how in the hell I managed to successfully heal Titan HM today with it, but I did somehow.

A lot of people are getting it though. It's really odd.

Same. I also use FiOS but ever since the 2.1 patch I've been getting really nasty lag spikes. I tend to notice them happening at varying intervals but when they happen they're pretty bad. I've tried all the normal routines for a fix (resetting router, updating software, etc) though it continues to occur.

Statement: On a serious note, run a traceroute on the IP of the server you are on (available on ARR Status. Should give a general idea where the break in the pipe is so to speak. If it in your ISP, open a ticket with them via their help desk, if it is with SE, use the traceroute as evidence with Customer Service.

Yup tried this though I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Trace route took 16 hops with normal ranging pings on each hop (generally less than 60ms). So no "leaks" here on my end.

Comcast, Seattle. Getting bad spikes and got kicked with lockup. Had to restore data on ps3. Tested with Netflix (I know not a game) loaded fine. Here's to hoping.

After the update tonight I jumped on to test... All seemed well, however it was not meant to be. The lag is still there, and angrier than ever.

The issue seems to be with Level3. Large packet loss at ae11.edge2.NewYork.level3.net as well as ae-11-11.car2.montreal2.level.net typically speaking. Seems to be better 2AM-10AM EST or so but awful during normal usage time.

Before 2.1 (before the servers required us to select the corresponding data centres specifically) I was able to dodge the entirety Titan HM unscathed.... Since 2.1 "rubberbanding" has caused more than a few deaths on my part (even in lesser difficulty Dungs./Raids let alone XM) I am sad to admit. This is not an isolated incident, no matter how close to the Datacentre you are are geographically. (I myself am only 8 Hrs drive from Montreal). My hope is that many people bump this thread so we can (possibly) get a response from the Dev team.
If not, C'est la vie. Ill keep playing because love this game, I just cant stand dying to "rubberband lag".

Fios here as well. From Delaware my trace route seems to go to Dallas, then to Chicago, then up to Montreal. Wonder if WTFast may help with better route.

I'm also getting terrible lag freezes. Didnt even see one of the landslides last night on Titan EX, until i was in mid air.

Also using FiOS, it's been terrible since the patch (was fine before). 2-3 second lag spikes, 90000 errors where I used to never get them, teleporting players/NPCs... Can't do some of the HMs anymore at all, Titan hits with me with weights and I never even see them.

Even mining is annoying now, often I have click 2-3 times just to get a node to gather once.

I'm on east coast FiOS and I was having the same issue. I googled my way into this reddit thread.

People in there reported positive experiences with WTFast and after trying it out last night it seems to have cleared up my issues as well. You can use this program for a month for free with no sign up so it's worth a shot if you're having problems. Hopefully whatever we're all running into will be fixed in that time. :p

My fiancee and I are still having problems with this lag, and we have fios as well. Hoping the maint. they had last night cleared it up but I guess not :<

Same problem here. Wife and I have had serious lag issues in and out of instances since the 2.1 patch. Also on verizon FIOS.

Same as above (speed and everything), was fine until the last week or so then started to get really bad lag. Asked a few alliances while I was running CT if anyone else was having the same issues and many said they ere experiencing lag in the game where they once had no issues. Nothing else on my computer is having this issue, just FFXIV and mostly in instances. Haven't tried CT yet today, but I was getting a bit of rubber banding/lag in WP earlier. I want to say something got messed up in the last patch seeing this wasn't an issue before.

So I would like to spread some information that I am sure 99% most users don't know. In certain areas it is VERY cold. The way ISPs transport your data long distances is using fiber. Fiber reacts poorly in very cold conditions. You must constantly make changes.

Level 3 (which is a transport provider) along with many other services are prone to have packet loss. I am sure they are constantly trying to fix the issues, but sadly it is inevitable. That is just a issue with today's equipment. You can fight it by adjusting AMPs so the light is "hotter" but you can only adjust so much. And if the temperature changes, you must revert what changes you did so you do not burn out the receiving AMP.

Customers will of course not be ok with this, but that's fine. That is just the way it is sadly. Once weather warms back up, you may be surprised. BTW just because its not cold where "you" are does not mean its not cold where your Internet traffic is going.

Fios in Dallas. Same issue as everyone else. Sad now.

I have had this problem since I started playing the game, but more noticably since patch 2.1. It would seem from what I have read on the forums that a large porption of people are having the same issue with level 3 communications. I have a lattencey of 34ms at 212.187.201.87 location but that jumps to over 110ms at the next location 4.69.141.189. Both of these locations are in London, but after many a phone call to my ISP they have informed me I would need to contact sqaure enix as they are the client of level 3, and its an issue they will need to resolve amongst themselves. Hopefully if enough people contact SE or post within these forums the devs will have to take notice and resolve this issue and allow us to enjoy the game we all pay so much money to play.

Ummm no. Cold weather is not causing our lag/latency/rubberbanding. It's something on SE's end. They probably tried to cut corners and save a couple dollars some where and now this happened. Combine that with the fact that there is zero customer service outside of Japan...yea we will be waiting.

Yep.

I have FiOS as well, and have been getting big lag spikes since 2.1 like the others in this thread. Tracert shows that the Level3 hops in Montreal are an order of magnitude more latency than any other hop. So it shouldn't be a FiOS thing, it should be an anyone who peers with Level3 for transit issue.

Actually if everyone else but Fios Does not have this issue. it would be easier to assume its something on Verizons end. I mean why would a SINGLE ISP have this issue when the only difference between it and others is that Verizon manages it.

A direct example could be similar to the issues FF had in Beta as being seen as a torrent and ISP's cutting bandwith. perhaps verizon again after the size of the FF Patch designated it as such? much more believable then SE magically effecting an ISP

Same here, FIOS customer, lag has been so horrible lately. It makes me and my wife look like noobs on Twintania. Same problem, run a ip trace and it chokes up at LEVEL3. Been using the WTFast program for a couple days and it really cleared it up but its only free for 30 days. I dont feel i should have to pay $5-$10 for a program just to connect efficiently to a game im already paying $15 a month to play.

No extra programs will help. People in my FC with actual lag problems get help from Pingzapper and such, but this new problem for FIOS is not related to us. It's on SE's side. We can't do anything but complain and hope they acknowledge us at some point. Bad thing about having the best internet = you're a minority and easily overlooked. So much for being hardcore.

It's getting depressing. People log in for the weekends, needing help with Titan EX and relying on certain others, but those certain others are the ones who randomly freeze mid-fight. This lag is the worst lag in the history of FFXIV, too, because it can't be predicted. There is no way to tell when it's going to hit, but you can be sure that when it does, you'll be knocked out of the arena before landslides even begin casting. Most of my FC is just sitting in town right now, too afraid to do anything.

I'm also a verizon fios user over in Texas and today i had to leave a Titan Extreme fight due to lag so bad i couldn't even move in time for the landslide. I called Verizon and they said they couldn't do anything on their end. I also never had any issues until after Christmas.

WTFast works perfectly (for me) actually. Since you connect via their servers you are getting a different route to the Montreal DC, presumably (since its better) not via Level3.

This is how I am atm, Doing very little in game activities.

I am at titan hm with my summoner, trying to do it with my friend and a group of our friends helping us this time around. Oh lawd.... its a hit or miss game going on most of the time because we can beat the heart and keep up for a bit.... (over half gone) but lol.... when that lag hits it just all goes down the drain. xD

Edit: I guess I should add that I use FiOs as well and I am a pc player so it's not because of any ps3 lag, hehe. soooo yeah.... connection problems here and there. :x

Also a FiOS customer here, and I can vouch for the annoying connection problems that started a little after 2.1 hit.

For the most part it seems like an overall increase in latency, but I'll occasionally have huge lag spikes and lose a whole 3 seconds or so at a time too. Nothing like that ever happened before.

I guess Im glad Im on Central America. I dont use FIOS and I havent got any lag issue since 2.1 unless I use my PS3.

The choke point appears to be level3 for me as well, again, not an issue before 2.1
