I've gotten LNC to level 13 so far but I do wonder how essential the skills are for a job like Bard. I get that Blood For Blood can boost damage, but is it by so much that it necessitates giving up a slot for it?

At least get invigorate.
Yes, you want B4B, yes it is important, don't be lazy.
Invigorate is required. Not getting B4B is fine if you want to single player stuff. Oh you want to do group content? Then you should get it.
10% damage boost from BfB isn't gonna make / break the content, but Invigorate does.

If a lack of a 2.5% damage buff prevents you from clearing a dps check, chances are you have room for gear improvement. Invigorate, however, you should definitely get. In many of the endgame fights, you will run out of tp long before they are over without it.
It's not a 2.5% damage buff, Beardfist is special. It's a 10% buff during a DPS check, which is significant if you're doing endgame content. When you no longer need it for DPS checks, then it becomes a 2.5% damage buff.
Furthermore, who wants someone in their raid who was too lazy to get all their usefull cross-class skills?
Invigorate definitely get. That heal for 400TP is very helpful, and will be very necessary at endgame content. Blood for Blood helps with the DPS quite a bit at endgame content, though not as much as it once did (that nerf really hurt the damage output).
Not everyone is overly geared for dps check. hell I had 1 item slot which is +1 relic to get the old BiS before 2.1 and I still needed blood for blood on no fireball conflags especially if either the monk or the blackmage is the one targetted by it.
yes if you are going to do end game group content you need it to 34.
