Please dont turn this games community into something like WoW....

Hi all!

Just wanted to toss this out here, someone else may have already done so, but here it is again. MMO's are played by a very DIVERSE group of people. All ages, all player types, all situations. I try to be as helpful or informative as I can be, as do others, and I always listen to anything constructive others say to me, and try to be a better player, but I have to say that some people out there are on the WoW elitist kick.

Please keep in mind for every pro player, there are dozens of not so pro folks out there. Maybe people are learning, or attempting to learn how to perform roles in groups. Maybe its someone's first time tanking a dungeon, maybe a few people haven't yet made it past Castrum Meridium. Maybe some people want to enjoy the storyline and CS. Now, I FULLY understand, that a lot of folks are used to speed runs and blowing through content as fast as possible. This is fine if you are with a group of friends, or are running FC or LS content with members, but please, keep in mind, when you step into Duty Finder, you have NO CLUE what the status of the other 3, or other 7 people might be. For example, if someone is JUST starting out as a tank in Sastasha, it shouldn't matter that you are a lvl 50 fully kitted PLD tank on your 2nd character, it is NOT your place to run in and gather mobs, or set the pace for the dungeon.

Elitism is not exclusive to WoW. It exists in all games all culture and every aspect of life.
It is a human trait.

Beginner tanks have a rough time of it as it is, why make it more difficult? And why is everyone against CC? Its useful, its nice, it makes big pulls super easy on the tank and heals, so why aren't we doing it? And if people ARE doing it, why the hell are you smacking it? In WoW people just stopped caring, it was go as fast as you can, wipe, wipe, get mad at tank or heals, ragequit. This is happening more and more on this game, and its depressing. These games are made to enjoy with others, not scream insults or lay blame or accusing someone of not knowing how to play their class.

I agree wholly with you AmyNeudaiz, I know its wasted effort, but I wouldn't mind seeing other people actually have a good time instead of getting mad, angry, or ragequitting after two wipes. Wishful thinking I know....

I just wanted to put out there that a little consideration for others goes a long way. Someone failtanking? offer tips or advice in a constructive way. Someone keep making the same mistake over and over, send them a tell, ask them if they need help or an explanation. The way some people act, it scares new folks into outing themselves as new to the content. This sets a bad precedence. Im just asking for others to just be aware that with Duty Finder, you just. never. know.

Also, when an experienced player in the raid informs you to stay out of the middle (hydra) or run away or what have you, it would probably be in your best interest to listen. If you are constantly ignoring a raid leader that's done the run many times and clearly knows what he/she is doing, its going to be a bad time for everybody. just sayin.

You can meet some kind hearted "elitist" and other players. Since the MiP system I have been seeing a lot more people kiss each others butts for votes rather than being rotten. I haven't truly ran into someone off-their-rocker in a couple of months. This could be because I play mostly with my coil LS especially on EX primals. Regardless, I think your statement has been posted many of times in many different versions.

And im not saying that this is everyone. There are a lot of cool, interesting, down to earth folks playing this game. Many of them will be more than happy to explain encounters or mechanics to you. But you need to speak up. Don't be afraid to say you are new, or you aren't sure where to go. If someone is being a jerk to you because you are new or inexperienced, then I feel for you, but the best thing in that situation is to leave. I stress again its only a handful of folks now, but this type of behavior is epidemic, and spreads FAST.

Very true, not all elitists are jerks. Im just stating that the handful that are, that kind of thing spreads, I was hoping we would be at least an expansion or two away from it.

Im not calling anyone out, im just saying, I really really enjoy playing the game, and have met some awesome people, I just don't want to see this turn into WoW.....

Like one of the posters said earlier, the attitude isn't something that is WoW-Related. It's related to human nature whenever there is competition or any sort of "measuring stick" to use against others. You would see this behaviour in every facet of life, but the fact that even in sprawling cities, a normal person is only able to interact with so many people on a daily basis, we don't see this as much. WoW (and other online game) only see this phenomenon because of the easily accessible forums and other online media that let people (us) see the reactions of dozens/hundreds of people in less than a few hours; Where as it would take us signficantly longer to even attempt to interact with that many on a face-to-face basis.

Though, i would hazard a guess that only a scant few of the community here have -actually- interacted with the WoW community they are so afraid of. Coming from WoW, there were of course bad eggs, but there were far more people i came to like and/or trust over the years i played. Most of the hatred towards the WoW community seems to be based on rumours of how bad others say the community is, and rarely from first hand experience.

And though you say you are not calling anyone out, you are; Especially when you create a topic with an inflamatory name such as this a few months into the game. You are essentially insulting those that come from WoW because you believe the community they come from is toxic; all the while attempting to try to hold yourself above them.

And it didn't even remotely begin with WoW.

Way to be judgmental.

Ppl become elitist when they are too focus and determined to reach his or her objective. It is normal.

For the sake of reference, WoW had this and this, but also brought us this, this and this. You take the good with the bad with a large community. And I don't know about the OP, but I want a large community with the huge amount of diversity WoW's playerbase has.

It's rather funny and sad that this has to be said, as you are totally right, it's not the WoW community per se, it's just how humans act in general. True the WoW community had a more vocal segment that acted like that, but that was actually by far the minority.

Is it 1000 words or characters? 1000 characters is small as hell, 1000 words is still small, but workable... Either way though, it shouldn't be that small.

Tbh, since I've "returned", I'm finding WoW's community much more fun than FFXIV's.

I actually wish this became more like the WOW community; but my experience with WOW was likely far different from yours.
It was very pleasant and enjoyable for me, to put it plain. But I mainly played vanilla up until Cataclysm. At which point I was already playing multiple MMO; eventually leaving WOW outside of the picture for other games.

Similarly, I am getting some deja vu with this game and vanilla WOW.
Unfortunately, the leadership/dev team for this game is far inferior IMO. Their decisions are even more poor and lacking in foresight than WOW's dev team. So from that perspective, I also wish this game had more WOW influence. From the mechanics design, I wish it had a bit more of GW2/FFXI design (If you know what the 0.3 sec delay is, then you know GW2 has that ironed out; for FFXI, I suppose it's mostly personal nostalgia, so I'll leave it at that).

TL;DR.
It's all the same. Doesn't matter what game you play. It's all a matter of perspective.

WoW's 'community' are spoon-fed teenagers given a game that hands out entitlements and prizes like candy to keep the scrubs in line, while the hardcore players proceed to work on the top end stuff. The quality of game design as a whole has declined dramatically over the years as players have gotten bored of the 'new expansion has come out, everything you've worked for now is worthless'. Although Blizzard couldn't balance a plate flat on a table, they've at least 'innovated' (or shamelessly stolen) quality content into the mix and kept people generally happy.

the XIV community is one that full of FF fans that have been badly abused by horrible game design decisions over the course of several years, begrudgingly being given broken, incomplete, or d-grade content (pvp, housing), and are told exactly what to do by the developers on a day to day basis: "Grind money, grind dungeons, but not that much, only once a day or once a week, and maybe in 3-6 months you'll be able to afford a half-assed guildhall system. If you're good livestock, we may even give you a personal pen that you won't be able to afford for yet another 3-6 months. Oh, and we're robbing your wallets again if you are doing too well compared to people who only started playing a week ago."

I'd say the community is a little worse off than the old Everquest community, which was a heavily embattled community pitted against a Nintendo-Hard game environment and a generally nonfunctional customer support department. That bred a tough, but tight, community by comparison to this kind of consumer farming.

As for the EVE Online community, well.. it's a game for spreadsheet mongers and sociopaths. One's always complaining (or preying) on the other, but they've found a happy flux as far as mending relations with CCP.

I'm a fan of this game, not a fan of the community that plays it. I just play, use DF to get things done and stay away from FC invites. Life is simpler for me that way.

Am I the only one who realizes that the topic creator is just using WoW as a reference and there is absolutely no reason to point out to the topic creator that the human condition he describes was not created by WoW??? I think he knows this. :confused:

The community fostered by World of Warcraft is no different than any other online gaming community of its contemporaries, or that existed before it. The vast majority of the playerbase is comprised of decent human beings who aren't looking for conflict and enjoy having positive experiences with others, and what's left is where you'll find your more unsavory types. World of Warcraft's community is, on the whole, rather incredible and has been the driving force in making it such a popular and successful game and we'd be lucky to have such a large community in XIV. The thing about large numbers to remember however is that things on both sides of the equation are going to scale. If only 1% of WoW's former 12 million subscribers were horrible, negative influences then that's still 120,000 people. That's a lot! Even for XIV, if only 1% of our population was comprised of total jerkwads we're still talking about thousands of people.

The important thing to remember is that for every 1 person you meet who seemed destined to ruin your day for no apparent reason, there are dozens more you've never met whom could become great friends or, at the very least, leave you feeling warm and fuzzy after a random duty.

Edit: I wanted to include, OP, that I know your posts were meant to serve as a reminder for others that they should be what they want to see in their community. I agree! In reading through the thread though I felt like this needed to be stated.

Dealing wih the WoW mentality is like interacting with people from New York. The come off arrogant, rude, loud and mean but it's just how they are. They if anything are extextremely proud passionate.

There's something that is missing here..

Communities in MMO's are comprised of five groups. Casuals (low game time), Hardcores (high game time), PvP'ers, and Raiders. These groups obviouly overlap. The fifth group is the developers, and that's really the knife in the kidney in XIV.

I kind of find it ironic that the OP is shaming elitism and then goes on to look down on a particular community.

ITT: someone hurt OP's feelings so he decides to post a bunch of stuff stereotyping people who advance in the game. Somebody get him a warm bottle and some preparation H.

It's too late for that, I'm 90% sure only about 15-30% of the people playing ARR are people who have been around since FFXI and that about 20% of those players played 1.0 and are legacy players now. The rest are just new to ARR and are head over heels in love with it.

That 70% player base that are new to ARR have come from other MMO's like Tera,Rift,WoW and other WoW cloned games because everything else out there is basically a WoW clone so what is it that they want for ARR? They want ARR to be the same as those other games because it's what they like so I'm sorry to inform you but your hopes for this community being anything other than like WoW or any other game like WoW are not very high.

The majority of this community already is becoming like WoW and players who care about the old Final Fantasy mechanics are vastly outnumbered now. Being one of those older Final Fantasy players I have to say, I am not impressed at all.

Listen, I am NOT downing WoW, I played for several years and enjoy the hell out of the game, I am comparing how SOME people act in WoW, is similar to here. Yes, I know this type of behavior is not limited or started with WoW. I am not trying to put anyone down, I just didn't want to experience that type of behavior on XIV. And no, no one hurt my feelings, these were just observations ive witnessed throughout normal gameplay. A little kindness and consideration towards others never hurts, ever, but some people just don't want to hear it. Im not here to change your minds, just throwing my 2 cents out there, this IS the official forum after all, and Dreadlockrasta, I am NOT stereotyping people who want to advance, im in the same category; im just asking that people not be douchewipes like you find in other MMO's. And you could do all that without blanketing the WoW community (ie. people that came from WoW) as the people you want to avoid, but you didn't. You don't get to claim high ground on this one.

The Blatant WoWphobia that grips other MMOs is just hilarious

If you want to change the world, try starting with the toon in the mirror. You look down on people who play WoW and blame them for any and everything. That is the very definition of elitist. The community in Wow has good people and bad, just like here. A person is every bit as capable of kindness and sunshine and light if they're a lvl 90 worgen druid, a level 75 tarutaru dark knight or a lvl 50 miqote with bubblegum hair. Chances are they're probably the same person. And those same people are just a scapable of being douchewipes who greet every imperfection with a slam against WoW. And sorry, saying "I'm not downing WoW" while repeatedly dowing WoW does not magically transform you words into something they are not.

Ok, so how am I continually downing WoW? Please be specific. Did I not say that I too play WoW? Did I not say I enjoy the game? I was using Wow as a COMMON BASE REFERENCE because it was the last MMO I played before this one. Some of you are just picking a fight where there is none. WoW is a great game, and it has some great people, but it, like any other MMO, has horrible people sometimes. This is a relatively new community, so I had only expressed my hopes that we could keep it fun and friendly. I now see that that was an impossibility from the get go. Some of you are taking things out of context. I love WoW, I just didn't love SOME of the people. If you were under the impression that I was dumping on WoW, get over it. I played for several years, I have five toons at 90, and I cleared the MoP content. So Im not sure where you are getting that I hate WoW and everything about it. If you still don't get that, or you just want to be obstinate, fine. But if you are attacking me because of some perceived slight on something that you enjoy, then are you any better? tell me true...

I also think that some of you were just reading the title of the thread, and then responding without reading all the posts. But I feel as if even if I had changed the title to something like, "Cant we all just get along?" some of you lot would have flamed me simply for daring to ask for common courtesy and kindness.
