This game is built around four-player party units. They cannot turn bard into a pure support job; there would be no place for them except on the fights where we would be required to have them for silence (and the drastic loss of DPS would make ADS a serious pain in the rear).
You can't have a support role with a four-player party unit. It has to be five or six.
Bards are DPS with utility via raid cooldowns. I could see Ranger being given more AoE and slightly better damage multipliers.
I originally hoped they would go the way of "bards => longbowmen of Gridania, rangers => Miqo'te hunters using shortbows", but I don't see it working anymore given how ARC and BRD are designed.
As much as I want Ranger Job it most likely won't arrive until Musketeer class is released since the posibility of Musketeer being Ranger's level 15 required side class is quite high.
For now we wait for Musketeer class release which is Yoshi-P's current priority for a future Major Update.
An idee in a good direction imo OP, tho nerfing bard's dps even more would have some realy punishing side effects as how the game is atm.
Removing brd for the time beeing, and change it to ranger (or something in that line), give a utility balance over all dps classes and bring back brd when the game is ready for an support role is what i would wish for.
Well we will see once Musketeer is released.
If handled properly they may prevent too much of the Archer population drop to Musketeer population due to the possibility of Musketeer's Job, or Jobs if they release both Musketeer 1st and 2nd job, is more DD focused. However, they could also release Archer's 2nd job at the sametime for the sake of preventing a large Archer population drop and to introduce something more DD focused for Archer.

Ranger's with more power?
i wonder if a skillshot based playstyle would work in this game.
Enough with nerf bard again. I'm sick some noob people still complain about bard.
Why you not asking SE to delete bard class if you hate it
There is no point to release another class like ranger that using the same weapon. Bard is already enough to cover it.
If you want another range dps, just ask them to make musketer that use gun.
Make RNG and make it super strong from ranged! Call it Musketeer, and make each attack take 1-3 seconds to use. Trade mobility for damage. Trade utility to keep your range at the higher dps rate. Then you can be a BLM with different animations . . . As much as we would all love some new jobs to come in, they need to be brought in properly, and it's VERY rare that anyone has a good idea for implementation.
I could see a buffing job coming soon, haste exists, enspells exist, spike spells exist, paralyze exists, but only for enemies right now... but at least they're there already.
Calm down there. Musketeer class will arrive later but seems most people haven't notice the 2 Jobs per class thing.
Archer still has his 2nd Job that needs to be released which is most likely Ranger Job or some other Job in FF series that would go with a Bow weapon user.
Still got to wait for Musketeer class release before that happens unless SE plans to release both Archer 2nd Job with Musketeer class and Musketeer's jobs.
I am confused... 2 Jobs per class.... Lnc gets Drg and.... Pgl gets Mnk and.... Mrd gets War and... Gla, Pld; Cnj, Whm; Thm, Blm. The only one that gets two is Arc, Smn and Sch and they have to share a stat distribution --which people hate.
Am I missing something?
Each class will eventually be given a 2nd Job but as of now they are not released.
Arcanist is the first Class to be given 2 Jobs. Eventually each current class will be given theirs but most likely we won't see them until new classes are released to serve as their level 15 required classes or 2nd cross-skill class.
Unless Yoshi-P has plans to expand Job cross-skills beyond 2 classes per Job.
That is like... light years away! But here's hoping. I also saw the movie in your signature as a late-night, might-as-well-put-something-on netflix watch, it was.. okay. I think Hildibrand would have improved it!
Add 2-3 support roles, Retweak all current content to 5 man..
whatever they decide to call archers 2nd job im hoping it will be a new pet class.
and that it has the ability to tame different open world pets, ie like wows hunter.
so many great animals in the game.
RIFT is actually a fairly prime example of a Support Role poorly implemented. Waiting for the Dungeon Finder to find that Support guy was atrocious, and getting a team of 5 before that tool was made was even worse.
I don't get why Bards aren't happy with how the Job functions. As a Monk, Scholar and Warrior, i LOVE having a skilled Bard in my party.
Every Job has a Role, something it's good at. Monk has exceptional continuous single target DPS. Black Mages have exceptional periods of burst damage. Dragoons are a good mix between the Black Mages burst and the Monks continuous DPS. Summoners are great at dealing a lot of constant damage to multiple targets at once.
The strength of the Bard is its ability to greatly improve the performance of everyone in your party, through resource regeneration or bonus damage with Requiem.
If you want to just do massive damage ranged hits, roll a Black Mage, don't try to force a Job to change to suit your desires. Leave the poor Bards alone to do what they're good at -_-
I'm baffled that some people think Bard will no longer classify as a DPS class if they exchange their personal damage for party wide DPS boost songs.
Depends on SE in the end. it could be light years or it could be only a few major updates away after all...

We will get something for Archer's 2nd Job but currently it is most likely Ranger.Quote:
GE- With ARR we’ll see Arcanist added with Summoner shortly after the game launches. Are there any other classes or jobs you’d like to see added? And will these be added in patches or expansions?
Yoshida- What I would like to see right?
First of all, we are planning a new race for an expansion pack. For the classes and jobs, we will introduce them through patches because all of the Legacy players have level 50 jobs anyway. When we introduce new classes and jobs we will probably increase the level cap at the same time.
About what I want to introduce- it’s more like what I think I have to introduce. Something related to guns because the (musketeer) guild in the game. Something related to that I think I have to introduce.
Also I do feel that scouting classes are lacking so I want to bring in Thief, Ninja and those that have to do with stealth. Also more casters like Blue Mage and Red Mage are something I would like to add.
Whatever the players want, I want too.
Bard is actually a Hybrid Job, despite people confusion for it being DD or Support, so it is actually both DD and Support.
Bard focus on performing DD but the skills Bard gets from its Job is for Supporting the group when needed. Think of Bard like that Supply Unit that you need to fight with your team while deploying supply boxes to help keep your group from running out of ammo.
They should turn Bards into healers =P
Lifelong Ranger in ffxi, happy with how bard in 2.0 has turned out, but I'd love a pure ranged dps class via bow/gun. I'm thinking we'll see musketeer instead of ranger, and I'm ok with that as long as it's a pure DPS class and not like Corsair was in 11.
Musketeer is a "class" a job from Musketeer is could potentially be Ranger...Now i'll start looking it up since i can't remember too well...but i could have sworn with the potential introduction of puppet master as an alternate job from Musketeer...but i'll look up anything i can now and edit it in when i find it.
so essentially because your dps numbers are slightly less now you want the whole class changed because your ego is hurt?
LOL
With the required amount of dps both dd slots need to do. Lowering damage on bard would cause it to be gimped in most 4 man duties. Unless you expect the other DD to carry you?
Hahahaha NO.
I've never liked the "Bard" playstyle, I avoided them in XI because I don't enjoy supporting... Ranger however, was insanely fun for me and considering there's no other Archery "JOB" in this game, I was forced to play a Bard.
So yea... if Musk is pure range damage that's cool, unfortunately I prefer bows over guns but I'll let that slide if it's a pure damage class.
Each job will retain the weapon of their class i believe. So if bard gets ranger, it will probably (to my own relief) be a bow-wielding class.
That said I just had an idea pop into my head today.
What if, bother Musketeer and Archer, get Ranger as one of their job options.
An Archer (30) Musketeer (15) becomes a Ranger but has Archer skills as core, picking up musketeer cross class skills.
While a Musketeer (30) Archer (15) also becomes a Ranger but with Musketeer skills as core, picking up archer cross class skills.
While an Archer and Musketeer will probably play differently, the Ranger job can be designed such that the 5 Ranger skills benefit both Archer and Musketeer.
And in the game, Rangers will be the masters of long ranged physical damage. The wear the same Ranger Artifact Armor, but some would be using Bows while other use guns.
Sadly this will not work since Jobs can only belong to 1 class.
However, there are still other options for Musketeer other than Corsair such as the Gunner and Machinist Jobs which are Jobs known to use guns as their main weapon.
Ranger will most likely go to Archer for 2nd Job due to Ranger's origins in the FF series being a Archer type class and how Archer class has already one of Ranger's Iconic skills being Barrage. Not only that but Ranger Job is known to be more DD focused version of Archer in the FF series which makes it more ideal to go with Archer class in FF14 since it focus more on improving Archer's bowmastery.
