What is the dev team up to today? Lets us see...

This is just an idea sparked by this comment by Lionix in the gathering thread:

It made me think of the DVD provided with one of the Guild Wars collectors editions where they showed you around the office and how the staff did what they do. I was going to suggest something like this as it'd be nice to see what goes on in the office, but then I thought why not go one better?

Wouldn't it be nice to have a couple of webcams set up in the FFXIV dev office to stream to a webcam section on the lodestone so we can see the dev team hard at work and perhaps even catch some sneaky peeks at things being worked on?

I'd like to suggest this be taken into consideration as I'm sure I'm not the only one who is curious about what goes on over there.

What do you think?

I think this is one of those things a lot of us would enjoy and appreciate, but I just don't think it is going to happen. Think of a time where you under-delivered something or messed up a project and had to fix it. Would you want people now to watch your every move going forward? I don't think so. Adds unnecessary pressure and opens them to (more) criticism. Additionally, I think the team at Guild Wars has something they are really proud of and they are happy to share that stuff. I don't think that is the situation here.

In a word, you're insane.

The dev team would be hounded at for work that is still in progress and not ready for release. The office workplace is not exactly the stuff of high adventure. Besides, I'm sure Japan has such things as MANAGERS to make sure they work in a timely fashion in nice, coherent, japanese.

Next you'll want bullwhips attached to robotic arms. Hanging swords on top of their keyboards. A running John Deere lawnmower in Bayohne's office!

I don't want them to feel as they are being watched 24/7 just to check if they are still working on XIV.

i would quit a job if i had cameras all around me that are connected to the internet or viewable for the public...
I would be happy with some more detailed and concrete answers and updates rather then seeing them work...

PC+ person before it isnt like... very interesting to watch anyways

Lol if they had webcams in the office then even if someone was working 8 hours straight and they stopped for a min to have a sip of coffee these boards would light up with people going mad about how SE are lazy and they sit around doing nothing all day.

I realise this is a bit tenuous of a link, but does anyone else wish there was a 'Live Eorzea' similar to 'Live Vana'diel' from back on the POL website in the day? I can remember installing ToAU and watching it as it followed the community piling into Aht Urghan and exploring the new areas.

It'd be neat to have a camera watching random dungeon groups and open areas of Eorzea (although this would be after they'd FILLED it with stuff, might be a ways off...)

This thread just made me think of that :shrugs:

This was suggested in our office too, we all pretty much unamimously said no. Reason 1 being we deal with sensitive information, and should not be viewable by anyone other than us and other employees.

I remember that. I was on Vent with friends the day that ToAU was going live, and we were all watching the test realm with the GM's pottering about in the new zones. It was awesome, used to love watching Vana'diel Live!

I remember this feature too, it was really cool. Watching people pottering around Bastok etc. Would be good to see a view from somewhere you wouldn't ordinarily see, too.

You people are getting desperate for info lol -- no game development company would do this, ours definitely wouldn't. The ones that have "live feeds from the studio" doesn't display any type of sensitive information or information about upcoming changes, they may display some material like models or let you listen into a music/voice acting session, but a constant live feed into devs offices is a definite nono.

Even when they post images from the dev office over on the XI side, they hide game information. (Blurred out/covered etc.)

While I agree that webcams are probably not a good idea, I did want to say that you have NO rights to privacy at a public work space. Privacy only extends to your personal property and to the bathroom.

This depends on the work place and state/national laws.

When I say "public" I don't mean anyone and their dog can enter. What I mean is that any space that is occupied by a company and it's staff is public and therefore the staff should not expect any kind of personal privacy. If SE decided to install public webcams there is nothing the staff could do about it.

Since at the time you posted this it was 9:00 at night at the SE offices, I don't think there would be much to see...unless you think they should be working 16 hours a day.
