Hey everyone! i have been wanting a Melee DPS for a while now. I had Monk at 50 since 1.0 and didnt play it much lately. I made a relic for S&G's for monk and then when CT came out i somehow got the Dragoon body piece.. Now i was wondering which is the better DPS.. Now i know that Skill plays alot into the DPS of a job. but which would be a better option. Please Discuss XD. BTW i have gear for both so thats not a issue.
Dragoons if you want to do burst damage. Monks if you want to do sustained damage. Both are viable.
Yea i have heard that lol. Just do not wanna get into a party and someone say.. "OH GOD A MONK!" or some such nonsense and feel like crap for choosing the not so bursty DPS.
both melee classes are good since i do have a dragoon and a monk both relic and geared but i like monk playstile better just for the added risk
It does seem more fluid to me, which is nice lol. tho im not sure if they upped GL uptime or something but i seem to have a easier time keeping it up. tho it might just be me getting better XD
Both are really competitive right now and I honestly think you can make a choice on something as trivial as whether you like spears or punches more or whether you like dragoon's slower, heavier, more methodical multicombos or monk's faster stance flowing combat.
The one thing Monk has going for it right now though is that there's significantly fewer of them compared to the number of dragoons, at least from my experience. Could change though with the perceived monk FOTM.
Whichever you like the most to play.
They play quite differently, DRG has a set of priorities/checklist while Monk follows his combo flow with the occasional OGCDs and dots.
Try out how they both play in a quick lv50 dungeon and see for yourself which playstyle suits you best.
I received a lot of flak from my friends for being a monk up until now, yet there were plenty situations where it was key, and now with 2.1 it's even more so the case. Just pick what you like, don't worry about feeling bad, that is silly.
Play whichever you enjoy the most. There isn't a single fight in the game, that I know of, that one performs so incredibly poorly in comparison that it'll cause you to wipe.
Monk has a higher skill ceiling and now awards you for it with amazing damage output, but things like Greased Lightning can be frustrating, especially on fights were you are on and off your target often. It's also a much more fast-paced job because of all of the innate skill speed, the pace is much more in line with a standard MMO (which I like). Monk attacks look super awesome too.
Dragoon is a bit more relaxed and has funner abilities (Jumps are great now) plus better AoE. Better burst damage too, though it won't quite match a Monk on single target fights longer than 30 secs.
Both jobs are in great shape at the moment though, so you can't really go wrong with either. If you prefer a faster, somewhat more challenging/rewarding playstyle, I say go Monk. If you prefer a more relaxed, bursty playstyle with funner "filler" abilities, go Dragoon.
In terms of performance, Monks deal probably around 8% more single target DPS than a Dragoon. Dragoons deal a lot more AOE DPS than a Monk, and probably more than a BLM in 2.1, until the DRG runs out of TP. Monks have more raid utility with a traited mantra and int debuff; Dragoons have more burst damage and resilience against mechanics.
In terms of aesthetics, most people (a) favor Dragoon gear, (b) like the general animations of both classes equally, (c) think Dragon Kick breakdancing is the best attack of any class short of caster Meteor LB3.
In terms of mechanics, Dragoons are simpler in 2.1 than prior. Monks are about the same in 2.1. Dragoons have fewer position checks, but their checks are more demanding. DoT maintenance is now trivial for DRGs in 2.1 with the clip changes. DoT maintenance for Monks is now "easy", but not as easy as it is for DRGs (although close to as easy). Monks have many more positionc hecks now, but each position failure is less penalizing compared to DRGs.
Most importantly, Dragoons use spears and Monks use fist weapons ... ?

Just wanted to chime in. I'm an i80 PLD switching to a melee dps to fix my coil team.
I am choosing MNK because as of right now:
1) I feel like a top-tier skilled monk has more impact than a top-tier skilled dragoon (utility and dps considered)
2) Monk is a little more unique...the play-style is not like any other class to me, and its quick and fun.
3) Punchy Punchy Kick Kick!
4) I can't be sure...but I think MNK is going to be the sub-class for NIN/THF... : D
MNk and DRG fill the exact same roll and the way content is delivered in this game it really doesn't matter what one is "better" since the difference will be small. DRG is a bit more restrictive and can be kinda a slave to rotation. While MNK is a bit free form but suffers from more movement and a slow build up.Both take about the same level of skill to play, if you suck at MNK you're not going to be magically good at DRG and vice-verca it all comes down to knowing you rotations and when and how to use them.
Do... both? You're going to level DRG anyway to get BfB, so...
they both play fun but ill agree Dragon kick is the best looking attack for any melee, even though that flower bloom from chaos thrust is not bad eather
but it all come downs wich class you feel more fluent with
If you like pvp too, go DRG .
