Tanking stat priority?

Hey guys. So i just started playing a few weeks ago and was wondering about evasion. I know i need vit, some dex, some str, even some mnd. If i am thinking wrong, please let me know. But how much do i really need evasion? It doesn't make sense that some War Garb gear pieces have more evasion stat on them than if i would buy a full plate piece. Do i really want to ignore evasion?

I'm not a tank but as a mage I still stack strength because it effects blocking. So definitely strength for your blocking and such. Mnd for those weapon skills which require mp I believe (i'm going off my bf right now, he tanks not me, but he doesn't talk in the forums), hopefully a die hard tank guy will come in and give you a rundown because they hated how awful my explanation was ^^ I'm not sure at all how useful dex is in tanking and I can't get a solid answer from anyone, so hopefully a supertank has some parser data.

I think you should ignore evasion, i think thats more for pug tank

you definetly want Vit for you HP base. Then u have to play around with ur STR for ur blocking rate and you MND for ur magic Def. Cap for stats is 174. Have fun ^^

cap stat is for rank50? and what do you think about evasion?

I use 174 VIT, 126 STR, and 40 MND, and use traits to get 10 more VIT and STR even though you can never notice it. On gear you are looking for defense, damage cuts, and HP, which makes the platemail set the best to wear for gladiator. VIT is only important for getting a large HP pool, defense and damage cuts are the real difference maker it seems. STR isn't so important since you should be doing Deflection->Aegis Boon->Sentinel->Deflection for melee mitigation (using 12 wield rate and self-preservation.) MND isn't so important since nothing can one hit kill you and the cures your mages have are so strong and cheap, and Emulate is a thousand times more convenient and effective.

That said, you want STR as your second highest stat for normal guarding outside of your boons, and for your heavy stabs. The 40 MND I have is really just left over points.

I always get mad when I evade because it's a wasted phalanx opportunity and any melee attacks coming at you should be doing 0 damage, getting absorbed, or be guarded with -66% damage taken. It's not really worth wearing goofy gear or using featherfoot to aim for evading attacks when gladiators mitigate so well and have no problem with enmity anyway. If you want to use cheap abilities for enmity look for Raging Strike, Ferocity, Hawk's Eye, and Foresight.

And yes, the cap for point allotment is 174 at rank 50.

war garbs from what i have seen, have a bit more evasion than full plate armors (looking at a chest piece currently). should i take the loss of some evasion to get the full plate chest piece with a bit more defense then?

Evasion is a stat that is detrimental for Gladiators. We thrive from getting hit, do not avoid it. Evading does not give you TP, it does not let you Phalanx, Jarring Strike is an off-class ability that we have no other use of the affinity trait for, and shields are tenfold more reliable and available. In the current state of the game there is absolutely no use for an evasion based Gladiator tank.

Haubergeons are for general use outside of tanking HNMs/Tarbh Uisge. Pretty much any moment where you are not spamming your shield rotation or emulating dodore. The STR does not help unless you are using the normal guard ability and spamming Heavy Stab.

Evasion should never even cross your mind when looking at gear.

VIT at the moment, as all other stats are 95% useless anyway.

dont do evasion as glad. u want to get hit, u want to block and use phalanx 2 for enmity. Leave evasion for pugilist.

Evasion is irrelevant, but using Featherfoot is nice sometimes. For example, when you see a big mob charging up a strong tp move, you can use Featherfoot to avoid it because they hit hard and you usually can't block TP moves anyway. In case you don't know, Featherfoot is a low level PGL ability, so it's pretty easy to get. It doesn't work everytime mind you, but it's always nice to evade that 1k move coming your way when you can. A good example is higher level moles: when they go underground I always use Featherfoot, and watch people in my party getting raped by the TP move with a smile; it hasn't failed me many times, so you see, it can be worth it.

As for stats, what the others said. Personally I have STR > VIT > DEX > MND but that's only because I solo a lot and I need the STR and DEX to do damage. I wouldn't care as much about DEX if I was tanking all the time. Once Paladin is released, I'll change and focus on tanking 100%.

Dacen here from Karnak, I'm new to the forums and leveling Gladiator as my main too. Thank you for the helpful information on this thread as I too was wondering about primary stats.

Does anyone know how many points should be put into Dexterity? After all, if you cant hit the mob, you cannot generate TP quickly, or enmity either.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you! I look forward to seeing you all around on the forums.

It might change thursday with the patch, but right now GLA does not melee when tanking. All stanmina goes for defensive/enmity actions so you only store TP with outmaneuver and raging strike > hawk's eye > Red Lotus (which has 100% acc) if you want to WS or just burn the TP with shield bash/phalanx.

So i'd say 70~80 DEX is more than enough for GLA. You can use it even lower if you going for max VIT (174)
