Alrighty, let's get down to it. This is just my idea. I'm not complaining about the prices of plots/land, it's just and idea I had and productive/constructive comments and/or criticism is gladly welcomed. However, if you're just here to complain I can't do anything to stop you so troll on...
Anyway, considering the uproar on housing, I've devised a plan that I think might actually work for both us, the players, as well as SE, whose main goal with housing is to remove a large amount of gil from the economy.. Here goes:
First off, level the playing field
Make housing prices EQUAL across all servers. I believe that prices on the "lowest tier" servers are actually decent as they aren't too expensive for the entry level house. (They could still be reduced a little, maybe half bringing the price to right at 1mil.) I believe that the highest tier "Prime-slot Mansions" should remain where they are because they will give the most hardcore FC's something to work toward.
Secondly, impose a tax
Someone else suggested this and it got me to thinking. I agree with this idea. If SE really wants to remove some hardcore gil from the people, do it in a way that everyone can afford. Let's start by having a 10% tax on EVERYTHING related to housing at the lowest tier of servers. Right now, the servers are grouped into 5 different tiers. As you go up in tier's to the second highest server, the tax would rise to something like... 15%. Creating a "tax progression" that goes up by 5% each Tier.
Tier 1 Servers: 10% tax (Asura / Belias / Brynhildr / Famfrit / Lich / Mateus / Unicorn / Yojimbo / Zalera / Zeromus)
Tier 2 Servers: 15% tax (Adamantoise / Alexander / Anima / Atomos / Cerberus / Coeurl / Exodus / Faerie / Gobli / Hades / Ixion / Kujata / Lamia / Malboro / Moogle / Pandaemonium / Phoenix / Typhon / Ultima / Valefor)
Tier 3 Servers: 20% tax (Bahamut / Behemoth / Cactuar / Carbuncle / Chocobo / Diabolos / Fenrir / Garuda / Gilgamesh / Ifrit / Leviathan / Mandragora / Midgardsormr / Odin / Ramuh / Shiva / Siren / Tiamat / Titan / Tonberry / Ultros)
Tier 4 Servers: 25% tax (Balmung / Excalibur / Hyperion / Ragnarok / Sargatanas / Aegis / Durandal / Gungnir / Masamune / Ridill)
*(I grouped the Tier 4 and Tier 5 servers together because I don't feel that the tax should ever be above 25%.. They could even start the tax out at 5% on the lower servers and keep the same grouping, still going up to 25% but anything above 25% becomes blatantly silly.)
This creates a unique way that SE could constantly drain money out of the economy while keeping prices somewhat decent for everyone. Also, it's something that they could easily monitor. As people buy more and more housing plots and items, more money is being drained out of the economy.
As time goes on, the amount of money they want to remove is now gone and they can decrease the tax rates on the higher tier servers to the point where every server is now at the same tax rate. They now have the choice of removing the tax altogether, or leaving it there as a constant way to remove money from the economy. Essentially, this gives SE a fool-proof way of maintaining their game's economy firsthand.
I think this would be good for the entire economy in general and once the economies balance out, it would become something like the fee you have to pay to sell stuff on the Market Board. Also, it gives ALL FC's something to work toward so that, even if they can't attain it right after they log into the game tomorrow, they can play with new content and know that after one to three months(not 6+ months) a big shiny house will be waiting for them! {Please look forward to it} ;)
Edit: I am currently okay with the housing prices. Yes, I am on Sargatanas and the prices are pretty steep. However, I know it's something that myself and my FC can work on. We are all 1.0 vets. The guys I play with I knew they entire 8 years I played FFXI. I plan on being here for a while and I'm not afraid to work for the house, even if it takes a year or more to obtain. Like I said, I'm not complaining. This thread is just a general idea to make housing more "Casual Friendly," as SE likes to say...

Heres a far better way to fix housing... Just dont make it cost gil. Make it cost FC points.
Edit: RMT cant farm for housing this way. There ya go.
Edit: Something like 500k for small House. 1mil for Med size house and 2mil for large FC house using only FC points.
Dont need to worry about people stealing off with Gil or really losing profit. Everyone wins.
If money is such an issue just have there be larger Market Board taxes, Teleport Fees, Rental Fees, Repair Fees on those Servers. Remove Shards from all quests under lv15. Fix the RMT Teleport Farming and contune to ban large amounts of gil on servers.
Keep doing that should fix the problem then just Open up all servers and remove the increased taxes. -
