looking for a new monitor to enjoy XIV 1080@1ms or 1440@5ms?

I'm looking to get a new monitor for FFXIV Christmas and was wondering which one i should go for... Now I would like to go with a 1440p, but their response time are 5ms and refresh rate 60hz.
Now would a 5ms vs 1/2ms matter much on ffxiv?

Here is what I got from Amazon thanks to my wife getting us a Prime account. FYI game looks awesome best price for 1ms 27in monitor with good name to go with that I found during my search. Hope its in your budget.

Might be easier to help out if you list the actual monitor itself and your graphic card :D

For example having 1440p might give you more real-estate on your screen but if your graphic card can't handle it you'll suffer FPS wise.

But strictly from a response rate POV in an MMO like FFXIV you wont notice the difference between 1ms and 5ms.

Im currently using a 1ms 144hz monitor. However I have also used a 2ms and 6ms monitor to play as well.

I have a GTX 660 ti, that's also why there is no point to go with a 144hz monitor since i never get more then 60fps @ max setting right??

In your situation I'd suggest sticking to the 1080p monitors however as i mentioned above ignoring everything else, you wont notice a difference between 5ms and 1ms especially not in FFXIV.

The games that would really gain from it are generally FPS running at a consistently high Frame Rate.

If you are aiming for a buttery smooth experience i'd invest in another 660 Ti if you arent capping the 60 FPS mark or go for a 120Hz 1080p monitor since they are becoming more affordable.

right, with regards to the FPS, you can select unlimited which goes as high as the cpu+gpu allows, if you can reach the 144 fps mark, then your monitor if its 144 hz can generate it, your currently playing on a 60 fps locked setting which you can change.
also, the ms when it comes to mmos doesnt matter a single bit, at all, the only time this point matters is if you play First person shooters at a extremely high lvl, by this you actually earn money doing so.
the 660ti will struggle at 2560x1440, thats a ton of pixels, even a 780 ti can be brought to its knees at such resolutions, the best monitors for mmos are ultrawide screens, 21:9 screens, they are 2560x1080 resolution but gives a insane screen real estate, which actually benefits mmo games more then anything else, though you still need a bit of graphics grunt with more vram

If i wanted to go the 1440p route, which gpu should i upgrade to or just get a 2nd 660ti?

But if not and end up doing the 2560x1080 monitor, any great monitor you can recommend?

to play at 1440 more comfortably at constant high FPS, a single better card is the better route, mostly due to Vram. this link http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU13/583, just fiddle with the benches shows how games fair in the benchmark fps, which i must add, doesnt translate into gameplay at times, doesnt have FF14 in there sadly.

this is ultrawide, party ui is on the smaller setting, but you get the idea, i am zoomed out

mostly high settings and sustaining at least 60 fps, doesnt drop in fights

2560x1440 is feasible, but it is more intense then this.

To run at 1440 and not have to set all the details to low requires some hefty CPU/GPU power. Your 660ti isnt going to cut it and neither will a pair of them in SLI.

I'm running a 4770K overclocked to 4.5 Ghz with 2 x 670 GTX's in SLI at 2560x1440 and even thats not enough in busy spots to maintain 60 FPS with the settings on Maximum.

Think about your budget before anything, because while 1440 looks amazing the cost to run it smoothly can be prohibitive to some.

This. Even in something like an FPS, you'll still struggle to see a difference, the difference will only increase peoples e-penis length, width and height.

Both have no ghosting or anything that I notice. They both look the same when playing FFXIV although the VS278Q-P is a lot nicer, resolution is the same on both monitors, but it gets stretched to fit the screen and is a plus! If I choose between the 2. I would get the VS278Q-P. If I was on a budget go with VH232H. I have never used a monitor that is 2560 x 1440. I play FFXIV on Radeon HD 7970 Ghz Edition so I could defiantly play in that resolution but the monitors that I've found in those resolutions are always to expensive. I would recommend just getting the biggest screen in 1920 x 1080. Whether it's 1ms or 5ms won't really matter but I don't recommend going over 5ms. If your video card can handle it go with the higher resolution. You will be happy but you're wallet wont.

Id go for the higher resolution but it seems like hes going for a smooth experience more so than more content on the screen. In which case with a 660 Ti his frame rate will suffer at 1440p. Im running a GTX 780 Ghz Edition and even I drop below 60 fps in cities with everything maxed at 1080p. Granted I dual screen and play in window mode.

Yes, I also agree with this statement. Running i5 @ 4220 MHz with a 660Ti overclocked to 1210 MHz I do cap on 60 FPS @1080, but in Mor Dhona and in places with a very long draw distance the FPS drops to as low as 40. While this isn't bad per say, it will be very noticable at higher resolutions. I do recommend a stronger GPU if you plan to go above 1080p.

Response time, like contrast, is a spec manufacturers completely make up, and should be ignored. A monitor with 12ms response time could have less ghosting than one with 5ms because the method of measurement is completely unstandardized.

It's nothing more than a marketing gimmick. By paying it any mind at all, you're falling into their trap. If you really want to learn about a monitor, you have to ignore the specs and look at real-world tests and impressions.

i'm using an asus 27 inch screen with 3d emitter build in. its a 144 hz screen and ha 1920x1080p as its max resolution. It is brilliant :)

I dont run a lot of 8 man's, I did only what I needed to so far for my relic +1 and for those I turned the settings down before going in to assure I'd keep a smooth framerate. 4 mans are pretty much smooth 60fps at Maximum other than perhaps some heavy effects fights with certain bosses that will dip a touch.

A lot also depends on what individual settings under graphics you are willing to turn off and live without. Disabling other people's spell effects can get you back a lot of FPS, as can disabling shadows. If you want a solid 60fps at Maximum settings, you'll need beefier hardware than even I'm running and thats some big $$ right there.

If your games don't go over 60 fps, I usually play all my games with vsync on just cause it makes the video card run cooler, then any monitor over 60hz is wasting your money, unless it is 3d monitor. 60 fps = 60 hz, 120 fps = 120 hz, if your monitor supports 120 hz. This is for the average user. Yes some first person shooter nuts do play with 120hz monitors and run the games at 120 fps but your video card will run a lot hotter and wont last as long. Unless your a pro first person shooter gamer then I'd just get a 60 hz monitor unless you think paying the extra money is worth it.

I went from a 2ms, 23in. LCD, to this 7ms, 30in. S-IPS LCD.
Ghosting was my chief worry with the upgrade. Thankfully, after close to two years I've yet to detect any perceivable difference in terms of ghosting in any of the FPS games I've tested, let alone my MMOGs of choice (it can be captured with a camera, as shown here...but that's with a camera :p ).

The others have provided sound advice in terms of fps loss. Upping your res to 1440p will tax your rig significantly. Definitely consider further upgrades if you would like to not only increase your res to 1440p, but to maintain a consistent 60fps with the same graphic settings you currently enjoy.

Ok so then forget about the 1440p till i upgrade my rig in the future... Now will my 660ti be ok with a 2560-1080 widescreen?

Bottom line is, if you want that 29' get it and you can always turn down the settings or buy a new video card down the road.

Struggle to see a difference?

You are talking about input lag right?....I think you'll find it's something you feel not see.

Not like it matters for games like ARR but for competitive games, just a tiny bit of input lag (or even a lack of any input lag if you're used to playing with some present) can throw off your game massively.

I'll let the comment about the width and length of people e-peen slide if that's what you're in to but please try not to post about things you know nothing about.

Well, about the 1 ms vs 5 ms thing; for FFXIV in specific, you won't notice the difference.
As someone who owns a 1080P 1 ms monitor and also this bad boy @ 1440P, however... I have to suggest you stay away from 1440P unless you plan to invest on a very powerful GPU/CPU.

I use a GTX 780 (Not the Ti version; bought prior to Ti being available -- still bitter about that!) and while it runs most games at 90 FPS or higher, some games will still bring it to it's knees.
FFXIV in particular does not; but keep in mind we're talking about a $500 USD+ GPU.
For crowded areas, it gets pretty nasty when you have that much being shown/process. Your CPU will also take a hit and hard.

Those are things to consider.
Personally? With your GPU I'd go for a 120 HZ monitor @ 1080P. You might not get 120 FPS on every game, but with a little tweaking on the graphics department, you can potentially reach it or get close to it.

Would that still work good with a 2560x1080 monitor and my 660ti ?

1ms vs 5ms is really not noticeable unless you are really really tuned in on the most frantic FPS around. for FFXIV the resolution will serve you better, but I offer yet another options.

I got a 21:9 monitor, now I can have my maps up and side bars etc and quest info, and still have a clean central view of the game. 21:9 is also cheating in a way because it does not give a distorted FOV, it actually just increases the rendered space over 1920. So you literally just get a wider image with no drawback. Eyefinity on the other hand causes a strange bubble looking distortion on the side monitors.

I'm sure if you just OC you cpu alittle and get the GTX 780ti and the monitor you want you'll be fine. I'm guessing that your PSU will power the 780ti? 500 watt or greater power supply with a minimum of 42 amps on the +12 volt rail?

The load would be lesser but it'd still be a pretty big load for a 660 Ti IMO.
I've never owned anything that resembles that (I am assuming you're refering to one of the AOC models?). So I am not sure what to tell you as far as FPS numbers. I'd personally stick to a regular 1920x1080 monitor to be safe; though I can see why you'd want the extra space (Hotbars/keys/UI components).

2560x1080 wont stress it much more than 1920x1080. Also getting that AOC on newegg with the 10% off code is an absolute steal. like 330$ so if money matters at all i would go that way.

I got this one a couple months ago $284 w/free shipping. But reading this thread kinda wish i went with an UltraWide (21:9) 2560 x 1080 5ms but would of probably been about extra $100.

You can pick up some really nice 2560x1440 29 inch screens off EBay if you're willing to risk getting one shipped in from Korea.

Picked up mine last year for $349 with free shipping, (Achieva Shimian), and its been perfect since day 1. Just had to add a US power cable to the brick and it works fine.

Sure you take a risk, but overall, people buying them had great luck if you check out some of the forum threads. that started up last year when someone discovered these things.

I do 2560 X 1600 and I can tell you once you go Hi rez you can never go back.

My 280X can maintain 60fps in ARR with hdr off and npc shadows off.

Don't have it in right now, to lazy to take heat sink apart but plan on putting in a Sunon 120mm x 25mm 3pin Hi-speed 4500 RPM 150CFM fan, forums say it can take it lol. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...tag=point09-20 It's a monster. Just make sure you get some kind of fan controller if you get that fast of a fan.

All I can say is don't go 16:9. 16:10 or bust.

I can not stand how the entire LCD industry when it comes to computer monitors over the last 5 years has all but put 16:10 out to the pasture. Who the hell wants LESS vertical real state? It pisses me off more when piss poor gaming companies fail to make their PC games PC ported console games properly for 16:10 (EA and Ubi the worst offenders).
