How do you guys feel about buying mounts and minions (when they have a online store for XIV) to help a good cause?
As FFXIV is an MMO with a monthly subscription, I truly hope they do not implement a cash shop that offers "vanity" items regardless of the cause.
I would rather just donate to a charity rather than donate to simply obtain a mount.
Didn't we have something like this in FFXI that gave you a moogle hat for donating? I really don't see why this would be a bad idea.
The only 'Cash Shop' they have is the MogStation. They are thinking of adding Fantasia as a GC item instead of a MogStation item to avoid the Cash Shop. The only things you can buy at the moment via MogStation are:
1) Digital CE Upgrade
2) World Transfer
3) Subscription
There are planned Optional Services coming in the future, but I don't know how they will work out. Perhaps it will be like adding an additional Fantasia per character for the account (and having it be like $5.00 / 500 Crysta?) instead of having you purchase Fantasia with GC Seals. They are also looking into an item to allow you to rename your character, which would probably fall here too.
Go back to WoW. That being said, I have tons of charities asking me for donations every year and I rather give local to places I know. And to SE if they are reading I make this plea, NO CASH SHOP IN FFXIV!!
If you need to be bribed in order to donate to a good cause, there's something wrong here.
No - don't want any kind of cash shop. I don't want to pay x amount of extra monies for mounts, minions, or stupid hats.
eh, you can already buy from some NPCs
if you mean cash shop for minion, then no
Only as a bonus item if you buy something else. Like a Lightning minion if buy one of the first 1000 Lightning Return game.
Why not just.. donate to a charity?
If you are buying an item in game... seems like charity is just a lame excuse you are using to feel good about RMT.
If you want to help people, then help people.
This game is going F2P or at least a "cash shop". Eventually it will. It's inevitable. They want this game to be super casual.
and when it does go F2P, I'm out.
Using WoW as an example, only a small portion of the money from their charity items goes to Make a Wish, the rest is taken as profit. The money that did get sent as charity goes into CEO pockets and advertisement. Make a Wish takes the credit but does none of the work. But you got delusional warm fuzzies and digital swag out of it so no big deal, yeah?
If you want to do good, volunteer and donate items, not money. If you want to feel good, throw your money at "charities".
No way. The type of people which only actually donate to causes to get something that says "I donated to this cause!" make me sick.
i would think of it as a donation since i usually donate to something once a month like St. annes orphanage. I mean its going to people in need then I can do my once a month good sumaritian thing, but i alway make sure i donate it to someone giving more than 70% if not all to the chairty
It has already been stated a year ago from Yoshi that the game will never go F2P. The game is solely backed by SE, and SE alone they didn't bring investors to front money or borrow money to make the game. So they have no reason to take FFXIV:ARR to a F2P model just to make money.

On top of that Yoshi defended the subscription model in an interview back six months ago. Between these two articles I don't see SE taking the game to F2P.

I like how a simple questions turns a thread into a prove your wrong/flame war/go back to wow thread. lol it was just a simple question.
I see no problems with this personally. There are several charities that my wife and I regularly donate to that we would never have heard of if it hadn't been promoted by something or someone we followed. So long as it's a non-discriminatory charity that doesn't end up using most of the donations for operational costs, then I'll gladly add one more to the list that we give to.
This was a special case for a catastrophic disaster which caused another catastrophic disaster which affected an entire nation as well as the operation of the game.
wouldn't hold your breath for $5. costs a lot more than that in most other MMOs.Quote:
(and having it be like $5.00 / 500 Crysta?)
If SE add cash shop to this game im leaving.
SE seem to be handing out mounts and minions like candy so I don't think they are going to make them purchasable in the foreseeable future. It does seem like they're contemplating a way to get the equivalent of a fantasia potion or name change through the Mog Station though.
Honestly, i wouldn't mind it at all. I regularly bought the make-a-wish pets when WoW had them on 'promotion'.
The allure of doing something like this isn't that strong for people that would normally donate to charities, but rather it's a way to bring in lots of money for a charity (as well as some profit for the main company) from all the people that would never donate to any charity otherwise; A few thousand, or perhaps hundred thousand donations of approx $5 (if the $10 item and 50% donation system is used) can amount to much more money than those of us who would normally donate to that charity hope to achieve.
The player gets a pet, mount or a vanity hat with no stats, while the company makes a little money and the charity gets money; which in turn makes yours, square's and a child's life just a little better. I don't see how anyone could argue against this kind of mutually beneficial situation with a straight face.
What does it matter why the charity ends up getting a little more money, shouldn't the main thing be that the charity gets money instead of getting money "for the right reasons"?
I don't think the children of "Make-A-Wish" would care if they got their wish because people with nothing but good in their heart gave from their paycheque or if square donated that same money after one of us bought a Cait-Sith: Blackmage edition non-combat pet; The end result is a child's life is a little better.
Well since it's not happening, who cares. Just sad that op and others need in-game items dangled in front of their face before they pull out their wallet, using charity as a smokescreen to get cheap items and not knowing that making, designing and developing mounts on square's side doesn't happen for free.
I wouldn't say it would never happen; Companies and people often say a lot of things would or wouldn't happen, and yet down the line they re-evaluate their position and make changes accordingly. Don't think for a moment that Square-Enix or Yoshida himself somehow has more integrity or conviction to never make changes on past positions down the road.
And though you seemingly don't know by your last remark, most "Item charities" in games split the cost of the purchase; A portion goes to the company to cover those design and development costs and then the rest goes to the charity that the promotion is offered for.
Though, it's very touching to know that you would rather condemn people for using "item charities" to get something as well as donate some to (normally) worthwhile groups instead of seeing the reality that the charity would be getting a rainfall of money they would never have gotten otherwise.
No thanks. I carefully research and choose which charities I give to. I don't want to support one that I dislike just because there is a minion that I simply must have attached to it. Also, I will probably quit if there is a cash shop added.
I don't have a problem with this idea in and of itself. Anytime new content is added to the game I'm happy. My problem is that it usually ends up taking away content from the main game so it can be sold in the cash shop. As an example look at world of warcraft. For years Wow gave out an achievement + a mini pet to everyone who logged on during their anniversary. The year the cash shop came out, that stopped, and those pets started showing up there instead. If a different team made the cash shop pets, and it didn't affect what was put into the game, I'd be all for it.
I wouldn't mind paying for mounts/pets and maybe some vanity gear since they are optional and as long as it doesn't out compete with the stuff we work hard to get then I am fine.
Absolutely not. I never want to see a cash shop for this game.
I'm on the fence on this one, it would depend on a few things for me: the
- The Chairty/Cause
- The cost of the item/what it was
- How much the split from the donation was e.g. is Square taking the bigger cut - cos' as much I love Square/FF if they were taking the bigger cut I'd say no
But I'm not entirely opposed to the idea, like say an official pink ribbon for AIDS research, or something for cancer research etc..
Saying that I do donate to cash charity when I can afford to but I tend to favour enviromental campaigns/animal charities myself.
Its the same as how Humble Bundles work, of course it'll be the best if everyone donates to charity voluntarily and regularly but truth is that it doesn't always happen, as such, on a results basis, offering products or goods in exchange for a monetary donation will without a doubt increase overall amount donated, it can also be viewed as their way of saying thanks to those who have donated.
I don't see it as a bad thing as charities ultimately needs the monetary contributions regardless of whether it was donated voluntarily or for exchange of digital goods
Having even vanity items for sale in P2P game is stupid. My subscription fee should be enough for them to include any extra things (like pets) in the game as it is. None of us are paying for x% of content and x% of payment items. I'd donate to the charity of my choice before I'd do it 'simply to get a vanity item and feel good about myself'.
Vanity items need not be original items, it can simply be a variant of an existing item.
The attitude towards vanity items is somewhat similar to players who despise game DLCs, the reality is that said item might not have seen the light of day without the particular motivation or purpose to create them in the first place, there is no indication or guarantee that the vanity item rewarded from a donation to charity will otherwise be created and made available to all.
Moreover, we already have cash bought digital items in game e.g CE in-game items and Dalamud minion from FFXIV soundtrack purchase
actually i don't care either way, if there was something cool, i'd buy it no matter what, and if FFXIV wanted me to donate cash for a virtual item, then why not?
I made this thread because of this.

as a community can we do this? And by the replies on this thread it would be hard.
