Nope, please see ballista ^^
Just guessing here but I doubt this game will ever have anything like the Ballista Royal...

"First genuine player versus player combat." Ballista was trash, and was hardly even considerable to be PvP. IMO of course.
It is not a PvP, yes, I am rolling on the floor laugh my ass off everytime a Monk ask a Ranger to fight him in meele. Nevertheless, it is a well thoughtout team based competition tournament, but using to KO a player for Gate Breach to score. It is much more fun than WoW's RBG and class balance is never an issue. Ballista requires more strategic play than standard PvP. I would like to see it back to FF14 someday.
Its instanced set fights. Your playing the wrong game if your looking for PvP
Yeah and they can have rankings and weekly tournaments in game if they wanted. Not saying it will be good, but it can be fun for people who want cool gear and something different than AK/WP runs.
Why not go straight back to FF6 on the SNES, where you could set control of some characters to controller 2? Most likely intended to let your kid sibling or "friend" have something to do while you played the game, but in reality would lead to instant backstabbing the second they realized they could target player 1's characters with that Fire 3 spell.
Some people seem to think if a player is fighting another player that sometimes that really isn't a player fighting another player simply based on the type of zone they are in. Mind boggling.
1) Arena fights (2.1 patch)
2) REALM VS REALM (2.2 / 2.3 patch) a la DaoC and on paper its amazing
Why people keep repeatin all that shit about "aaaw don't come here for pvp" when the game director specifically put dedicated ressources for a pvp system that won't alter pve. Been said one thousand times at least
trash thread, moving on now.
Pvp on FFXI was a joke, there was very little to no balancing done as far as job match ups went. If you were melee and went up against a rdm, you might as well go to the bathroom or something while he killed you because you weren't gonna get out of sleep/bind/paralyze/whatever on top of their nukes. I just hope that with ARR they do some PVP side balancing(as in do seperate balancing for jobs that only affects the jobs in pvp) so that whatever class(es) end up being op get fixed.
Yeah, Ballista was PvP.
Whether you liked it or not is immaterial. It was 'genuine' PvP.
RDM + DMG Mitigation gear + Phalanx + Protect + Stone Skin + Caccoon (Or even defender) = Melee hitting the rdm for about 5-10dmg a hit. maby pushing 100-120 with weaponskills. But you have factor in the regen and high hp cures now and endless mp. I could killed 2 decked out amano sams and relic mnk on my rdm without even having a remote issue back in the day in XI. IT really was as unbalanced as people say.
Try going against a aegis/dring/excal pld with / rdm now that is fun in xi... lol takes literally no dmg from anything (Nidhogg hits for 8dmg a hit... PVP melee literally hit for 0 without Stoneskin if all the buffs were up) and the tank hits you for massive unresistable dmg with Excal procs

And if you somehow don't thank that counts...

Full pvp game from SE with arena type fighting which includes FF characters in the game.
And by all means of technicality since these games are contained in other games in whole:

Hmm... Looks like the 4-5th genuine PvP to me...
anyone with a valid opinion knows, if we are talking about what is really PVP in a MMO, real PVP is anytime , anywhere ( no arenas, instances, mini games )
Name one game where this is in effect. No safe areas for new players at all, not even towns.
The only exception I could consider to this is EvE where you can technically kill a new player in 1.0 space but you will immediately be killed. Even then the new player is safe inside an NPC station.
Any time, any where. Yeah right.
I suppose if you count dueling as PvP... but then you are saying 1v1 dueling is PvP and RvRvR isn't.
The first genuine PvP combat in an FF series.. yeah, that's what was said about FFXI's PvP system. Ignored, hardly used. It's a joke. Much like this will be. FF fans could care less about PvP.
Haven't played it. Quick google search looks you could kill anyone, anywhere, but when you got killed by a player who's playing as law enforcement, you get put in jail for a time relative to the level difference between you and those you killed. One of the top results is someone who was in jail for 72 hours (apparently the time stops ticking when you log out) for killing lower level players.
So I guess that's an example that fits Zero's criteria. It's hardly common though, and I don't suppose he would like being locked out for a week's worth of play for doing 'PvP'.
Even if you didn't count Ballista, there were still instanced areas in FFXI you could 'rent' for a set time period to do PVP in, not sure how that wasn't 'genuine'.
I realize this game is doing the first 4-on-4 official thing, but...meh.
So far in FFXI the pvp was a joke.
Let's see if this is going to be any good.
Somehow i just can't see that happening though.
No, ballista was great, only the lack of reward / incentive is the reason for it not being successful. And the new Monstrosity pvp does have rewards, but they aren't worth the extreme difficulty.
Again, no. The PvP in XI was not a joke, the lack of reward and barriers to entry were the jokes.Quote:

Technically, the first big name MMO, Ultima Online, had this. Technically WoW has this except the "no safe areas" part (However, PvP can still take place in those areas by consent or if someone of the other faction does something to incite it like staging an attack on a major city0Quote:

An opinion, by default is never valid nor invalid.
It is subjective to what you agree or disagree with thrrefore a valid opinion does not exist it's either opinion or fact.
Pvp is player versus player, wether it is instanced, through a minigame or open world does not matter.
This has nothing to do with opinion, this is fact.
That your opinion is that they did not implement it the way you wanted does not change the fact that it is still pvp.
