Esuna and Detrimental Status Effects

I just started leveling CNJ a couple of days ago, and I got Esuna last night. I was wondering if there is an easier way to pick out the detrimental status effects other than mousing over players buffs until I recognize certain symbols for what they are?

Are there any tricks people use for see'ing these a bit easier?

If you look closely at status effects they generally appear to be pointing up or down. The detrimental effects point down. In general the negative ones tend to be harsher looking(?)... like blood red with a green boogie ;p

You really just have to learn the fights; enemies that can add an effect do so predictably, so its just a matter of knowing the fights and what the symbols mean.

Also, most effects that can be removed by Esuna/Leeches have a red background; big exception is Blood for Blood (which you'll just have to learn what it looks like so you don't waste an esuna on it)

Learn what bosses cause what types of debuffs. Then it's pretty easy to recognize.

Like Parcher said, most of them have a red background. One point of frustration is that some debuffs occasionally get cycled off of the party frames due to the person having so many buffs up at once (this is mostly a concern at level 50).

To add to this comment, the debuff that seems to be the one that is randomly placed on the party pane is the debuff that reduce healing effectiveness on the target. The first boss of Wanderer's Palace does this, as does the last boss of Adampor Keep. I can't think of any notable instance of healing efficiency reduction prior to this (but could be mistaken)

Almost all debuffs show with a red background as stated sometimes there is too many buffs up to see it in your pt screen and the only way to see it is if you have the party member targeted. Also just a quick hint if you get paralyzed arguably one of the worst possible status effects to a party be sure you Esuna yourself as whm first, then the tank and that you do this as quickly as possible as it can have pretty dire effects if a tank gets paralyzed at a criticle stun point or you get paralyzed when you are trying to save your tank from going down. Learn your bosses and what to expect be sure to keep your tank tops off but be aware of the battle and who the key players are. Example Ifrit Hardmode you need your BLM or SMN to use their limit break at a certain point to assure success if you only have one and you see their hp start to dip be sure you get them up as fast as possible to avoid a wipe.

This is yet another reason why I want addons. lol. I want a set of raid frames where I can control what buffs and debuffs appear. I don't need to know that your Company Action is active! xD

It may because im on PS3, but I don't recall being able to select which status effect Esuna removes. I think it just removes the most recent.

You can't select which status effect it removes. It seems to prioritize based on what it deems "most detrimental" and then by which debuff has the longest duration left.

Could be.. Just seems like I remember one time trying to Esuna something off a warrior, and pacification came up and removed that instead of the effect I was attempting to remove. Memory is fuzzy after so many hours though.. maybe Pacification is very detrimental lol.

If you were in an 8 man, maybe the other healer dispelled it first? If not, I'm not sure. I've never seen it take Pacification off over like, a healing status debuff, but maybe it prioritizes it over, say, Poison (though that seems silly, since Pacification is, what, a few seconds long?).

Yea pacification is usually gone by the time you notice/cast it lol, though as a side note I do try to always esuna it since war is my second main so I feel for them.

I'm pretty sure I was attempting to remove Paralysis when it did that. Not entirely sure, it's been a month or more since that happened. Now I just Esuna for anything I see pop up, don't pay much attention to the order it's removed. I think we at least confirmed you can't select which status effect to remove :D

Just hit Totorak, and the amount of Poison used by mobs in this dungeon is sickening, lol. And it stacks... nothing says **** you more than 2 people getting 3 stacks of Poison just as the pull starts, and you can only Esuna one off at a time, lol.

Wait til you hit Brayflox with the dragon boss - then you'll truly know the pain of multiple stacked poisons on a target. ; ;

Another way of noticing negative statuses from buffs is buffs usually have upward pointing arrows on them, with arrows on debuffs usually facing down. Not every buff/debuff is like this though, but those that do have it, it's a good way of telling them apart. :)

I just got to Brayflox a couple of days ago, and the Poison stacks on Aiatar don't really seem all that bad in all honesty. The Poison stacks so slowly it's rare to see anything more than 1. And on the rare occasion it hits 2, they can both be removed still with one Esuna.

Off topic, I've seen a bunch of new and interesting detrimental effects from Brayflox as a whole. It's a fun area on WHM. :)

When you get Esuna, you dont "need" to remove those debuff ASAP(None of the debuff are deadly at low lv) and youll see Poison most of the time.Youll get time to learn the debuf. And while some debuff got a redscreen behind, its not true for all debuff (Idk the name of the debuf but when you fight the Purple Bavarois adds , some of the debuff arent red) The best way to reconize them is that the icon will point downward and when its a buff its upward.

I noticed a trend where it seems like it takes off the least detrimental debuff off first, those who poo-poo spell speed, the fact i can cast an ensuna in a .5 seconds has saved me and my party few times

I filter my chat log to show only party text and status ailments. When someone is afflicted, it pops up in purple lettering and catches my eye. That especially useful if you don't know what all the icons mean. Also, remember only 5 icons will be displayed, so if the person has a lot of buffs on, the ailments icon might not show up.

Just keep in mind to remove debuffs from tanks first or someone who may die because of them. If you need to see the full buffs/debuffs on a party member then just click their name in party. Check any red colored icons first (for beginners). Once you have encountered most of the debuff icons and come to recognize them it becomes second nature. I haven't tried the chat filtering method yet for myself but that would make it a lot easier (especially if you are just starting out) so I suggest giving that a try. I have heard in passing that SE was gonna make it easier to see debuffs in later patches however, but only time will tell if that stands to be true. Good luck out there!

About priorities: weird, to me it always looked like it removed the last applied one first. In fact I had to rage many times when I was casting to remove something very urgent, and in that moment a new debuff hits and that's the removed one. And when there's a bunch all together, it always seemed to me to follow the order of display/application, thus making you dig your through light ones to get to the heavy one sometimes.

You'll get a lot better at identifying status effects as you play and get used to the game. It's much easier when you can relate certain statuses to specific enemies or fights and know what needs to be Esunaed and what can be left alone if it's not the most pressing matter at hand. Also you might learn the hard way what stuff can't be cleansed away. You may make similar mistakes to other healers in that you'll see a status that deals DoT that looks like, for example, an ice crystal. It might actually just be the status effect that comes from standing on the damaging ice field used by the dragon in Stone Vigil. Just take each dungeon one step at a time and build your mental enemy logs. If you have the extra time, it might even be beneficial to take notes on enemies and what they can do so you're not surprised when you see higher iterations of the same enemy.

There aren't many debuffs in the game to recognize, and you do get to see up to 4? affects in the party log.
Poison... prolly a good idea to Esuna this if you can
*various elemental DoT affects*... same as poison you will almost never see them though.
Slow... not much applies this, common place to see it is in Amdapor on demon wall. People need to stop standing in stuff! remove if you can
Paralyze... I see this more often solo than in group play. Remove it ASAP it stops movement/actions. You can't remove the para from ADS though.
Weighed Down... only time I remove this is if someone is doing slimes in Coil turn 1
Pacification... Warriors using Berzerk get this, it's a 5s debuff, that eats at MOST 2 GCDs (and then can still use Flash or oGCD actions). If your watching and can remove it asap go ahead otherwise it will wear off quickly.
Silence... Most times this is too short duration to see/react to
Stun... Most times this is also just too short to react to.


While Esuna and Lachesis are great spells, there is not currently an encounter (that I know of) where you actually NEED to use the spells. You can usually just wait out the debuff without worrying too much.

Disease on last AK boss, use multiple times throughout the fight. Also a debuff that's applied from Granite Gaol's on Titan fight (is this just HM?). Frostburn from multiple bosses, notable Chimera, and the last boss on Stone Vigil. They get plenty of use.

*Leeches.

Disease debuff on first and last bosses in AK. If someone gets the Slow on Demon Wall, you really need to get it off them, it's incredibly detrimental to their performance (and their survival). Frostburn on Chimera, Hydra. The Determination debuff on Titan HM.

Esuna and Leeches are very valuable, and if your healer has good reaction times, Silence, Stun, and Pacification are also easily removed.

Speaking about Leeches, I noticed while going over the SCH spell list that they do not acquire this spell until LVL. 40. Do they get anything to compensate for this with through fairies? Because, if not, running dungeons pre-40 as SCH main healing must be exceedingly frustrating not being able to remove ANY detrimental effects.

No, you get nothing before that, so no way to remove effects. But all in all apart from Bray, under 40, I can't remember much where cleansing is SO necessary...

This is true, Brayflox is the one that stood out to me the most, but there are little things that would really get to me in other zones as well. Occasional Paralyze from the Arhiman at the end of Haukke Manor. The Poison stacks in Totorak can be a little annoying if they stack to 3. The PDT debuff from the 1st boss in Qarn would kind of annoy me too. I guess the last two would be workable with a little extra healing, but it would still annoy the hell out of me.

Yeah maybe, but I never played Scholar myself so I don't know. I honestly, for example, thought Bray is an hell as SCH, since I already used to find it terrible to heal as a WHM, but my friend told me he enver had any problems with it as scholar so...

Honestly, I actually never had much trouble healing Brayflox, I found it rather fun with all the detrimental effects to remove. Though, for some reason 9/10 times, Qarn is providing to be a pain in my rear end for some reason... The first instance that has actually given me even a small hint of trouble.

Ah, I've always been one of the few persons in the world to like Qarn. Never had too much trouble with it and I like all the special puzzle mechanics. I guess I'm not a fun of alternation between esuna/heal spam until you run out of mana kind of battle :P

If it can be applied by Bad Breath, it can be removed with Esuna.

Esuna can remove other stuff, but the stuff that Bad Breath applies is generally what you will be seeing most often.

Lately I seem to see Final Sting deaths all the time, and no matter what I do I can't prevent it. Even trying to time Stoneskin if I think it's going to go off. It doesn't change the outcome. And for some reason the second boss in that zone always seems to want to rip my face off a lot, not to mention there seems to be an absurd amount of healing in that fight, which I can deal with, but when I'm getting punched in the face and pacified multiple times and people like to run out of range of cures it seems to make it that much harder.
