Square helps the little guy...?

Why Square Enix is inviting indies to explore its vault of intellectual property

This looks like it could be quite the boost to indie studios :D
Given them some established brand to work with to generate sales, possibly fund even better original IP indie game down the line and maybe inspire Square to revist some discontiued series.

Anyone else excited by this?
Any thoughts on what it could lead to on the new Andriod powered platforms down the line (since its PC only atm) or the Sony/Microsoft consoles?

Well, I'm hoping for a reboot of Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma (Had to EMU that one since it was never USA Released)... That's all Enix IP, though...

As for Square, we've got Bushido Blade, Brave Fencer Musashi, and many, many other games (like Xenogears) that were popular and could use some love and updating. Then if you go all the way back to Famicom/NES, you've got RAD RACER, including 3D Driving mode!

Ahh xenogears the game that was awesome, and then disc 2 happened. I call disc 2 the "we ran out of time and money" disc. It was supposed to be redone when the 5th xenosaga came out but the project was scrapped. Even though Xenosaga 3 was amazing

As much as I enjoyed everything about Xenogears, I really hope that doesn't get a revival. I can't imagine a different story to provide as much character involvement/development to it, nor gameplay to be improved upon (though that one could pass with a generic reuse of it). Unless the impossible is achieved, it'll just feel substandard by comparison. Xenosaga was hit or miss for a lot of it.

Personally, I'd enjoy a continuation of Einhander, as odd of a wanting as that is. I guess it's one of those things that you really can't go wrong with as it's mostly focused on gameplay than anything else. It'd be pretty comical if someone were to take up Bouncer though lol.

Sadly JP IP (FF, DQ, etc) is 'off-limits'... so that probably does mean Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross / Chrono Break* (never finished development...) won't be available...

On one hand I'm glad the JP IP is off limits to outside developers given the hit/miss nature of the recent FF games (X-2, XIII-2, XIV v.1 etc...) I dont think I could handles another sub-par FF game (god I hope Lightning Returns is good), also you have to consider that FF and DQ are two of Square's biggest own (in-house) titles I can see why they would want to take special care of those brands.

But I do hope for some interesting uses of SE's other IPs/assets from their aqquired studios like Edios and such, a cool new game in the Tomb Raider or Sleeping Dogs universes would be nice :D

I think this is smart on their part. There's a lot of terrible indie games out there - but there's also some extremely creative and well-done ones.

If this move works out well for them I wonder what that could mean for the future.

Einhander = Best shooter ever

Who else knew Square even made a shooter?

If it's not including JP IP's then whats the point. SE has two great companies into one. I for one would love to see a bust a groove 3 but it seems it might only be exclusive to Eidos IP.

Too bad no FF. Would be kind of neat to see FF13 or FF14 done in an old-school fashion, playing similar to FF4-FF6. Also wouldn't mind seeing a new Chrono, Mana, or FFT game. Or maybe a remake of Live-A-Live (+localization), Terranigma, or Robotrek with new features.

However it does say "Japanese IP (which includes Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest) will be off-limits initially," which could mean they might become available in the future.
