Making money at 50.

Hi everyone.

So I recently just hit 50 and decided to start my relic weapon quest... without knowing just exactly was required of it! I ended up spending most of my cash stack on the materia and weapon itself. Now I need to make some money.

Up until this point, all of my money making has obviously been from quests.

I haven't really leveled a craft much, infact its cost me money, not made it.

What can I farm at 50 for good money?

You can do levequests and guildhests for cash, as well as farm Wanderer's Palace (which you should do for mythology tokens anyway) for both the gil from the mobs, and philosophy tomestones to obtain crafting materials to sell. One trick I also recommend once you have some initial capital is to buy a set of the level 55 crafted gear (Preferably HQ so you're not noobing it up too much), and run WP with that. Once it's spiritbound, convert it into materia and sell that.

Well what you can farm at 50 will depend on your server. There are a few items crafters need that only drop from mobs in the open world. However, if your server is like mine you won't make much from doing that. Your best bet is to run some dungeons say Darkhold and need and greed the gear and sell it on the market. I just sold one piece for 55k today. Now that is worth your time. The best you could hope for farming the mobs I mentioned is 5-10k and it is a grind to get a stack. The other option is converting weapons and armour into materia after spirit binding them, some materia sells for a very good profit as you can tell from the purchases for your relic. The only other advice I can offer is find items not on the market board and supply them to the market, either through crafting or from NPC purchases.

What items from Darkhold are you talking about? The ones that crafters use?

Thats pretty crazy that farmed items arent worth anything really... Most of the dungeon drops that are used in crafting I've seen are only worth a couple gil. As for converting weapons and armor into materia... most of the time the materia I get from my weapons and armor are only worth a couple hundred gil and are worth far less than the cost of the converted item. I ended up actually selling about 40 materia to the vendor because they were only worth about 50-100gil a piece.

The drop I sold was a Coliseum Galerus. You need high level spirit bonding to get the higher level materia. Level one materia is very low value because it is very common. If you don't want to invest a lot or any gil into a DoL class you could start farming shards at level 1. Making gil in game is not easy but the best option is to find a lack of supply in the market and fill it. Last week I spent 15k gill on an HQ hammer because it was the only one and I had to have it for crafting progression. If you are the only one listing for that market item you set the price giving you some major control. But you will need to constantly adapt your strategy as the market is always changing, what brings in money now might not in the near future, as the market can quickly become saturated as others catch on to specific items holding value.

The reason I recommend spiritbinding the level 55 sets is because those are the only sane way to get tier IV materia, which sells for a lot. You'll commonly get Tier III materia though, which also sells for a decent bit (After all, buying some for your relic is part of the expenses you mentioned). That said, certain materia is worth more than another, and you can find yourself losing money if all you ever get is resistance materia. That said, I've found I generally make a profit.

Best way to make money is to level a Gathering class. You'll have tons of things to sell (not for much per each piece but it ads up). If you level a crating class, you'll be able to HQ crating materials and sell those back for a ton of profit as well.

Spiritbinding items and converting them into materia also works but feels like a waste of time to me. At least when levelling other classes, I get a secondary benefit after the gil. Doing FATEs to level other classes will also generate a lot of incidental gil, but i'm hoping the new dungeon experience will make them less of an obligation. Only two more weeks till 2.1!

Your looking for a static answer but I can not give you one. This is due to the fact that each server has different demands for goods.

What I can tell you is how to determine what to farm. To make any gil in this game you will need to sit down for a few minutes and do research. Luckily, FF14 ARR provides you with a pretty dangerous tool called the recent transactions history tool.

If you take a few minutes to look thru the market board using the recent transactions history, you can see how much of something sells for and how often it sells. These two things alone will be enough for starters to be able to pick out what to farm and sell. If you have no professions or gathering professions, look into things that can be farmed by killing npcs. What item you choose to farm will determine how you farm it as well.

It may take you awhile, but check the AH for some easy items to farm that sell well. I can go farm fleece outside Dragonhead and make 400g per fleece. They drop in stacks of 1-3 so it adds up quick. THis is just one example, there are many more!

I would agree. There is no set method. As a freshly minted lvl50 though, materia seems a good choice. You may also consider gathering or crafting while you queue. Gathering will have to be ground to lvl15 or higher before you can really obtain materials that sell. As a miner, alumen is in high demand for leatherworkers and weavers. Similarly, you can sell mats obtained from monsters such as aldgoat skin and diremite webs without leveling any other classes.

If you craft, look to sell stacks of hq items used in levequests. These items typically start from level 20 and allow you to turn in several times for up to 900% of the leve xp. Many players with money will often buy these items outright from the marketplace instead of crafting it themselves. Find out which items are used for those and just sell in stacks divisible by 3 (or more if you know how many are needed for the turn-in).

At lvl50, most of your expenditure is on materia, relic weapon pre-reqs, teleports, food, and repair. Food is entirely optional and is only possibly beneficial for Titan fights and beyond. Repair costs are also relatively low and can be gained by doing dungeons assuming you wipe only once or twice per run. If you need to, shout for a crafter to repair your gear. You might be expected to provide the dark matter and a small tip, but it should still be cheaper than paying the npc.

You should be earning tomes of philosophy and mythology for darklight gear or your Artifact2s. Depending on how much you are willing to grind at the dungeons, you have the option to sell your tomes of philosophy as crafting material. You can either buy the items and sell on the marketplace or auction it off at a "discount". In the case of the latter, you may shout/yell that you have 350 spare philos and give the buyer the choice of which mats you buy. I cannot recommend this method if you are trying to catch up in gear, but if you are waiting for others or have spare philos, it is an option.

It's no longer possible to request repairs from another player. Your only options are repairing it yourself, or having an NPC do it, with self-repairs a lot cheaper.

The best way to earn gil is also the most time consuming. Leveling every craft to 15 not that difficult and shouldn't cost a lot. At 15 you will get some good cross class skills for crafting HQ items. Level classes using trade leves, that will give you some steady gil income. Important point, never buy mats that you can make or gather. That is the benefit of leveling several crafts. Sell whatever surplus mats you have at a reasonable price. There is a good market for cross class mats. A lot of people don't want to have to level blacksmith just because they want to level weaver, so they will buy mats.

It's a slow process, but before long you will be surprised at how much gil you have

Never say never. Time is money, opportunity cost, gathering is only free if your time is worthless, etc. It's better to make intelligent and informed decisions about what to buy vs. what to make/gather than to just stick with a blanket strategy. It's going to take some pretty strange circumstances for me to make cotton thread again instead of just buying it from the Alchemist's guild, or even off the market boards. Also can't bring myself to spend hours mining my own silver ore when buying it, crafting it, and selling the results nets more gil/hour and is over much faster.

Well I figure time spent playing any game is time where I don't have anything better to do. To me gathering and crafting is fun. I understand a lot of people feel anything outside of raiding is a waste and crafting is a labor to earn gil. To me it's all just a game so do whatever is fun. I gave my perspective on crafting and you can give yours. But you can't tell me what to say or not say.

I've always thought this argument short sighted. It's short term gain vs long term gain. Long term gathering mats and leveling other crafts is more profitable. And it's an MMO. It's not a race. It's okay to do things slowly.

Sorry if it came off that way (trying to tell other people what to say). Maybe shoulda used a smiley or something. Just tossing out common expressions as a lead-in to what I was saying.

Enjoyment and long-term benefits are definitely considerations. I just don't think never buying mats you can craft or gather is a good idea, financially. If enjoyment and/or leveling are factors for you, and that makes not buying the mats worth your time, cool. But if it's making money you're interested in, I don't think following any blanket rule is a good idea. Weigh the factors, make decisions.

My view on whether to gather your own materials or buy them is rather simple: I do not view them as two parts of the same process, but as two entirely separate processes. First, I consider whether gathering the material would be worth it, mostly depending on how difficult it is to find for a decent price, and how easy it is for me to gather. After I make that decision, I decide whether it would be worthwhile to craft the item, which is pretty much deciding "Is this item worth more than the materials used to make it?"

For a lot of things, they're unprofitable if you buy the materials, but a common argument is that you can "make money if you gather the materials yourself." False. It is the act of gathering the materials that makes the money in that case, and crafting with them loses money. On the other hand, there are synths with very common materials, which in the time it took to gather you could have bought the materials AND done some things to earn the money back.

Of course, there's more than profit to consider when deciding which actions to take. The important thing is to consider each step separately and decide whether that step helps you in any way. Even if that help may be "It's more enjoyable."
