I decided to buy AH 48-50 gear so I wouldn't feel like I would be a hassle as a dps.
Was that a decently smart thing to do? Normally it is in all the MMO's I play(which is a lot btw).

It's ok, you will replace it soon, but you can spiritbond it and turn it into the materias.
probably a waste since you can get much better gear doing wanderer's palace and amdapor keep.

You did what???
Maw Haw
Lulz
Nub, doormat, jeez, how fail!
No, serious, it's pixels. If you like the gear, could afford it? m'eh, happy slaughtering.
If the armor looks nice, keep it for looks.
Buy the best gear you can till it can be replaced. Turn said gear into materia and you could make your money back :)
Much rather have people like you than someone come into Titan HM with level 25 ACCs because "none have dropped in WP"
Well, if you've been doing your Job quests the only pieces you really need to worry about for the time being is your body piece, weapon, shield (if a class/Job that can use one, ala GLA/PLD), and accessories.
The first level 45 quest gives you your first four pieces of Artifact Armour for that Job (hands, feet, legs and head), which is arguably the best set you can get at that point in the game. You don't get the body piece til the final (level 50) Job quest though, so you'll have to substitute it for a while with something else.
It's a free set of 'blue' gear though, so it's technically better than anything crafted or sold at a normal npc shop. Plus you'll actually look like that traditional Job as well so if you're an old-school FF like I am that's worth it alone. ;)
what a AH?
there an Auction House in game? where?
In the main market area of every starting town there are several 'Market Boards.' Interact with them to buy items from players. To sell items to players, summon your retainer from the nearby summoning bell and select one of the options to 'Sell items from...'
And yes, its clear that you know this and are being facetious about calling it an auction house, not a market board. At least I hope so given that you have a Relic+1 and over 2000 posts... But there are people reading this that would genuinely not know.
You did the right thing and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Although its nice to always have the best, its not actually needed in order to finish content.
The AF, Dark Light, etc. stuff you get easily and mostly free is good enough for almost all content. The only time you need to consider your equipment is for Titan and Coil.
Just make sure you soulbond it before giving it up for good. Probably get your money back 3 fold at least if you're lucky enough with converts. The thing is, your AF from quests at 45 should be better than any other equip for head/hands/leg/feet and then body at 50. If you haven't stopped to do your class quests, you "should" , I guess, if only because you get to wear them a short time as is.
