The GCD in this game puts me to sleep, and makes everything way too easy.
eh I got a 50 relic WHM as well. Skill juggling with a SLOW gcd still puts me to sleep.
I'm guessing you never played FFXI.
There's other MMOs more suited towards action style gameplay if that's what you're looking for.
Played FFXI, I was in a Dynamis Lord HNM LS that regularly claimed Nidhogg/Aspid/King Behemoth and farmed triggers for all the Sky Gods.
Had RDM/NIN/SAM/BLM/BRD/BST all at 75 when it was the cap, and had every other job above level 60. I was about 2 months away from Maats Cap and quit about 1/2 a year after they implemented Blue Mage and Corsair.
This isn't FFXI btw.
The answer is that they don't want gamepad users to be at a disadvantage in combat, what with having to switch cross hot bars back and forth to access all their skills. I'd try to find the post by Yoshi-P stating that as the reason, but the beta forums are dead. I think it was a post he made during phase 2.
Lmao @ people defending the GCD. Sorry, but this is 2013, nearly '14.
It makes the entire game feel boring, and PvP is going to beyond terrible with this slow combat.
Not sure what the year has to do with a difference of opinion. The GCD forces you to more strongly consider your moves, I do not see the issue with that. If I wanted more twitchy game play, I would find a different game that catered more to that liking.
i think was just hoping to gain some kind of "mmo street cred" with his "uber l337 list o'stuff". sorry but it was yawntastic attempt at epeen bravado at best. Get over yourself and move on if you feel the game is boring.
I've never seen pvp do anything for an mmo (when added after launch so as to appease the pvp minority) except ruin it.
Yeah, the better games are those that u keep pushing the same button -_-'. The GCD on FFXIV gives u time to think in the next action, if u are an ape u should play another game.
I never said age was an indicator, you did. All I said was FFXI was extremely slow. WoW has the exact same mechanics as this game. Threat, tank, healing, melee dps, ranged dps, caster dps with procs, it's all the same.
Maybe you should just see yourself out of the thread because you're making yourself look bad.
You don't press the same buttons in WoW, in THIS game you do. Literally all they're is to tanking is, spamming the same 3 buttons, and rotating in the same 4 cooldowns, which can all be macrod.
Healing is all about the same 5 healing spells over and over, Cure, Cure 2, Medica 1 and Medica 2, and regen on WHM. I think this is the "ape" game friend.
And 1.5 sec gcd gives you plenty of time to think, unless you're so slow you need a 2.5 second gcd to think, then this game would be perfect for you.
Also check this link out, even a guy who has basically cleared all content says the same right below "ANNOUNCEMENT", and he wrote a guide:

Where did I say age was an indicator? You'll have to quote me because looking back through my comments, I am not seeing it. I do see where you mention the age of FFXI as if it is somehow relevant quoted below.
And while FFXIV does have some some similar mechanics to WoW, that does not in any way mean there is a requirement that any of the similar mechanics be exactly the same, faster or slower.
C'mon guys, give it up - the GCD isn't changing and this same tired arguement has gotten beyond stale. FFXIV is an RPG, not an action-game where you button mash as fast as possible. SE tried that with 1.0's original battle system, and it failed, miserably (auto-attack was added in a patch, the stupid 'stamina gauge' was removed completely and abilities were changed radically to compensate). FFXI's battle system just dragged things out into monotony where your character was basically left on autoattack to build up TP and then occasionally use a weaponskill (or other ability).
Of course, there has to be a happy balance reached, but despite the flaws ARR's system isn't as bad as people are making it out to be.
I also qualified my comment of "similar mechanics" with "some". If you are going to attempt to trap me in a comment, please make sure you are correct before doing so, for your own benefit. While this particular mechanic does exist in both, you have given no substantial reason as to why it needs to be changed. Instead of trying to bicker with forum posters, why not write out a well thought out argument as to why it needs to be changed? Currently it seems as though you are simply reacting to a feeling without understanding why you feel the way you do. It seems very over-reactionary which is never a good standing in which to make change.
An argument with the shallow depth of simply, "too slow" is not one you seriously expect developers to base a change, is it?
lol I prefer ffxi's game play over this games, but that being said what bores me about this game is lack of Party interactivity that ffxi had, no skill chains or magic bursts, it's just spam skills, and for pld one combo over over again, plus a few other skills to maintain hate. The GCD doesn't bother me on this game, it's the lack of fun group events, so I'm waiting for more things to be added. But this is my opinion, which is what "I" like so if you disagree that's all you. you guys seem to get your panties in a bunch over an opinion. the OP has the right to think what he does, he'll either get over it or find something new to play. I know most of you don't agree with my views on the game which is fine. There's my 2 cents.
Either you make the game slow (like 1.0) or you make the game fast (like WoW, Rift etc). There is no middle thing that works.
The combat in this game is so slow, unresponsive and dull that it feels like an ancient type of game. The main problem isn't even the GCD (though, it plays a major role), the problem is delays and animation locks in the combat system itself. I can stand at one spot and wait until there's 0.5 sec left for the cast to finish, and the cast will still go off. When I cast my dots, there's a slight delay before they appear on the mob/boss. When I activate instant abilities, they feel like they really aren't instant.
Fast-paced thinking it's what it's all about these days, and this game fails so horribly at it. When PvP goes live, you'll be able to see every move that's being executed, because the combat is so slow and dull. There's no need for anticipation, because you already know what's going to happen. The combat sucks and doesn't fit in a modern MMO. If anything, it actually dumbs down the game by a lot. The slow combat is also why they have to nerf classes such as Bard because the rules of combat don't apply to them.
The combat in this game is literally the least engaging combat I've seen in any modern MMO. This isn't chess.
Imoye, you clearly haven't played FFXI then - there combat is literally so slow you could step away from the computer, leaving your character on autoattack, and come back a few minutes later after visiting the kitchen and bathroom and still be fine (you could easily chat with other players during combat too for this reason). ARR on the other hand is so fast paced that's virtually impossible.
Once again, as per my earlier comment, it seems you just want a buttonmash fest like a fighting game and are upset that ARR's combat isn't that. Well then, maybe you should evaluate your reasons for playing FFXIV then as it's obvious this game isn't for you, because FFXIV is not an action game - it's an RPG.
So... you just want to smash buttons every second with no logical planning out your skills with cooldowns.
Cool story bro. Go play a different game that takes little to no skill then instead of staying here and crying.
Why do people always try to change the game they are playing instead of finding a game that suits them. I have a few issues with the pace of this game, mostly having to do with difficulty (lack of),but the global cool down is not one of the issues I have.
It is endless entertainment however watching youtubers and streamers who hammer the living heck out of their keys tho, trying to force it go off maybe ..lol
I do not think the bulk of FF players are looking for a twitch game experience,it has always been more about tactics and patience to gather needed items and gear, both are things this game misses the mark on,but the GCD seems in place.
Because a 2 second GCD adds so much tactic, right? Seriously, that's not even an arguement.
For that to be true, you need to up it to 4-5 for anything to actually matter. The way it is now it adds nothing to the game.
THANK YOU, someone who finally realizes this as well. You have no idea how many time I've been shot down by people for simply stating that. Tanking is literally three buttons, always done in the same order with Flash thrown in.Pop CD when necessary. Healing is even more boring, on my Scholar I just manually spam my fairy's Embrace spell and toss out a Physick when needed. Obviously it gets a little more hectic in content thats a little more difficult like Titan or Coils but it basically boils down to pressing one or two buttons.
I think all the people defending it have only ever played XI and haven't experienced an MMO with a decent GCD. This isn't FF Tactics where you can examine the battlefield, predict where an enemy will be moving to and which attacks to use on which enemies. In this game you have your set DPS rotation with an instant cast while moving generally. Having a super long GCD doesn't force you to consider your next move. As a Scholar it is about 80% chance that my next ability will be Physick. Tank gets hit really hard, Adlo. As a DPS if you get forced to move the GCD doesn't give you time to consider your next move - you'll just try to use the ability you interrupted, or start your 3 attack combo again.
Literally the ONLY pre-planning I've experienced so far, where you actually have to time things properly is Titan HM as a healer. As a Scholar I have to pre-bubble people before stomps, MB, the jump, etc. If you get stuck in the GCD as stomps are starting it can be bad.
Personally, I've temporarily quit the game. I didn't rush, I leveled crafts and gathering classes and THEN I leveled my combat class to 50. I didn't FATE grind, I didn't power level with levequests. But I'm bored of farming AK and WP endlessly, and I'm getting bored of the healing in this game, the only fight being fun is Titan HM and that's because of mechanics, not class abilities. Yes, I played WoW but I have to say healing was fun. As opposed to my total of 4 heals and a few buffs/utility spells, a healer in WoW had an entire action bar full of just healing abilities, each with an individual use and role to fill, along with buffs. Same with tanking.
