about the swords of dalamud

So I was browsing the Libra Eorzea during some downtime and out of curiosity, I ended up checking the Enemies-tab.
Down there, there are some pretty odd places:
Ragnarok Central Core : T5, area with Twintania & the adds.
Ragnarok Drive Cylinder : T4 mobs
The Ragnarok : I guess T3 mobs

So I though, are we having all the legendary swords (ragnarok, excalibur etc.) as the areas for Binding Coil?

I wouldn't know.
Need to remember, however, that the Ragnarok has more meaning in XIV than just as a sword, it has been both a beast (FFVI), a summon (FFVI), a starship (FFVIII) and world-destroyer battleship (FFIX)

Considering we're dealing with cores, drive cylinders, and that it used to be in space, my first thought is actually the spaceship.

Ragnarok was also the beast that destroyed Cocoon in XIII.

Keep in mind that Ragnarok is also an important event in Norse mythology, somewhat similar to the apocalypse (although the world is said to be reborn afterwards).

In fact, I can only find references for Ragnarok as sword in various games (and anime/manga, possibly fantasy literature but not sure about that).

I just need to put this in here... But while the Ragnarok is an event the cycle in which it happens is called the cycle of Apocatastasis and Epkyrosis...
No you go to your Black Mage and check your skills, one that grants you elemental defense named Apocatastasis (the time in which the world returns to it's original form) and when a person can't be buffed by it it has a debuff called Epkyrosis (the time in which the world is destroyed. Ragnarok is essentially the movement from Apocatastasis into Epkyrosis)

I could have gotten some details wront from there but...

it was the airship/spaceship in FFVIII - "Lagunarock" in the EU version, which can very well be a bad transposition of 'Ragnarok' (given the japanese pronounciation of Ls and Rs, i think some adaptor thought to reverse the Rs into Ls... I call for inaccuracy;))

I don't actually think the locations we see in Coil are the swords/spears. The craters at each of the Coil entrances (there are two others already in the game if you look closely) are made by actual chunks of the outer shell. The swords/spears are much much larger and few are actually anywhere near playable regions at the moment... only one I can think of off the top of my head is the one just on the edge of Mor Dhona.

I have a feeling the objects impaled through Dalamud will serve a greater purpose later on, especially since they seem to be directly linked to the Twelve (there are twelve of them and each represents one of the 'gods' as shown in the End of an Era video).

Honestly to me Dalmund looked a lot like the spell that was being cast on Bahamut to lock him away at the end of 1.0. The 12 God symbols turned into swords and it started to look like a moon.

I'm fairly certain that the structure built by the Allag and the structure we see when the Twelve try to re-trap him are very differing things. The former was a complex machine, whereas the second is... a complicated matter. Louisoix harnessed the strength of the Twelve and it seems like they were responding to prayers that Dalamud be put back where it belongs. They may have just been answering the prayers very specifically. Regardless of what this manifestation of the Twelve was (I have my own theories, but it's a little baseless at this time to claim that the Twelve don't exist as we conceive of them and he was just harnessing prayer power to bend aether to his will), it wasn't rebuilding the Allag magitek as much as just trapping Bahamut. The swords on Aether-Dalamud bore unique symbols - but the original ones seem pretty uniform from what I can tell. You've got your two polar "key" pieces and a bunch of sticks. Image below.

Thank you moose I never noticed the difference in the waiting cutscene. The lore team keeps saying what is a God other then just an abnormal mortal given time for his story to become real and making him/her a God, to me this means the Gods aren't real, however the people of Earozea believe them to be so who anyone who is abnorm. strong becomes a physical manifest of the God like back in the Greek days. I ment in a since that I found it int. that the spell seemed to trap Bahamut in the same way that dalmund did. in a sphere with 12 locks pos. very similiarly. Considering that the allag were very tech. and magic. advanced I wouldn't be surprised if dalmund was a 2 part seal 1 being the spell first and 2 being the physical structure so that the ather is no longer drained from the land and can be restored. Or maybe the built dalmund after being inspired by the spell but knew that the spell could cause their own destruction? I'm sure you have theorys that have a lot more info. behind them.

What if the Twelve doesn't exist (really? XD) and the swords called by Louisoix are only a form of aether absorbed from everyone who prayed?

I don't remember ever seeing Lagunarock in the original nor the Platinum Edition EU versions of the game I've owned.

Ooooh, you just pointed out some interesting details I had not seen yet. Thanks!

I remember yoshi-p saying that there are keys and they all over eorzea. You have to get all 12 keys which mean turn 1-5 was to get the first key which you do at the end if i remember right. Meaning the next step in the mission is to find the other keys.

I think you misunderstood me.

The locations you describe are not 'sword' impact sites, they're simply where pieces of rubble landed. The burning wall, boulder downs, etc. were just created by very large pieces of Dalamud's shell. The swords themselves are all intact and all have a very similar design with that electric blue magitek running through the middle. The one off the edge of Mor Dhona is instantly recognisable as it matches the ones we see in the End of an Era video. It also stands very very tall above the ground (much larger than the rubble in the impact sites for the Binding Coil entrances). That's why I'm quite sure that the coil dungeons aren't taking place inside those swords but rather just inside small fragments of Dalamud itself.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Take Boulder Downs, for example. There is something impaled into the centre of that formation, which is long and straight, suggesting they may have been impaled deep into the ground. It is likely the tip of one such "key".

While the coil may be occuring in various chambers related to Dalamud debris, it is highly plausible that these are partially in and around the spikes. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Any chance there is a source for the 12 key discussion. That sounds very interesting, i'd love to read more.

Ragnarok isn't the big sword like thing that falls from the sky before bahamut got out?

Seems obvious to me that T2-4 takes place on one of the swords. Beating T1 activates a hexagonal elevator that descends to T2. T2 takes place atop the "crossguard" of one of the swords, just watch the intro video panning across it and looking up the hilt. After beating ADS you descent to a path leading inside the crossguard, making me believe T3 occurs within the crossguard itself. T4 is a 7-minute joyride down the blade on an elevator. The elevator descends to a stop at the hand (T5). How we end up in Thanalan going straight down? dunno.

However, T1-5 all take place in enormous caverns coated in corrupted crystals. I can't help but think that those caverns are cysts formed by the planet to contain the corruption (i.e. bahamut's parts + dalamud bits) within, and the bubbles we see above ground are incomplete formations of a cyst due to the respective object being only partially buried. Most of the swords appear to be featureless javelins that could have punctured the surface with very little initial trauma, leading to very little crystal malformation so we wouldn't even know something was underfoot.

Well we know that Allagans were incredibly advanced, so it is possible that Ragnarok is their technological equivalent of the spell that Lou was trying to cast. Whereas he relied on raw magic and the aether, they constructed a giant machine that would emulate the effects and contain an otherwise uncontainable power. This would fit in with FF usual usage of Ragnarok (an object to hold great power (swords/ships/etc)) as well as the shared symbolism between the summoning of the 12 in the video and the technology.

Bahamut was released from Dalamud, but who put him there in the first place?
