My beloved warrior was forced to be tank and now DK no thanks
why do you belive dark knight will be a tank and where did you actually hear that we will actually see a dark knight job any time soon?
Right. There's no possible way they can make a job do something different than what the base class does. That certainly has not been done with any second job currently in the game right now, and can't possibly be done for any future jobs.
Nope.
I think he's operating off the assumption that it will branch from the Gladiator class like Paladin does. Even then, however, there is not evidence to support that it would be a tank job. Both Summoner (DD) and Scholar (Healer) come from the Arcanist (DD) class.
There is no reason that Paladin (Tank) and Dark Knight (DD) can't come from the Gladiator (Tank) class. If anything, this would be a great DPS with both damage and survival skills from Gladiator.
I am the ONLY ONE who would like Dark Knight as a damage/life absorption tank compared to bland DPS? (Note, differs from Wars Self Heals/Huge HP pool)
We need dark knights with scythes. SCYTHES! Beastmaster can spawn from a scythe class as well, can't wait to see the sheep AF again.
while we are on the subject DO NOT MAKE NINJA A TANK. that is all.
Considering the marauder/warrior storyline, I am only guessing that Dark Knight will stem from Marauder -- not Gladiator. I don't see it being a tank, but I do see it capable of taking heavy hits (if ever needed). Of course... this is all speculation. We won't know until it's released, blah blah blah.
SE originally intended ninja to be a DPS in FFXI, but it was the community that found ways to 'turn ninja into a tank'. Eventually SE decided to follow the lead of the community, and made ninja more 'tanking friendly'. I could see ninja being the dps counterpart of a samurai tank (two jobs branching from the same class).
Why wouldn't it be..? Even in other FF games (Won't mention XI since I know how this community gets) they weren't "tanky" in the generalized sense, but Yoshida is going the more western MMORPG approach with class design, so it's not really the same style FF. So it's not odd to expect it to be a tank class just because of that.
Yeah, but they are a pure DPS class. I would understand it if jobs could fulfill two or more roles, but they are limited to one in ARR. FF series has DK as DPS. Ironically, you actually sacrifice HP to do more dmg. The complete opposite of mitigation/tanking. That would be akin to saying Dragoon could also be a tank.
You're not the first person i saw say this.. but why are you guys assuming it would come from Gladiator? Dark Knights generally use 2 handed weapons it would probably spawn from a Marauder(30) with a Thaumaturge(15) sub if I had to make a guess.
I mean it's all guess work at this point, but given to how Dark Knights have been treated in the past, I'd guess Warrior over Gladiator.
and after all i think the OP is only fearing DK to be tank because he belives WAR was actually forced into being a tank, while in older FF games WARs & Knights have practically shared the same role, just with different skill sets.
i'm not saying it's impossible for DK to end up being a tank, but it sounds rather delusional thinking about the DKs role.and that is to be a suicide bomber that casts black magic, simple as that
I don't remember Cecil ever having a shield as a Dark Knight and he is the Iconic Dark Knight. He used a Sword yes, but no shield. (I personally never equipped him with one.) and Dissidia he certainly did not use a shield.) There were some generic Dark Knights in Tactics that weren't even really Dark Knights in the Tactics games they were more Paladins with Blue Mage Skills, I don't really count them, since everyone thinks of Cecil, and his skill set.
(Hell even Leon in FF2 did not use a shield... soooo yeah the Iconic DKs do not use shields.)
I mean if we're counting the tactic ones (which again weren't really even DKs..) then sure.
You are 100% incorrect. http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Cecil_Harvey
His sprite didn't have a shield as Dark Knight, but he certainly equipped them.
Specifically, Dark Shield and Demon Shield.
Given how DRK has been in past installments, a single-handed sword is most reasonable. Only FFXI has treated them as a true two-hander class. Even Cecil was a one-hander with the occasional two-handed stance.
There are numerous shield designs you could easily give to a DRK without hurting the job.
Yet 90% of art with Cecil as a paladin also has him with no shield. Nor does his sprite display a shield. That kinda poops on your theory of concept art.
I personally don't care either way what they do with DRK. I'm just a FFIV-tard and had to comment on the Cecil lines. :)
Am I the only one that wants to see DARK KNIGHT as a healer?
I'd like a DK tank, but honestly warrior is too much like the life-leech already.
Still, More tanks is more fun!
I certainly agree that the one hander without a shield would be great, but they'd need to make a new base class for it then or somehow replace Shield Bash and Shield Swipe with Pommel Strike and Flat Blade or something.
I mean, if we wanted to get technical, I suppose you could release a single-sword, no-shield class like Fencer and have that branch into RDM and DRK without really messing anything up.
The way he spoke of it in this interview and others Yoshida seems to be leaning towards making Dark Knight a dps job for Gladiator. As he states certain future jobs may highly modify their base class abilities to make them better suited for other roles.
So future Gladiator/Marauder jobs could very easily be dps, its almost certain in fact.
Personally I'm hoping the tank class is a dodge/parry/agility based tank.
did everyone forget Dark knight in FF10-2 .... Huge swords
Except it was in its original form:

Its bad enough that they made Bard an archer extension. Should have been its own caster class. Summoners should use whips too.
Not really sure how they'll do Dark Knight, but I'm pretty certain its not going to be traditional.
I still don't see it likely. A lot of people think that Dark Knight HAS to come from Gladiator because DRK and PLD have always been the yin and yang of each other, but then we could argue that the same goes for White Mage and Black Mage. Yet, they do not share the root class, so why should DRK and PLD? True, Cecil had a shield and sword, but that, as far as I'm aware (forgive me, I haven't played IV in at least 15 years) that was deeply related to the fact that Cecil's plot rounded around him being both a Paladin and a Dark Knight. A change of weapon would've been off. Throughout the rest of the Final Fantasy series, DRK was always displayed with two-handed weapons. And I hope that is what it will stay as.
Yeah it was. Dark knights, were essentially anti-paladins.

I agree, and while I personally would like to see the DRK soul branch from Gladiator, I have to wonder what our rotation would be like. We couldn't use rage of halone combos or we'd pull off the paladin, and hitting fast blade/riot blade over and over doesn't sound as appealing.
Gladiator itself though does have access to a lot of useful DPS cross class abilities, so I guess depending on what other class they let us use it might be interesting enough. If I had to guess, I'd say they'd limit us to GLA/THM/LNC.
That would maybe give us access to abilities like:
Blood for Blood
Invigorate
Impulse Drive
Life Surge
Swiftcast
Scathe
Aetherial Manipulation (I wish)
And to the people saying it can't come from glad because they have a shield... well, what's so hard to believe about the DRK soul restricting you from equipping one. Unequip your shield and notice how exposed you feel.
The 1h swords already look pretty huge...

You could also say that because of FFIV where Cecil, a Dark Knight becomes a Paladin, they already have an established connection between the two. Who's to say a Paladin can't become a Dark Knight.
Not that its a part of the OP but wouldnt it make sense to branch off Marauder? i know other game lore has a character turn from a DRK into a PLD but that wouldnt fit the current lore of FFXIV.. so you complete the GLD storyline, i cannot remember exactly what happens but basically you save the day as a do gooder and then what someone approaches you and says "hey man, be bad for once" i dunno.. i mean i guess you could be approached by the bad guys you are fighting..
but seen as MRD is all about power and getting stronger.. to me.. in a lore sense it would make more sense for it to branch from that..
earlier they mentioned that new advanced jobs could appear that require more than one job to use.. WAR + BLM = DRK ?
Who knows what they'll do when they eventually branch some more classes off. The trouble with Gladiator in particular is that all of it's abilities are geared towards tanking so I'm not really sure where they can go from there other than to another tank job. But conversely something like Conjurer can easily be turned into a DPS/Healer hybrid job, maybe Geomancer or something.
Personally I think classes should have been scrapped in ARR or branched off at a much earlier level to allow more diversity but it seems it's too late for that.
