Have I missed the boat?

So, I played some in Beta and was ready to charge into the game at launch, level up somewhat quickly, and learn the end game content while everyone else was still feeling their way through it as well. Sadly though, REAL LIFE HAPPENED (!!) and I'm way behind the herd. I'm only 47 and I dont get to play nearly as much as I'd like.

It seems like most people have the level 50+ stuff down to a science and all I ever hear are groups wanting people to be geared and know the fights. I guess what I'm wondering is if there's still a place in end game for new players and if you more experienced folks have any advice on how to prepare myself for it.

Always a place for new people, but be ready to fight those who expect too much. Granted 2.1 has some changes that might help. Take most at face value, and don't be afraid to form your own groups to play at a slower pace.

I run dungeons a lot, leveling up different jobs - and most of the time there are new people to the dungeons. A lot of Free Companies are still recruiting people with the promise of helping level them up. My highest DoW/M is 47 (I started off crafting/gathering) and I'm not worried about rushing to 50 yet. Sales of the game are still good.

I wouldn't worry about it really, there's still plenty of time to start mindlessly grinding end-game stuff.

You're not late haha there's a lot disparity even on Balmung... hit me up if you need anything. Names is Dankz Greenleaf... usually on weeknights/weekends (EST)

I would say the best place for learning, is either shout yourself for a new group, a nice free company, or duty finder. Most people who want a fast end game experience shout at the moment.

But new people are coming in all the time so it's not impossible, just more work to find new people on the end content, since the end gamers do the same stuff.

Not late at all. There are no place for you in the progression parties but you can make your own.

For example, with everyone looking for "geared" people in my FC to run their AK/WP and stuff, I purposefully advertise "slow WP run".

It will be even easier to find a party that matches your goals in 2.1, supposedly, with the party matching bulletin board.

I never join them shouts even though I have the gear and better for them. I stick to Duty Finder for The Wanderer's Palace, and 9/10 I get a decent party. Fast philosophy points, 100 in 25mins with an average party or faster if you get really lucky. You will soon be raking in points to spend on armour. I don't like the e-hero shouts anyway "Gear check, I will cry like a baby if you don't haz 1337 gear" 50% of the times these players are useless anyway despite the gear they accumulate.
You will get there fast enough OP no problems :D & Good luck to you.

Just remember, full DL does not equal skill, anyone can run WP or AK 30+ times for a Darklight Set :)

Look to start in WP, maybe pick up the Warlock Set and a Darklight Weapon from the boss.

Isn't this game less than 2 months old? You're being ridiculous. Not all of us rush to end-game. Some of us realize that end-game is just to keep players playing as it increases e-peen size.

As others have also offered already, feel free to contact me in game if you want to run a dungeon of any level. I really hate the speed runs, and luckily I managed to get full darklight and relic before speed runs became the norm, but I've really hardly done any dungeons since.

If you were on my server, I would offer up my help as well. As it was already shown by a few posters before me, there are still plenty of people who enjoy creating a community where people still help others. Don't be discouraged by the over geared speed run shouters as this doesn't represent the community as a whole. I understand the reason people do it that way...but I don't stress if I have to take it slower to help some newer or lesser geared players improve. All of my PLD gear is DL & AF2 with Relic +1 & I don't care one way or another about speed runs. Eight runs a week, even if they are a bit slow, is still just over 1 run a day...no big deal.

I have a Legacy character from 1.0, participated in the Alpha and all four phases of the Beta, had early access, and I'm still not quite 50 yet (GLA/PLD 49 and CNJ/WHM 45 are my two highest classes/Jobs), and I haven't even finished the main storyline yet, as I've deliberately taken it slow and steady so as not to burn out like so many others have done and complain endlessly about. And to be honest, I have virtuially zero interest in so called 'end-game' - endgame never interested me in FFXI either and I was never thought of as a 'bad' player for making such a choice. How fast you play the game is up to you.

Really, don't feel bad about stopping to smell the roses once in a while - the detail in the game is simply staggering. :)

Agreed. The reality though is that it's very likely to you're gonna run into those other people once you hit 50. Not always of course, but ugh... they are quite annoying when you do. Even the folks that do take their time will likely fall prey to assimilation lol. It is very easy though to find people willing to help out at least, assuming one were to take that initiative.

Yeah, my brother and I actually despise 'speed runs' the way they are being done currently. "Pull everything and AoE it all down, zerg zerg" It takes the fun out of the game. On Goblin server, it actually takes me longer (being a DD) to shout/find a group that will run AK than it does to find one in the DF. Seems like all anyone wants to do anymore is WP, and I really don't like that dungeon too much. Not enough mechanics if you ask me.

I know I'm on a different server than you, but my brother (PLD) and I specifically go into the DF for our AK runs so we can help new players through them. It doesn't bother me to take an extra 10 minutes explaining to a player why things are being done and a good way to go about doing them. And we are in the same DF group (I DF with players from Balmung all the time) so maybe one day we can run a dungeon together!

Just wanted to let you know that there are people out there willing to help, even if they aren't on your world. Too many people in this game are all about "ME ME ME" when the whole point of an MMO is to communicate with others and work as a team.

Its never to late to start, if it were this game would be on death's door step already. If you ever decide to move servers over to Midgard give us a tell!

I agree with almost everything that's been said here. However, I would like to say that I personally enjoy the occasional speed run. Grinding, whether its fast or slow, is still grinding. With that in mind, pushing yourself to run it faster provides a different kind of challenge, one that I enjoy. That's just my preferences though.

I'm on Balmung too and a fellow "slow" leveler. Feel free to say hi-- maybe we can fumble through some dungeons. :)

I suggest you run DF to get some gear.
That's what I'm doing and it is pretty easy.

Never tried Coil, I'm sure I can't do it, but through DF I even got Guaruda Weapon.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm sorry if my post came off as over-reactive. I've only been able to get my "end game" impressions from /shout so far, which as you know can be a little scary. Judging from these posts there's still a ton of people appreciating the content and moving at their own pace. That makes me happy :) ♥

don't be fooled by this forum. the reason you see way more posts by lvl 50s than other levels is simply that until lvl 50 you can only have like 3-5 posts per day (!)

either way, there's at least one other person on Balmung that has no 50 yet, either *wink*wink*

The game is a week old in terms of a good mmo.

Ok it's like 3 months old, But you're thinking you missed the boat. The game will be around for 10 years, cross my figures.
I honestly started FFXI months after NA launch and it was great till 3 months ago.
I started WOW after leech king and it was good too.

This thread has made me happy :)

Last week I got 3 more DoH classes to 50, for a total of 6 (Leatherworker, Weaver, Carpenter, Goldsmith, Blacksmith and Culinarian) and was planning on finally getting Botany up to 50 as well tomorrow morning (languishing at 42).

But my highest DoW job is Dragoon at 45. I've been getting some good natured ribbing from my FC about joining them for end-game content, but I haven't been in any rush. I've been a little worried about finding people to join me once I do get there - but if this thread is any indication I think I'll be fine :)

I've had 50 on dow/dom and some crafting/gathering classes since 1.0 and I haven't done any endgame yet nor have I finished the story.. so I wouldn't say you're behind lol. i just transferred from balmung but its a fairly friendly server

I'm on Balmung as well and while I'm working on some of the end game gearing, I more enjoy taking my time and helping folks run dungeons and just learning their way through stuff. Feel free to look me up anytime you want/need something: S'neha Qimi.

I'll toss out another FC offer to some of the others as well. Ours is pirate themed. We're a smaller but friendly, laid-back group.

Indeed. Though I've discovered that simply having a level 50 Fisher (easiest class to level) unlocks all the privileges of being 50, on the forums (unlocked posting cap) and in game (XP boost on other classes all quests unlocked(even if you can't do them)) ;)

My highest DoW class/job is 33, though I have only been playing for just under 4 weeks.

Jesus, it's a theme park mmorpg with instances.

If people could get in FFXI 7 years after its PS2 release, I'm sure you'll be fine here.

As a few have said, there's plenty of us on Balmung who are taking are time so there's plenty of groups you can get together in that don't require intimate knowledge.

Besides FCs there are at least two Linkshells that accept random folks and their whole point is to help people progress. And if you ever see anyone with a MAD tag (admittedly there's only three of us!) we're always happy to help if you're nice. :)

If you're 47 then you have plenty of time to catch up before 2.1. People are still actively doing the 40+ story content and the reason duty finder exists is so that everybody has an equal chance to try content. The shouts you see for geared people are mostly for Speed Runs which you are not capable of until you get some good gear.

My advice to you would be to grind CM 10-15 times through duty finder, if you are not a healer or tank try and make some healer/tank friends to speed up que. Once you get to it, buy some darklight armor (i recommend armor before accessories for the vitality/hp boost) and then start grinding AK and WP regularly to cap out your tomes of mythology each week. Also, once you're able to, unlock the relic weapon quest and start progressing in that as you will need it for things such as bahamut's coil which is currently the hardest endgame content. It is very important to cap out your mythology as a lot of the best in slot armor/accessories come from it and you need 900 mythology to upgrade your relic weapon to +1 when you get it.

As a level 49 on balmung (also took last month off), I will co-sign that the rate some people blasted through the content at was downright discouraging. Friends of friends in my FC were completing their relic weapons 3 weeks after release, including that first week when half the people who bought the game couldn't even log on.
