Just a information thread for those that aren't aware you can Spiritbond a lot of different sets of gear as a Crafter. Preferably you are a maxed crafter and can make/meld all your own gear.
You are not just restricted to creating Crafting materia. For example all of the below sets are usable by "ALL CLASSES" meaning you can spiritbond them whilst crafting:
Patricians - WVR (Crafter gear)
Felt - WVR (Caster gear)
RaptorSkin - LWR (Crafter, Gatherer, Melee, Caster gear)
Imperial Operative - GSM (Caster, Melee gear)
Militia - GSM (Caster, Gatherer, Crafter)
Amber, Turquoise, Toumaline, Zircon, Spinel - Accessorys x 5
Example of what I do to create some caster materia to sell on the markets. I create 13 HQ pieces of gear: 5 pieces of Felt (Head, Chest, Legs, Gloves, Shoes), Raptorskin Satchel Belt and Zircon rings x2, choker, wrists and earrings. I will also create a MH/OH for my GSM in this instance. Now I buy 13 of the cheapest Materia I and meld one in each of the items to increase spiritbonding speed.
Next I will search the markets to find something that is cost effective to make so I can recover some of the costs from selling the end product on the markets. I'm not trying to make a profit and expect to come out at a loss.
I buy 1500 wind shards, 99 Raw Amber, 99 Raw Zircon and 99 Raw Spinels for the cost of say 75000gil(It takes around 280 crafts to Spiritbond my above set that is HQ with 1 meld). From my market research at the time of writing this I can sell my end products for roughly 50000-60000gil. (200gil each) - They sell well as nearly everyone who spiritbonds requires the GSM accessorys.
So I equip all my gear and then use Quick Synthesis x99 and repeat 3 times. This lets me afk or do other stuff for the 10-12min it takes each time. So watch a movie, browse the web or whatever else takes your fancy.
After I've finished I can now convert 13 pieces of gear which have roughly cost me about 30k in materials and a 20k loss from my crafting the items. So say 50k total.
From doing this I can make between 100k-300k+ every 45mins.
The idea is to search the markets and to find what you craft for a minimal loss to maximise your profits.

Would doing normal synths (as opposed to quick synth) require less materials/total synths? Or would the number still be so high as to be unreasonable without quick synth?

If everyone does this method your end product will not even be worth it. I just got finished with the math If I bought the required shards, fleece, electrum ore,snurble tufts (same price as fleece) and raw jewels you barely break even.The only way you can profit from this is if you gather everything yourself and even then you will do better by selling the shards and mats and buying the specific materia you need. Farming 1500 shards takes a bit not to mention all the other shards you have to gather to make the gear and etc. Its just not worth the time. On the other hand I see people farming wind shards will make the most gil on this.

I think it depends on the server as to whether this is viable or not. Personally, I do the spiritbonding thing, but I don't craft with the set on, I just go out and kill mobs (CM is a good place, you can get 40% a run).

In total you're looking at 100k to get 13 Rank III crafting materia. On my server cunning is usually around 10k, craftsmanship 15k, and command 20-30k. This can routinely yield 80-120k.
That being said it's more work than you think it is. Making 5-10 sets of gear is a nightmare. Just getting all the ingredients together and having inventory space is bad enough. Then you have to have lots of open armory slots to hold it. This is essentially impossible for rings because you only have 25 slots, when you SHOULD have 50. But I digress.
Inventory problems aside it takes a significant chunk of time to HQ 13 different slots. Since it's such a hassle to do you'll want to make at least 5 sets at once. That's over 60 synths with a minimum of 8+ steps for each. Even crafting macros require two macros to finish one synth.
Then you have the joy of melding those 60 items. If you want to double meld everything that means 30+ forbidden melds with all the accessories and weapons.
This is all assuming you have pretty much all crafts at 50 by the way. The lvl 45+ vendor gear is too expensive and it's NQ with no melds, meaning WAY more synths. The ilvl 55 crafting/gathering gear conversion rate for rank IV's seems to be around 5-10%, it's abysmal. The ilvl 55 gear also takes twice as long to bond as 45-50 so 400 synths at BEST. That means if you spend 200k bonding a full set and get no rank IV's you've just broke even and lost a huge amount of time + effort.
You can always sell the crap you quick synth but it takes a long time to sell 1,000 ingots, leathers, or 3,000 potions and you need retainer spots for the materia. These are always sold at a loss as well.
Now that shard prices on my server have gone haywire this method is less predictable and it's far from a secret at this point. Shards often shoot up to 70, 80 gil and upwards now so the profit margins are even more narrow. You can always kill stuff with all lvl 45+ crafting/gathering gear on to bond it if you want. It's a good excuse to level your terrible chocobo companion but it's unbelievably mind numbing. And if you have all crafts at 50 there are easier ways to make money than by spending hours grinding mobs.
For anyone still intent on doing this there are a few more useful things:
Item level is what matters, not the level that you can equip the gear.
Ilvl 1-29 always gives rank I
Ilvl 30-44 always gives rank II
Ilvl 45-50 always gives rank III
Ilvl 55 always gives at least rank III. Rank IV about 5-10% of the time.
The synth you are doing has to be within 15 or so levels of what you want to bond. A similar rule applies for farming mobs or gathering items.
Quick synthing spiritbonds at the same rate as normal synthing. Getting a high HQ chance doesn't seem to affect the spiritbond gain much, if at all.
The + spiritbond gain gear blows. If you're feeling lazy like I often am you can equip the meteor ring for +3 in one slot but don't bother with the others. I'm pretty sure it's a flat % increase.
The stats on the gear make no difference. All that matters is if it counts as crafting gear, gathering gear, or battle gear (not sure about DoW/DoM distinction). It always has an even chance to give you any of the related materia. So each crafting piece has a 1 in 3 chance to give cunning, 1 in 3 to give command, and 1 in 3 to give competence. The same idea applies for the other groups.
Aetheryte rings seem to have been (incorrectly?) labelled as battle gear. I've actually only gotten elemental materia from them so I stopped bonding them early on. I'm not sure what else they can convert into.
Oh, and it takes roughly 10 minutes to quick synth 99 of something :) -

Affordable materia is a good thing. Just remember that since you've figured out how to actually get them, then selling for less isn't a problem since lower prices attract more buyers.
And you can always use them yourself to save money. Prices are dropping steadily on my server but I still enjoy doing spiritbonding runs every couple days. -

Does anyone know if the success rate for quick synthesis cap? Or, is the success rate base on craftsmanship? level? Is it 100% cap? It tends to fail me quite often so I never trust doing quick syn unless I really can't withstand the boredom doing standard syn.
