Determination Theory-craft question.

Hi everyone,

I have been trying to sort out how determination works. My question is this:

Is determination an output stat (Does my Det affect the heals I cast) or is it an input stat (Does my Det affect the heals I recieve?)

If it is an output stat, why is it there? Why not just put more weight on MND or MD?

If it is an input stat, then are all the calculators out there that weigh Det into their math off if they use themselves as the target of the tested heals? Wouldn't it be better to heal a buddy who can set his Det to 0, so you can get an accurate reading from your own gear?

Funny just commented in another thread about this very thing.

First. Determination does not affect how much healing you receive. Otherwise a brand new character would heal for 1000's on a level 50.

2nd. I pulled this from another thread
1 Mind=0.49 hp cured. 6 Determination= just above that at 0.51 according the calculator.

The previous discussion was Spell Speed vs Det. I would personally stack SS over Det because i'd rather a spell to hit faster and make the difference between a dead character and a living character than the difference of .51extra hp cured for every 6 det.

I like to think of Determination as a very weak version of weapon damage.

That's false 1mnd is about 1.175 HP cured and 5 det = 1 mnd

Well at least I didn't take credit fo rit. Regardless my person opinion still holds true. I would regard Spell Speed over Det.

This has been very helpful. I suppose I will keep Det gear now if it otherwise beats SS gear. Previously I had been trading out Det gear with higher MND, for SS gear with lower MND (only like 1 or 2) because I felt the itemization was better.

Spell Speed is also shit you need MASSIVE Spell speed to start to mather

I would go MND then Vit then Crit then PIE

Reason is simple

MND well need explanation?
Vit is simple if you plan to do turn 5 you need to aim for about 4.1k HP even as healer
Crit Simply because Higher cure helps and for SCH it doubles the Shield
PIE Better AetherFlow for SCH and more MP for WHM again in turn 5 there is a lot of raises involved and we all know how much MP cost raises

I am not to the point of Turn 5 yet so I won't speak to the Vit stat, but wouldn't you rather stack Det instead of Crit. The way I see it Det is a constant increase to my heals, where as Crit is a chance to increase my heals. I would rather Increase my through put than have a chance to increase one heal! Pie seems like a good idea. Any thoughts on how much a "MASSIVE" amount of SS is to make a difference? Not simply a guess but an actual value. As it stands my stat priority is:

MND>MD>Det>PIE>SS>Crit

For a SCH I would focus on crit over det simply due to the fact that a crit adlo has a double strength shield, so you want as many of those as you can get.

For a WHM, it's probably preference. I would personally prefer det for a more reliable heal increase.

SS does not seem worth focusing on. Selene can buff spell speed by 30% and even that is only like a tenth of a second off a cast for about a (off the top of my head) 90 point increase. The biggest benefit for a healer is getting a heal off faster, but how often do you lose a tank by a tenth of a second late heal? You won't really see an "extra" heal either unless you are spamming them for about a minute straight.

Ok I get it. Crit is usefull for SCH due to their Adloquium Spell (I was wondering what Adlo ment). But for a WHM crit is not a very high pick on the stat tree. Follow-up question regarding SS. For Regen, does a high SS make it tick more often (a la WoW) or is it fixed and SS only effects the GCD and cast timers?

I believe it only affects the GCD and cast timers. HoT and DoT are on set timers for the ticks based on server times, if what everyone else is saying is true.

One huge issue with SS is that it takes >700 SS stat for it to have much of a noticable difference on cast times; and I don't know about you, but even crafted gear, most of the stats you are getting are between low and high 400's when you focus on them and add materia.
