I've been trying to play as a shieldless DPS gladiator, and as a DPS marauder, for the raw thrill of it and to experiment with the armory and stat allocation systems, which are supposed to allow classes to step out of their narrowly defined boundaries and experience other frontiers.
Unfortunately, it seems that with 2.0, everything possible has been done to force classes to stay in their predefined roles, completely nullifying the entire point of the armory system and being able to allocate stats.
I can understand greatly reducing the number of cross class skills in the game. A lot of them in 1.0 were pretty useless. And removing the sentinel class, I guess I can live with that. It was an absolute blast playing as a STR conjurer, pummeling foes down with shield weapon skills, but whatever.
If nothing else, though, I absolutely cannot understand why darksteel, vanya, gryphonskin, and darklight gear is so heavily restricted in what classes can wear it. Darklight, one could possibly make an argument for. It comes from a band of mercenaries who've customized their armor for a very specific role, ok, I guess that's why a Marauder can't wear the darklight platemail set, despite being able to wear every other set of platemail in the game, which Lancer can't even equip any of.
But is it a sincere action making Darksteel chainmail limited only to Lancer? Literally every other haubergeon in the game is equipable by Gladiator and Marauder. In some cases, it's even the best tanking gear for them. Clearly, however, this set of gear is just too heavy and bulky for the classes that are capable of wearing heavy platemail. Lets do everything we can to prevent Marauders and Gladiators from ever stepping out of their role as tank, and prevent them from wearing any high level DPS gear, despite being able to equip the lower level stuff, and potentially being able to do very well in it, especially once PVP comes out.
And lets go look at the Darklight harness/Gryphonskin set. From 1-50, every single other harness and leather armor can be equipped by the other melee DPS class, Lancer, but as soon as we get to 50, here comes the random class restriction on gear. Lancer, at the very least, has their own set of gear for that particular role, and would actually work as decent tanking gear, considering the amount of defence it has, but is that a good reason to prevent them from equipping it? You could give the class a bit more choice on what to get, and force players to choose between potentially 4 different sets of level 70 gear, giving variety and choice to the class.
Rather than just taking the mandatory level 70 gear, players could try to grab the level 70 pieces that have stats they want to get a lot of, but no you must not only be limited to 2 equipment sets, but you must also go out and grind several thousand more philosophy tomes or several million gil if you want to play the other melee class, as the gear is completely incompatible between the two.
Maybe, just maybe, if marauder and gladiator could equip Darksteel/light chainmail, we would see people not putting every point into vitality for those classes (Actually, this is a bad example as those are the only two classes in the game in which there's any debate on where to put your stats. They actually benefit from STR, DEX, and VIT, which is completely unlike every other class in the game). Twelve preserve people trying to do something creative with their characters, rather than having the exact same equipment, skills, and stat allocations as other player of that class.

This has been discussed many different ways, and it boils down to SE released a class/job system that was both poorly planned and half finished.
If they wanted to leave it as restrictive as it currently is then every single class should have had 2 jobs filling 2 different roles on release.
If they did not feel this was possible then ACN should have been Sch or Smn only not both.
Pretty much with the way class vs job abilities are currently implemented there is no way to even give mrd or gld a 2nd job without totally redesigning all their abilities from the start.
I see no room for expansion on current classes nor do I see any plans to allow further player customization.

Maybe this is yet another attempt at protecting the player. Like, running around as BLM in level 70 healing armor, recovering over 700 HP in Physicks and offending the healers...

It is because they consider pld and war tanks, they have the blue icon which means tank. They don't want them to dps which is why they can't use most dps gear.

that's the problem of merging ideas from 2 people that have different visions.
when they introduce at least 2 jobs per class with differing primary stats and roles, then the point allotment would make a little more sense.
Yoshi-P did make a statement about traits that totally alter an existing ability to make it viable for a second job. He used DRK coming off of GLA as an example, not saying that this is confirmed. -

Sorry, but I have zero faith in yoshi. He is nothing more than a figure head, a do nothing.
He has constantly flip flopped because he does not have a good concept of MMOs in general.
He says something openly, then likely after asking various talents on his team, says something totally contrary to his previous comment.

The game was remade to fit the Duty Finder mold.
I would LOVE more versatile classes/jobs but that era is gone. Duty Finder rules all SE's decisions. -

You wouldn't find tanks using Darksteel Chainmail/Chain Coif, and I wouldn't want to party with one that had them.
The defense on those pieces is even lower than PLD/WAR AF and Defense/Magic Defense make a noticeable difference in this game.
Just wait for vanity slots and you can wear a haubergeon to your heart's content. -

as example Gryphonskin set for LNC, PGL and ARC, but not for DRG, MNK and BRD

This is my problem with this game. No customization. The Cross-Class Skills are a joke. Cooldowns, is all they are. There is no reason to play a class, you have to play a Job. There is only 9 Jobs in this entire game.
19 Jobs in FFXI, with the ability to set a Subjob allowing all kinds of combinations.
11 classes in WoW with 3 different specializations in each.
47 classes in DAOC with 3 different specializations each.
11 Powersets in DCUO with 2 different specializations
16 classes in SWTOR, with 3 different specializations in each.
9 Jobs... with zero specialization or customization. One set of armor, one weapon, one build. Really? I feel like I was lied to about this Cross-Class Skill trash. Remember Black Mages, cross over that Hawk's Eye. -
