Low FPS on NEW PC

Hello guys, I am new to FFXIV and am so far slightly disapointed at the performance my brand new pc has been showing. I am wondering if there is something I am doing wrong as to why I am not getting the Performance that I think I should be. Anyways here are the details:

I am running the game on Laptop (High) in Windowed mode.

FPS (not in city or anything): Ranges from 25-29. My brother who has an older PC and a worse Card has the same settings and is getting 50+fps.

Here are my computer specs:
AMD FX-Series FX-6100(3.3GHz)
16GB DDR3 1TB HDD Capacity
Windows 8 64-Bit
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 2GB

Any thoughts? I Feel like my performance should be a lot better... Thanks guys! <3

what is your internet connection... DSL or Cable? I have DSL and I am getting around 22 to 25 fps.. I am not sure if that is a the normal fps or not.. but I thought I would share the info.

You have a budget processor, AND a budget video card. What did you expect these to do for your games? Just because a PC is brand new does not mean it has good parts inside.

The AMD FX is not a good CPU for gaming, and will not help out your low end vid card on performance issues. Sometimes a good CPU can make up for a lesser vid card, and some times a super vid card can make up for a slow CPU. But when both parts are lacking... You cant really expect too much. Then put them all in a laptop and really watch performance drop due to heat issues.

FPS has nothing to do with internet connection. If your FPS is low that is a user end performance issue.

I knew the vid card wasn't amazing, any suggestions on a good card I can upgrade to?

I highly recommend getting a desktop for gaming. Even gaming laptops suck at gaming.

As for the card. You have a GT. Anything with GTX will be a significant improvement. A good mid range card will cost you around $150 - $250 tho.

The PC I bought was a desktop. But I will look into improving the Vcard soon. Its kind of disappointing though that Newegg.com advertises this computer as a Gaming PC.. It got really good reviews and everything.

I'm going to say that is really isn't that great of a processor, however my computer does the exact same thing on a i5 dual core 64bit OS with 2 gigs of ram on a nvidia GT 540M with 8 gigs of ram. Your pc is slow but not that slow. The issue is with the servers. The servers have a lot of lag time, the average server though out final fantasy xiv have a average ping of 120 + meaning highly populated areas in game are prone to give you less FPS. I will also agree with the others on having a 'new' computer. Having a new computer doesn't mean much if whats in the computer isn't up to standards with the minimal running preferences. My computer runs this game on max settings on the bench mark test and finishes with 6k and above. The issue isnt with your pc the servers are just not stable.

Once again.. FPS, server lag, and latency are all completely different things.

FPS is releated to your personal computers specs. Has nothing to do with server lag, or latency.
Server lag has to do with the actual servers ability to perform. Nothing any user can do anything about.
Latency/Ping is everything in between you and the servers. This includes local routing, and the routing used by your ISP to get you to the server.

Server lag can very much so affect FPS.

I built a PC for under $500.00 that runs this game at 45fps-50fps @ 720p and scores a 4100 or higher if I remember correctly on the Benchmark when running AMD Dual Graphics with the CPU's built-in GPU hooked up to an LG 37" LCD TV.


AMD-A8 @ 4.6GHz w/ Dual Cards 7750
ATI Radeon 6570 w/ 2GB Core Edition
F2A55-M Motherboard
8GB (2x4gb) PNY Memory

Anyways, with the DVD Drive, it came out to 476$. Now I could run the game at 1080p but then I notice a a slightly graphical stutter and I dislike that and I'm not a videophile so I don't need 1080p to enjoy a game as I used to be a PS3 player and running it on the PC now is 100x better.

If sync should become for what ever reason 'laggy' then one half of your machine is running up to speed, the other half is the server. When server lag is happening its not getting the information as quickly as it needs it. The end that is getting the information then slows itself down to keep the synced connection in contact. So again in order to do that your system slows down too. The information slows down on the server end or the machines end FPS is effected. Now when your ISP gets involved this is when you get the latency. The FPS on your computer will be Perfect however, the information that your computer sends is not getting to the server. This is when your connection to the internet is no longer sending information to the server. The game running environment is great! But everybody and everything around you happens to be.. welllll.... standing still. This is the conclusion of latency, FPS and Server lag issues.

@ntall1 sorry to say this and not to start a flame war or anything but you really have no idea what your talking about. 1. Fps is effected by multiple things in a game from Video card, Ram, Process, Internet Connection, etc. 2. Laptops are just as powerful (if not more in some cases) as a Desktop that's why they have Alien Ware "GAMING" laptops designed just for gaming which cost's about an arm and leg (lowest I've seen them go for is $800 for a top notch one that plays games like this and Starcraft II on high, on craigslist) Even the ps3 lags and has FPS issues duh to whats going on in the game or the internet.

@OP as for you I would say dropping your settings to Laptop (standard) or well in your case Desktop (standard) I play on a laptop with it on Laptop (Standard) which has AMD A6 Processor (good as an I5) with a Radeon HD Graphics 512mb chip, 1.4ghz processor, 10gbs of ram Win-7 64-bit. An even i got 20 - 30 FPS but game seems to run smoothly for me. But i would suggest upgrading your video card to something more powerful.

Are you kidding me????? The server is not sending you any video data as you play. My goodness. Clearly I do not understand what I am talking about. Packet loss and FPS have nothing to do with each other but do have similar symptoms.

And yes.. they do make gaming laptops.. But they are still not great. Laptops... no matter who makes them still suffer heat issues that WILL lower the life of the computer. This is why laptops will never be good for gaming.. No matter how much you spend on it.

Server lag and latency can affect the response time for actions, but it doesn't automatically translate into affecting your FPS.

FPS is determined by the raw processing power and data transfer speeds in getting the data rendered on your screen. Remember, you monitor has a refresh rate, in most cases 60hz or better. It has to keep up with 1920 x 1080 pixels tagged for 32bit color data per pixel, plus Z buffer, transparency data and such... and your card also needs a buffer flip for the changes in the pending frame as well (there's more, but you get the idea). So, you card has to continuously send all that data to your screen so it is displaying something at all times, or it goes black. Even when NOTHING is going on, and no network data is being sent/received... you still have an FPS rating because yor card is refreshing your screen. Pull it up under configuration while on the Title Screen for a perfect example. The one that has Start, Opening movie, Configuration, Exit. The one that loops the FF anthem and if you let it sit long enough without starting the game it goes into "attract" mode and starts playing movies after a while. You may see it running 150+ FPS there if your VSYNCH is unlocked. It's not relying on the server for much of anything at that point, and there is little if anything to process either--so it's running full speed ahead. The same thing happens when you first zone and your screen is basically black with the loading notice.

Now, when your system doesn't have truly dedicated networking hardware and such (don't find many with NPU's anymore), then heavy network traffic can have an impact in a round-a-bout way because it is stealing processor time and such. This applies when you have 350 users huddling around the crystal in a Mongolian Clusterf*ck situation and your system is having to process all that extra character and custom texture data being pumped in through your network card. But the bogging down in that situation is because it is consuming local resources to process game data (CPU cycles, Memory bandwidth) that the system might otherwise use just for rendering. It is NOT because you are waiting on a response from the server to tell it when to render something on the screen... it's your system is bottlenecking somewhere because of the data overload in general.

Oh lord Jesus please do not tell me he said laptops heating up lower the life of the computer... This kid knows nothing about PC's. Hes the kind of people i get everyday who places his fans all around his gaming rig all leading into the case instead of out. @Serenold don't listen to that kid man, laptops are FINE computers for gaming if they are build correctly. Heat does not shorten the life of the computer, laptops are fine. If you are irresponsible with your computer and don't know how to properly use a gaming laptop then you probably shouldn't use gaming laptops.

Take it from a former PS3 player, now PC player, this is why I stay away from Ul'Dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa. I park my character in an outpost and only visit major cities to turn in greens for seals and selling materials.

My experience is that it didn't matter how high or low my fps, was, my attacks were correlated properly with the GCD in my abilities (2.42 seconds), and i only used the term lag for experiences when my character ran in place for 5 seconds then teleported 5 yalms in front of me. THAT is lag, not a low frame rate, though don't get me wrong, Frame rate is AFFECTED BY latency but is not DICTATED BY latency. A low latency can knock a normally offline 60fps down to 40 or 30fps instantly but again the Frame Rate is a local value, and not to be confused with the idea that BAD INTERNET = BAD FPS. This is a fallacy.

Actually, heat is a BIG killer of not only laptops.... but consoles as well. Or have you not heard the horror stories of solder beads separating the chips from the motherboards? PC's even succumb to heat problems over time...capacitors drying out and voltage regulation going off the deep end, power supplies having their transformers go kaput from overheating because of extended overload abuse--even laptop PSU's suffer this same fate after a while. Let's not forget early Athlon meltdowns from bad heatsink/thermal protection implementations back in the 90's.

Laptops are MUCH more sensitive to heat then PC's simply because of limited heat dissipation and reduced air flow. It poses a real challenge to produce a quality gaming laptop that can actually perform--that's one of the big reasons they have such a high premium price compared to similar specs in a PC.

Baffling.

When you're gaming on a laptop, you might need to look for a gaming-grade ones from ASUS, MSI, and even Razer (their Blade Pro) but yeah those would tend to be kinda expensive.

As for the AMD FX processor not for gaming, that's not true at all. I have friends who use AMD FX processors and can still game like a champ. It just needs to pair with a GPU card that can deliver great performance. Just not that AMD APU ones, though coz they suck at graphics-intensive games like FFXIV.

Since the GPU card used is a GeForce GT640, yeah it can handle games at decent performance, but it can lose some of the graphics quality instead. And it'll be much worse if you're using a monitor more than 1336x768 screen resolution. I suggest you step it up to either GTX650Ti or Radeon HD7770/7790 if you're on a tight budget. Oh, Radeon HD7750 is also a good choice, but you might need to lower some of the graphics settings though.

This only happens in games where it's intended to happen.
(Usually first person shooters, or other skill based/competitive games.)

When the host or other members are not keeping a steady connection, the game slows down (low FpS) in order to keep everyone equal, and avoid unfairness, due to connection issues by someone(s) in the group.

It's programmed to happen.

In FFXIV, its NOT programmed to happen.

If information isnt being sent fast enough, from another player(s), the game just doesnt load them, or show them doing anything.

Your FpS remain the same.

While severe packet loss will cause your game to stop and seemingly FPS to drop, the OP is experiencing consistently low FPS, so unless he is timing out of the game altogether ALL the time, this is not the issue, if you have consistently low fps, nothing SE can do will fix it, stop confusing FPS and lag and expecting that when SE sort this stuff your FPS will miraculously jump about 20 frames.
